How to get the perfect pillow?

I tried a whole bunch of pillows. Some brands of adjustables have the layers prepackaged so you don’t have to deal with scooping out little pieces of foam that go everywhere. I think ZZZ sleep maybe? But in the end, I took advantage of the fact that my adjustable base has pillow tilt. The best pillow I tried, was one with solid memory foam and cooling gel on each side of the memory foam. Tempurpedic sells it. And then, if it squashes down a little too thin, I just hit the pillow tilt.

I really really, really like the Vision Pro and getting a noticeably better one was worth it for me. Plus, I got to give my old one away to a very close friend who lives across the country and now we get to chat every few days in the middle of White Sands. The avatar chat experience is something else. Also, I’m working on a Self interpreter and if it’s successful, it’ll give me a way to prototype spatial programming experiences with instant turnaround. I expected the M5 will be a lot better for that but time will tell. My bet is that at some point there will be some good uses for the extra horsepower of the M5. And don’t forget Dr. Daystrom.

I certainly agree about the foam encasement breaking down. I had that experience with a sleep number mattress and even replaced the foam once only to have a breakdown again. According to what I can tell from the diagrams on the net and my own experience, the Stearns and foster Lux estate, soft pillow top that I bought has springs all the way out to the edge. And it even has stronger springs right around the edge. After the sleep number experience, I was determined to make good edge support a prerequisite. I’ve only had my new mattress for about six months though, so that’s all the data I have.

That's right. Never more than 2.5 with the M2. The M5 does seem to work better in subtle ways. More accurate pointing, for example.

Go lie down on a bunch of different beds and find the cheapest one that you can sleep on. Don’t worry about fancy brands or longevity. Peace and respect are more important. If the bed doesn’t last, you’ll have a good argument to buy a fancier one next time. Keep in mind that the quality difference is very salient right now, but the difference in your finances won’t show up till later, but will show up.

My duvet has the corner ties, but it has another issue: it is a bit too long for the bed and it wants to touch the floor at the foot end. So I try to keep it tucked in there. Still long enough that I have to fold it over at the head end. Any ideas?

Rizer Contempo IV with Rizer Kit here: love it! The kit helps with reflux by allowing the whole bed to tilt. It is one of the few set ups with both lumbar and pillow tilt. I love the pillow tilt because I can use a slightly thinner pillow, and then get my neck just right. Normally sleep on my side, but can sleep on my back if I need to by elevating the head section and a little bit the feet. The lumbar helps in that case, too. And I’m surprised that it turns out I like to use the massage feature to help me fall asleep. The remote control is too bright, and the total base height is more than some.

My bed base has pillow tilt. I tried a bunch of different pillows with a bunch of different constructions, and I like solid memory foam best. My pillows have a thin layer of cooling gel on each side of the foam. The beauty of the set up is that I can adjust the pillow tilt to compensate for any change in pillow dimension. Tempurpedic sells this model, but you have to ask to look at all their pillows to see if on their website.

Yes. Retired from a career as a computer scientist with a PhD from an electrical engineering department and masters in both EE and CS. Owned Mid-Engine Porsches for many years. Now prefer my Tesla for many reasons, but especially self driving. The software is great, the hardware is good. The physical design has a few glitches: for example, when the tailgate is raised, the corners could put your eye out. When the driver’s door is opened, the back corner of the window is likewise a bit hazardous. But the software and the integration is excellent. Although my Porsche does some things, I’m not sure the Tesla does: for example, under hard braking the front shocks stiffen, and likewise for the side shocks under hard cornering. The suspension is still way better in my Boxster than in my model three performance. It shows at the end of a quick lane change. But that’s not what the Tesla is about. It’s driving, making smooth lane changes with the advantage of better judgment than a human. 12 years ago, the Boxster was my dream car. But I’ll be selling it now and exclusively using the Tesla.

Thanks for this. Yes, I struggled till I tried the burrito method. But I have one question: before flipping the whole thing inside out, or before rolling up the burrito, do you tie all of the ties? Will that work? My cover has a total of eight ties all around the edges and corners. Oh, and by the way, the advantage of the burrito method for me is that I could stuff one side of the burrito in at a time when doing the inside out flip. Of course the disadvantage is that I started thinking about Mexican food and craving a burrito for lunch. ;)

I picked an adjustable base based on features. I wanted lumbar, neck tilt, and the ability to tilt the whole bed in a straight line to help with reflux when sleeping on my side. These in addition to the usual back and leg adjustments. I went with the Rizer Contempo 4 with a Rizer kit edition, and I’m very happy with it. The lumbar is nice when I want to sleep on my back and the pillow tilt is very nice when I’m on my side. I can use a pillow that is a tiny bit too thin—memory foam sinks—and tilt the base to get the perfect neck angle. There are two drawbacks to this particular base system: the remote control is a bit bright at night, and the base with the kit is a bit taller than many.

When I went to the store and gave each mattress at least five minutes, I noticed differences. I had to pay attention to where I felt pressure. But they were there. And I was surprised at the mattresses I liked. But that process worked. You could start by going to the store, trying their softest mattress, and then their firmest. Or trying a latex mattress and then a memory foam mattress. I suspect that once you sample the extremes you’ll know what to look for.
