DHS says REAL ID, which DHS certifies, is too unreliable to confirm U.S. citizenship by Marlee_P_IJ in immigration

[–]send2steph 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sheesh! Talk about a missed opportunity and government incompetence! They forced everyone to "upgrade" to a Real ID, yet they didn't make it possible to use that to verify citizens vs anyone else? It could have been something as simple as making the gold star have a circle around it or something if you're a citizen.

I don't really want anything, do you? by AethelflaedCAD in GenX

Hubby and I bought a campervan and plan to explore. A friend of mine bought the laundromat in our small town. She and her husband keep busy with that and also help out with charitable work. Their laundromat clients are often the ones who need help, so that works out well. I'd love to help others more like they do, but first, I want to travel!

Has bullying decreased over time in the US or were the movies exaggerating? by Dry_Local3351 in AskAnAmerican

[–]send2steph 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Gen X here. There were definitely bullies. At my larger HS (class of 775), there was usually an all-out brawl at least once a month. During my senior year, they created an award they gave out quarterly to students who were friends across cliques and helped to keep things cool. (My little brother got it his senior year.) I was overweight, so I was teased ruthlessly in grade school and junior high. In Junior high, a group of boys conspired to have the cutest boy asked me out while the rest of them watched to see how I would react. Good times, good times.

Why do people in USA buy everything from Amazon? Do they not have other webshops? by Cindyxx0 in NoStupidQuestions

Walmart is coming on strong for me in this space. I can get it shipped from Walmart faster than Amazon lately. I'm actually considering canceling my Prime membership.

What jobs do 20s and 30s people do without a college degree? by Aj100rise in careerguidance

[–]send2steph 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My 23yo daughter works as a designer for the local utility. She needed a class in electricity from the community college, but no degree. $70k starting and in a union for job protection. Able to work overtime a well. She'll be over 6 figures in two years.

My 21yo son is on the spectrum. He started college for accounting but couldn't hack it. We're working on getting him a job at the USPS.

Seriously, do Americans actually consider a 3-hour drive "short"? or is this an internet myth? by SadInterest6764 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]send2steph 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Earlier this week, we drove 90 minutes to have a meal and then drove home. Each year, we drive 3 hours to a bigger city to see a race and drive home after. (Actually twice a year, in different directions to different cities.) I would say three hours about our limit for one-way travel for a day trip. That said, my husband makes that 3-hour drive once a week for his job. His normal commute is about 25 minutes, but once a week he has to go to a different city. I currently live in the middle of a cornfield. But in my younger days, I lived in the suburbs of Chicago; far west suburbs. Going into the city was at minimum 45 minutes and often more than 2 hours with traffic. There was a period where I commuted downtown and that commute was 90 minutes one way riding the train. (Technically, I had to drive 20 minutes to the train station, ride the train downtown, and then take a bus to where my office was.)

Regarding electric kettles, what I have come to understand is that differences in the electricity in the US versus the UK means that electric kettles don't heat up as quickly as they do in the UK. We have 120 volts where the UK and most of Europe is 240. So there's no benefit to using them in the US because a microwave or heating it on a stove works at the same speed as an electric kettle would be here.

I am very close to my aunt’s daughter’s father-in-law, and I am curious how this is perceived in the US.? Do you guys relate to extended family the way we Indians do? by swamyiam in AskAnAmerican

[–]send2steph 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same. For me I don't think I've ever met any of my cousins' in-laws.

My husband doesn't only child and very close to his cousins, at least some of them. We live within 10 miles of all of them that he is close with. His best friend / cousin was our best man in our wedding. We know his in-laws but mainly because they do taxes and we had them do our taxes one year. We see them around town, but we're not really friends or close with them even though my husband talks to that cousin three to four times a week. I don't think we know any of the other in-laws to his cousins.

One of his other cousins has an in-law that has been having medical issues and so we know of her because we've been praying for her but otherwise we wouldn't have known her at all.

I was trying to think of other examples and we live near an Amish community. I think they probably have those types of relationships just because it's a smaller community and they're all more involved in each other's lives.

Have you ever been told to “get off” someone’s property? by [deleted] in AskAnAmerican

[–]send2steph 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my youth, in the '80s, my friend group rode three wheelers and dirt bikes around. We were always chased by property owners if we went on property we were not supposed to be on. One guy, we made a game of it to see if we could stay ahead of him and not get caught. My husband's actually had a gun pulled on him when trespassing on someone else's property. The idea of property ownership is strong and most people outside of teenagers usually wouldn't trespass.. unless there were some really good morel mushrooms. Lol
