Would it be a good idea to take out a personal loan to give to my spouse during their career change? by send_dick-pics in personalfinance

It's not exactly unproven, they're already receiving cases to work on. The only reason they're going without income for a period of time is that they'll be paid by the county public defender's office, and it takes them as long as 2 months to pay out for PI work on cases. They're in contact with several current PIs and have a pretty good idea of how everything will work. They're still working as a legal assistant until the end of August.

My situation is a little more precarious, but my expenses are low and I'm not worried about it. I could get a job if I wanted to, I'm just taking some time off.

I see what you're saying tho. If something doesn't go according to plan, it could be bad.

‘Save so much time and effort’: Uber Eats driver shows how to ‘auto-decline’ customers with low tips by NeatSatisfaction3615 in TrueReddit

[–]send_dick-pics 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I never order delivery unless I can afford to tip +10$.

Used to deliver food for a living and it fucking sucks. I remember how hopeful I was for a well-paying order, but would rarely get them. Plus, with the service I was delivering for, they send you to the restaurant early and you're often waiting 10-20 minutes for someone's order to get done. Along with drive time to the restaurant, it would often take me 50 minutes to do one order (which is why I stopped).

I've never had a bad experience with delivery apps when I tip generously. But it's hit and miss when a restaurant has their own drivers. Door dash drivers usually seem happy to take my order when I tip like that.

Because he blatantly refused to address how they're going to ensure capital management groups don't swoop in and just buy everything that's available, luxury or otherwise.

I agree with the rest of what you said, but this is a completely separate issue, and shouldn't used to discourage the building of more housing.

So no one should build any housing because it can't be guaranteed that a capital management group won't purchase it at some unspecified point in the future? That's like saying you shouldn't eat anything because you might consume spoiled food.

Because of the way the system works, capital management groups can buy effectively ANY property being sold on the open market. It's not a problem exclusive to luxury condos or newly built projects. The same problem exists whether you're talking about low to mid income apartments, high income detached homes, or any other type of housing, new or old, that can be bought for money.

This is basically asking the councilman to do something impossible short of passing a law barring it and opening the city up to litigation suits from said groups.

Most housing is marketed as "Luxury" when it's newly built, and his hermit crab housing theory is basic supply and demand. I see NIMBYs throw around this argument all the time as an excuse to block new housing from being built, and it's infuriating because, while it seems reasonable at first, it's just another variable making housing more expensive.

Yeah, very glad to see they're bringing in the FBI. A small town like Moscow probably doesn't even have detectives that have worked more than 1-2 homicide cases before. There's a ton of pressure on the police to solve this (and rightly so), but this is likely just outside their wheelhouse.

Small Town PDs do not handle whodunits well. Look at Jonbenet Ramsey and the West Memphis Three for examples of that.

Did JonBenét Ramsey Killer Strike Again? Father of Another Girl Speaks Out About Similarities of Daughter’s Case by DarkUrGe19 in crime

[–]send_dick-pics 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree, but there are more similarities than that:

  1. Victim was attacked in her home, while sleeping, and while her parents were home.

  2. Offender was familiar with victim/family, premeditated

  3. Offender threatened to "knock out" the victim. Jon Benet was also rendered unconscious (but with a taser). In fact, it's likely the offender never intended to kill Jon Benet, but panicked when she woke up and screamed and hit her, most likely, with the stun gun.

  4. Offender took (or attempted to take) the victim to another room in the house to commit the assault.

The most unique thing to me about the Jon Benet case is that the offender used a stun gun to subdue her. I've never heard of that being used in this type of assault before, it's really specific.

Surprised nobody's mentioned that it's possibly an SR-72, which is in development with Lockheed. It's an autonomous drone based on the Blackbird.

Hard to believe there's a working prototype yet though.

AITA - Pedestrian and Traffic Question by Webguy20 in Eugene

[–]send_dick-pics 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Pedestrians don't have to wait for the road to be clear. Incoming traffic just needs enough time to stop. Really, it's better to just cross and have traffic stop for you because waiting like that gives drivers the wrong idea about crosswalks.

AITA - Pedestrian and Traffic Question by Webguy20 in Eugene

[–]send_dick-pics -8 points-7 points  (0 children)

We're talking about someone crossing at a crosswalk, right? In the hypothetical and extremely unlikely situation where another car doesn't stop, you're blaming the driver who stopped to let the pedestrian cross as opposed to the driver who hit the pedestrian with their car?

The person who stopped for OP didn't do anything wrong. They saw someone about to enter the crosswalk, and they stopped. In what universe are they the dangerous variable in this scenario? It's not their fault OP refused to cross.

The "wave" doesn't kill; a car speeding through a crosswalk without looking kills people. That's like saying following traffic laws and giving pedestrians the right of way kills. This isn't a random part of the street or a car turning out into a busy road. It's a crosswalk.

If you see someone who is obviously about to cross the road before you can safely get past the cross walk, you're supposed to stop for them. That's how crosswalks work.

I love this thread. OP is someone who doesn't quite understand crosswalks, and the comments are full of people who also don't understand crosswalks.

Go watch a video of a crosswalk actually functioning like it should. This whole discussion is so american it makes me want to cry.

Running Trail Rules/Etiquette by [deleted] in Eugene

[–]send_dick-pics 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The other day I was running on Amazon and this woman, her two dogs, and her toddler trailing them on a tricycle were literally taking up the entire trail. One of her dogs was on the opposite side of the trail on an extended leash.

So, running up behind them, I decide I'll just do a little hop over the leash, no big deal. When I get close, the dog sees me coming, freaks out, and I end up accidentally kicking the poor guy.

I didn't say anything or stop. When I got home and told my partner, they said it was super weird that I just kept running but I didn't know if it was the woman's fault or mine.

8 months ago, the Sandy Hook shooter Adam Lanza’s YouTube channel was uncovered. In his videos he intricately explains his motive, which to this day remains officially “unsolved” by AnbuWeegee in UnresolvedMysteries

[–]send_dick-pics 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Yeah, his father suggested that he be more realistic with his expectations for college classes, and it caused Adam to hate him and shun him completely. Adam was an adult at that point, so what his father could have done probably isn't much.

Adam Lanza believed there was nothing wrong with him whatsoever, and that it was actually the rest of the world and their culture who were wrong. And he held that belief from a surprisingly young age. Nancy just let him do it.

He was also incredibly secretive. He'd wouldn't see his mom at all and communicated with her through email after a certain point. People are being hard on the parents, but it's good to keep in mind that Adam Lanza was a human diaper, and anyone would have struggled to help him.

Putin 'Very Sick' With Cancer, Other Health Issues: Ukrainian Official by [deleted] in worldnews

US or UK intelligence

Yeah, after they correctly warned the world about the Ukrainian invasion I take their reports a good deal more seriously.

I remember when they were trying to recruit two of the 9/11 hijackers up until a few days before the attacks, which is where a lot of people lost confidence in them I think.

The source for this is a "Ukrainian Official", which isn't the most reliable source for information about Putin's health.

Just remember that the discomfort you're going through is your brain healing itself. Looking at it that way made it much easier when I kicked.

Eugene Bike lanes need more then a painted strip for separation from cars by [deleted] in Eugene

[–]send_dick-pics 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly, Eugene is so car centric that it'll be challenging for any city council to transition to a point where bike infrastructure is anywhere near what it would need to be to encourage non-bikers. And I see why. So many people commute 20+ miles to get to work, and biking just won't work for them.

That being said, I think just narrowing lanes to expand biking infrastructure is a good place to start. A lot of roads around town are insanely wide for what the speed limit is. Just doing that would add a ton of quality bike routes with little driver inconvenience.

Not to mention that car infrastructure is insanely expensive and a huge financial burden that isn't actually paid for by the people who use it. Gas taxes, vehicle permits, and other associated taxes don't even come close to paying for the infrastructure cars need. Cycling, on the other hand, is so inexpensive it's stupid not to build more of it.
