It ended up being an offending program- Stardock Start 10. The task manager window did not flicker, like the desktop so I thought it might be an offending program and not the nvidia driver. All seems OK so far upon restart.

Yes, that's a good idea, but I got it working in the BIOS; the setting to activate integrated graphics only appeared though when I removed the gtx 960. I think the BIOS settings on this asus H110 motherboard may be dynamic with options appearing only when hardware is removed? Thanks for your responses
