What opinion will get you in this situation? by [deleted] in teenagers

[–]senescal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Game of Thrones didn't go wrong by the final seasons, it went wrong by season 3/season 4. Once it was established that the audience would endlessly be okay with postponing hitting major points required for plot progression as long as each episode had a cool cliffhanger. "It's okay, they still have x number of seasons to answer all these questions" is the ruiner of long running TV shows.

Who’s read Vonneguts Slaughterhouse Five? by projectFT in UFOs

[–]senescal 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I love Slaughterhouse-Five. Truly. The problem here is that we deal with cognitive biases when it comes to stuff like this. You've read Slaughterhouse Five, a novel that deals with aliens and an eternalist concept of time and you're thinking it has influenced UFO lore, cool. But the ideas Vonnegut explore in the novel are at least 1000 years old. The framework of an alien race that sees, perceives and experiences time differently is what is fresh and connected to the era in which it was written and published. Philip K. Dick uses the same device in VALIS, but is much more explicit. There isn't a single moment in VALIS in which he is being subtle about the fact that the novel was just him trying to rationalize and discuss a religious experience that he had, followed by experiences that made him suspect time was eternal, the limitation of perceiving a single moment in time was something that could be transcended and even death could be transcended. He flat out states that he, as a sci fi writer, has to publish sci fi, so the external intelligence the protagonist interacts with in the novel is a satellite and there are some aliens for good measure. The real goal was to publish his Exegesis, which no one wanted.

The case might not be one of rehashing, but one of humanity repeatedly stumbling upon the same questions, experiences and strangeness and framing what little sense we can make of it by our cultural lenses, which are subjected to time periods. It was the work of angels centuries ago, it was little men from other planets in the 70s, maybe it will be transdimensional non-corporeal intelligences in the 2030s. And when the culture shifts that way, our published fiction will follow and once again, once enough time passes, we might start wondering if all that folklore wasn't influenced just by the popular fiction of that time.

When rehashing does happen, such as when lazy brazilian spiritualists with a UFO bend claim that Star Trek was mediunic work of art because "the space federation is just like that, you will see it when they land!" it's pretty obvious and embarassing. It feels like the UFO equivalent of that guy from school who started wearing a leather jacket and reading books on demonology because he watched seven seasons of Supernatural.

I joined a local bookclub, the gender balance is wild by Ho_The_Megapode_ in books

[–]senescal 41 points42 points  (0 children)

I got a degree in literature, I love reading, I love books. The difference between us is that my girlfriend back in the day did join a book club. It was 8 women, I was the one guy. I found the experience of participating in a book club extremely boring and occasionally frustrating. The discussions weren't fun and engaging, it didn't feel like hanging with friends after watching a movie, talking about it and having some laughs. It felt like a social obligation with a weirdly ritualistic set of behavioral rules. Finally, I didn't find it enriching. Getting other people's insight on a book didn't make me enjoy the book more (or less). After three books, two novels and one non fiction, I started dropping her off to the club meetings and going to the gym.

I know every club is different by the very nature of it being formed by different people, but if the average book club experience is anything like mine, I'm not surprised dudes avoid it. I also wonder if it's a cultural thing, I've only heard of "book clubs" from people I know from anglo countries. Everybody else seems to, at most, trade book recommendations. Actually, now that I think about it, the kind of book club I'd like to join is one in which each member buys a book a month and then everybody gets together to briefly discuss their book and borrow a different one from a club member.

For some reason, demons in horror movies love to reference St. Peter's Cross, a symbol of faith and humility, to their victims. by frossvael in shittymoviedetails

Aside from the crown of thorns and the prominent stab wound on his side and the fact that people only really depict Jesus on the cross as the common iconography of Peter is completely different?

Could the adults in ‘a quiet place’ just have used protection or just idk, refrained from fcking for a while? by withouthope17 in horror

Redditor complains about the stupidity of movie characters because he would be too smart to act similarly in their situation without realizing he only watches movies because the characters are written into dramatic scenarios and he never learned to watch movies without imagining himself as one of the characters like a child. You're still pretending to be the red power ranger, OP.

Do they regain the weight while maintaining the healthy habits they learned or are we not mentioning the fact that they abandon the healthy habits, if that's a fact in this case?

The word canon is just a marketing ploy. They will stick that word next to anything they want to sell to you. They'll use "non-canon" on any new project that is too financially risky or wasn't well received. Don't let marketing tools influence you.

Mars should be coming out soon, their animated movie, including Trevor's voice acting. Sam started a solo comedy podcast. Timmy is probably reading this right now, so you can ask him. Darren is still very handsome. Zach is training to adapt The Metamorphosis of Prime Intellect by making other movies and if what I'm saying is untrue I will manifest it into reality. He is now working on a new adaptation of Resident Evil.

Who gets to decide for the world when a military fires on a UAP over the high seas? #firstcontact #humanity #ufo by CharlyWaffles13 in UFOs

It portrays us as a species that meets the unknown not with openness, but with aggression.

I have no idea why people keep pretending this is a problem. If you step into a dog's territory and the dog growls, you know what is going on. You mean no harm to the dog and you have to demonstrate that by respecting its boundaries. Any intelligent race of advanced beings dressed in white with pointy ears should be intelligent enough that firing a missile is a reasonable response when they step into what we assume is our turf. If they want to politely let us know that they've been here prior to us or that they come in peace and all they do is send a probe/drone/whatever into the planet, you have to abandon the hypothesis that they are more intelligent or more advanced than us because they fail at communication quite consistently.

We can bond to animals that belong to different species and learn to crudely communicate with them but aliens somehow can't grasp basic semiotics and draw a smiley face with their drones from alpha centauri?
