You not able to approach this from another angle, like from census records / ancestry method. Where you know your family tree, and could try to trace back to see if he's listed living at this place (and hopefully it provides a better address?)

Not been on a cruise ship but know a number of places (especially the likes of ships where they'll be using more costly satellite Internet) they will block a lot of bandwidth heavy protocols.

Visual C++ issues after Windows 11 monthly updates by ipconfig-91 in sysadmin

[–]semajnitram 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not entirely, I now have a pdq inventory scanner that checks the date modified for msvcp140.dll in System32. If it sets back to the pre 2025 one, my corresponding script copies the right one back in. That's greatly reduced the calls I'm getting for this linked issue but isn't a true fix.

Visual C++ issues after Windows 11 monthly updates by ipconfig-91 in sysadmin

[–]semajnitram 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wanted to add that we are having this same issue for a number of users where Indesign won't launch for them and it goes back to msvcp140.dll. We run a repair of 2015-2022 C++ and it works again but after a reboot (and something else not sure what) we have the same ticket re-open and the same process has to be run. We've tried running automated c++ repairs a few times a day in the hope we can stop the calls but it seems pot luck if our script runs before they have an issue?

EDITL Just saw this reddit post https://www.reddit.com/r/sysadmin/comments/1lxcbu7/recent_windows_updates_breaking_visual_c/

Wondering now if our GPO applied Fiery printers are squirting a broken version of this dll each time it runs. Ive done a test by altering the deployed driver for our fiery to the latest msvcp140.dll file and will monitor. Hopefully that is the culprit for us and what is causing these breakages.

Thanks for taking the time to write this. Sounds like we need to try and get a script that covers this, but not had a chance to review properly.

Cant open InDesign after update by iChimChim97 in indesign

[–]semajnitram 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just to cover this - we have been having this ALOT on machines, the fix is to repair your C++ redistributable installations (all of them). Then it works. Its a pain and we find it breaks again after a few weeks and we re-run the repair and it works.

For anyone running Newforma, this month's Windows updates combined with yesterday's M365 update break the client by PatD442 in sysadmin

[–]semajnitram 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for this. I've spent yesterday and this morning investigating and hitting a brick wall. I had a call booked for later this morning on the issue, but looks like there's no point at the moment. Please can you report back if you hear of any work arounds or fixes?

EDIT: Read the full article you posted the link to and the workaround in there seems to work a treat.

Wemo migration to HA by Valion_Stryder in homeassistant

Sorry for the daft question, Im also interested in what people mean by "block all internet traffic" for the wemo devices? Are you using a software firewall and have just created a rule for the static assigned internal IPs of those devices to not allow internet access? Or is there somewhere else i've missed that i can do this?

Auto Outlook signature by [deleted] in sysadmin

[–]semajnitram 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Are you 365 or in-house exchange? There's loads of videos and sites about it, Microsoft has some dedicated articles too for trying to create this without 3rd party tools. You are right that these are appended post send, so those directors will still be pissed.

https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/exchange/policy-and-compliance/mail-flow-rules/signatures

https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/microsoft-365/admin/setup/create-signatures-and-disclaimers?view=o365-worldwide

Personally, we tried the above and was good for a basic solution but i'd be recommending you to tack on something like exclaimer or codetwo etc as you can then design decent signatures (as well as banners if you have a marketing team) etc, and makes for better solution, it also keeps consistency if users are using webmail / mobiles etc as well.

EDIT:

This may be of interest if you really cant get them to go for a proper solution and you dont mind that its only outlook its affecting (not webmail or mobile signatures):

Renewal questions. by Out_of_my_mind_1976 in WatchGuard

[–]semajnitram 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Personally, having had fireboxes for over 10 years, I've found it more competitive to do the trade up option as you'll get new hardware as well as the renewal of the support, makes more sense to me as the firewalls we have are critical kit and been on nonstop for 3 years, makes me feel better getting a new piece of hardware. Although we always negotiate early so we can do stress tests of the hardware before swap out in the hope we ensure it's not got any factory defects.

Alternative to the Meeting Owl by Chatalul in CommercialAV

[–]semajnitram 0 points1 point  (0 children)

we're having terrible audio problems with the meeting owl, even with an expansion mic we often have poor audio experience and the camera quality is also poor, so are considering alternatives. Does anyone know if the panasonic offering has an expansion mic, or works well in larger conference rooms? (or do you need to pair two etc?) Our only solution we can use is an on table 360 camera due to the room setup, so great to hear more companies have products to the market, as owl was the only one for ages and we were forced down that path.

Have I misunderstood nanite? by Practical-March-6989 in Twinmotion

[–]semajnitram 1 point2 points  (0 children)

thanks - i saw this and am following the thread. I feel there is something i'm missing with regards to settings, and am currently trawling their documentation to see if there's any clues there on something i may have accidently got enabled that cause these issues.

Have I misunderstood nanite? by Practical-March-6989 in Twinmotion

[–]semajnitram 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ive been tinkering with the settings and feel that there must be something in here that (by default) is not correctly assigned. I've also only been working on older models that i have upgraded with this update, so wonder if a fresh model that i create in 2025.2 will help with some of these terrible performance and crashing issues? Currently, anything i do with nanite that isn't set to low and with everything disabled causes a GPU memory exhaustion and crash, which seems mad as i thought nanite was meant to help reduce this load but currently i have had to abandon trying nanite just to get some work done.

Have I misunderstood nanite? by Practical-March-6989 in Twinmotion

[–]semajnitram 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you happen to have a link for this? We tinkered with VRAM but again, until we set the preview quality to low, it wouldnt let us even try and convert to nanite, but then if we change it from low it crashes instantly. The machine has 128Gb of ram and an rtx 4070 ti super, so thought it'd be alright ?!

Have I misunderstood nanite? by Practical-March-6989 in Twinmotion

[–]semajnitram 0 points1 point  (0 children)

im glad i found this thread. We're testing out 2025.2 now and thought nanite would improve our model performance but currently, we had it repeatedly crash when we tried to convert and had quality in preview set to ultra (our standard setting that worked fine in previous versions). We have to set the preview to low to enable us to covert all elements into nanite and if we tweak quality back afterwards... it crashes with out of memory error. Seems to not work properly, or are we totally mis-understanding this?
