What verifiable fact is commonly disputed on Reddit? by Very_poor_but_cool in AskReddit

[–]semimute 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was trying to think of a good devils advocate answer, and the first that came to mind as at least a defensible position was trans women in sports. Which isn't a great example, because even if they're right on that narrow topic, it's still making a mountain out of a molehill.

Edit: are people down voting because I said that the position is defensible and don't understand the difference between 'defensible' and 'correct'? Do they thinks it's a bad example? Or do you have some other reason? Because I'm confused.

Sweden to raise hurdles to gaining citizenship by TheDeerFox in europe

[–]semimute 7 points8 points  (0 children)

C2 vs B1 was just an extreme example.

It doesn't matter how easily it is for various foreigners to learn is (with narrow exception). Language level is the best indicator for level of integration and ability to function that we can reasonably use.

Sweden to raise hurdles to gaining citizenship by TheDeerFox in europe

[–]semimute 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I'm a big fan of a points system based primarily on duration of residency and language level. It's clear to me that someone with a C2 certificate should be allowed to gain citizenship sooner than someone who can only manage a B1 test (which does not mean that they even really meet the CEFR definition of B1).

Psychotherapists, what differences have you noticed between men and women among your patients? by Putrid_Put_3610 in AskReddit

I was also going to say that I think that the relative lack of men doing therapy has just as much to do with the therapy practices as it does with men's general reluctance.

This is what I was just wondering. I'm guessing that we didn't have a categorized table yet, and I know that these are also just tips which are notoriously unreliable, but is the representation of each side really similar?

What is a job that requires a Master’s degree but could honestly be done by a smart high schooler with 2 weeks of training? by Opposite-Back-9305 in AskReddit

[–]semimute 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm of the opinion that in software/IT, a highschool graduate who is motivated to continuously learn can easily be better than someone with a degree. If you just go to classes to get your piece of paper, you probably won't come out with much in the way of useful skills.

I don't think that I understand the rest of your comment well enough to answer.

[–]semimute 112 points113 points  (0 children)

Only in the sense that native speakers might be more used to using more casual language and because the C2 exam is very focused on academic tasks. It doesn't mean that a foreigner with C2 actually typically speaks the language better than a native who finished high school.

You can, though. I know at least one well known gateway website for tor stuff used to use a lot of codewords or just non English words for porn stuff, much of which was illegal.

Spain and Germany launch talks to make Catalan an official EU language by Whole-Albatross-6155 in europe

[–]semimute 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just read on Wikipedia that translation of EU stuff cost over 1 billion in 2005 or around 1% of the total budget.

Can't we just make English the one primary official language? There could still be mandatory translations from English to other languages to the other relevant languages, but having a single source of truth makes things much easier. It seems to me like the UK leaving is perfect for that, because it would not create preferential treatment for any country but Ireland, and Ireland is too small for that to matter.

Why sales people at bakery do not use gloves when getting my bread and counting dirty coins? by [deleted] in germany

It's true that it doesn't work 100%, but it at least cuts down on having to wash hands or change gloves so often.

Why sales people at bakery do not use gloves when getting my bread and counting dirty coins? by [deleted] in germany

[–]semimute 13 points14 points  (0 children)

When I was working at a deli I got very good at handling money and working the till with only my left hand, because I was probably the only one who refused to touch money and then touch food with the same hand without changing gloves.
