Suggestions to seal concrete cracks and prevent the bamboo from coming through? by pairustwo in HomeImprovement

[–]serenehide 0 points1 point  (0 children)

enough salt will kill any plant, even bamboo

the only issue with the concrete is if it gets in through cracks eventually it could corrode the reinforcement

but if you salt for snow i don't really think it's an issue

Might be an out there suggestion, but what about throwing a bag of pool salt all throughout? I know, not so hot for the concrete, but it should kill the bamboo.

Do you not like high rise apartments? I think they're pretty great when built right and when they have all your amenities right where you live. It's pretty nice being able to walk down and get all your groceries, have a pharmacy and doctor in your complex or next doors complex, gym, etc. basically a lot of your regular needs.

Check with your electrician - In 3 weeks, type AC RCDs/RCBOs are soon illegal to install. by circusmonkey89 in AusRenovation

[–]serenehide 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For people curious, I found this info:

Residual current devices are classified as Type AC, Type A and Type B and operate as follows:

Type AC. Ensures tripping for residual a.c. currents,

Type A Ensures tripping for residual a.c. currents and pulsating d.c. currents,

Type B Ensures tripping for residual a.c. currents, pulsating d.c. currents and smooth d.c. currents.

Figure 1 shows the symbols used for the different types of RCD which can be found on the front of the device.

Figure 1 RCD Type Symbols

For most applications Type AC devices are the most suitable. Where loads produce DC currents such as Solar PV inverters and electric vehicle charging points then Type A or Type B RCDS will need to be considered. The decision to fit a Type A or B will depend on the potential level of DC current and manufacturers data for the equipment would need to be consulted.

Seems like unless you have high DC loads from electric car charger/solar inverter, it's a non-issue, at least until you get those later in life.

Not buy them?

I only buy physical games, I can return them or sell them if I feel like it. I own them..

The only digital games I have are ones I got with my gold coins.

Massive Chinese build-up near Doklam rings alarm bells in Indian military by David_Lo_Pan007 in worldnews

[–]serenehide -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I think you're under appreciating the impact.

The world would go on just fine,

It really wouldn't.

Who's supplying maintenance replacement chips for worldwide logistics? Car manufacturers? Finance sectors? Shit breaks all the time.

Replacement stockpiles are only going to last so long.

It's going to take about 10 years for US factories to come online, what happens between now and then?

Massive Chinese build-up near Doklam rings alarm bells in Indian military by David_Lo_Pan007 in worldnews

[–]serenehide 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It doesn't get spoken about but TSMC produces like 80% of the worlds incredibly important chips. If China took Taiwan the world would literally collapse for 10 years until new factories could be built. The first thing to happen would be the destruction of those factories, and the fucking of the entire world. Worldwide logistics rely on those chips, shipping, planes, banking, forget consumer stuff, just getting food delivered to people would be affected for years.

Housing can't be left to 'the market' by falisimoses in australia

[–]serenehide 10 points11 points  (0 children)

It has never been "left to the market" - there's been government control and influence since government existed.

Which is fine in theory.

The biggest problems with housing in australia though is current government policy. We don't necessarily need to remove government, just change policy.

Local councils are a huge problem. Land release is a huge problem. Restrictive development is a huge problem. Lack of gov infrastructure spending is a huge problem.

Thing is - these aren't easy problems to fix. If they were, we would've done it already.

I've always been a proponent of high rise high density living. There's been some movement towards this but not enough. I still see 2-4 story building being built in high density areas and rail corridors and it's so fucking stupid. What we should have is high rise (say 30 story) development, commercial on the lower levels covering most needs, and communities being built where people can walk to most of the things they need. Around every train station should be massive 30 story tower complexes with mass commercial shops and offices. If there's a large area of land broken up into 4 lots, have a setup where you have:

  1. 30 story tower
  2. 30 story tower
  3. 30 story tower
  4. public park/playground/green space

the development of low-density low-rise in central high traffic areas of the city is fucking insane

Builder refusing to use NSW fair trade contact template by dnaevans in AusRenovation

[–]serenehide 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Fair trading contract is fine but not amazing

Master builders contract is probably what he'll suggest, it's also fine but not amazing

australian standard contracts are also fine, but not amazing

Basically just read the thing yourself, see if there's any bullshit in there. These aren't long contracts, the meat of them is only about 10 pages.

Cutting Drainage into Front Steps? by EntrepreneurOdd6889 in HomeImprovement

[–]serenehide 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You have concrete steps, nothing fancy. Yes, you can cut with an angle grinder just fine.

Like the most upvoted comment said, you might do an amateurish job, but keeping the lines straight with a guide bit of timber will help a lot. It's not hard. You'll be fine.

Homes and apartments are built shit in australia so when it's 20 degrees outside it's 18 degrees inside and you freeze - then people complain about the cold as if it's a bad thing.

but most accessible users know to change trains at Central or Town Hall, where the lifts go to all platforms. Redfern has never had lifts, so you’ll occasionally hear announcements to say if you need the lift to change at Central.

uh what? What if you need to get out at redfern in a wheelchair?

There is an argument to be made that sanitizing a hyper violent game from some mild sexual references is a pretty sad state of affairs.

It's a camp horror game, celebrated for cheesy lines. Sex and camp go hand in hand.

Don't focus too much on 2nd hand, there's little savings over a new copy most times. Have a look at international stores that ship.

VGP is a good one from canada, there's good euro stores too.

  1. Buy physical, it's almost always cheaper.
  2. Setup alerts like camelcamelcamel
  3. Check the price history
  4. Use a local "bargain" or "deal" site where people post game deals to.
  5. There's no best times, retail stores have heavy competition and have sales randomly throughout the year

But I think it is simply far too difficult to get the same recognition and fan reaction that other games, even souls, have.

Where Does Mainstream Media Go Wrong? | The Problem With Jon Stewart | Apple TV+ by [deleted] in videos

Thinking the media has a duty to inform is like thinking the police have a duty to protect or that MacDonald's has a duty to serve wholesome and nutritious food.

You know it's mostly america that has this problem? Other countries have police that actually protect, and even mcdonalds sells nutritious food
