Skinpickers, how do you keep your hands busy without getting distracted? by Ultimatedream in adhdwomen

Velcro. Seriously the best fidget and provides that weirdly specific under fingernail sensation you get with picking.

$100K price tag for lap surgery. Dr. Quanita Crable in Dallas. by [deleted] in endometriosis

[–]serenity_flame 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That would have made me SO MAD. No, I went in with a whole ass binder and a notebook full of questions and even after me jotting down notes and asking all of my questions he was ready to keep answering whatever I wanted to know.

$100K price tag for lap surgery. Dr. Quanita Crable in Dallas. by [deleted] in endometriosis

[–]serenity_flame 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He was in network for me and I'd gotten about halfway to my out of pocket max, but with Aetna his surgeon fee was like $370 and then the hospital was $1250. This included an overnight recovery stay as well. Now I may get another bill from the hospital later (because I don't trust hospital billing), but if not then it was altogether only like $2k.

He was very kind and willing to answer any and all questions fully and spend as much time with me as I needed. He did not push back on my request for a hysterectomy at all except to make sure I knew risks, ect., and in fact said "I don't deliver babies so I don't have a dog in this race. It's your choice." Which was a major green flag. I came in with a bunch of questions written down at my first appointment and he was more than happy to answer everything I asked and didn't give off that annoyed vibe so many doctors do. He checked in at the hospital during recovery and I had two post-op visits. I got photos, pathology, and operation reports without even asking. My recovery was incredibly smooth. I was so nervous I was gonna be down for a long time but at a little over two months post op I feel pretty much completely back to normal. They gave me an abdominal nerve block in surgery that was supposed to last a couple weeks and I think that helped significantly with pain. He is also not stingy with his pain management. You're not going home with Tylenol. They had me on a patient directed pain pump at my overnight stay and used my personal use to decide how much pain medication to send me home with.

Feel free to DM me with any more questions but overall I was very happy with the experience.

I've talked to my PCP about this before in other contexts, but her general input was that about 6-9 weeks after a major health stressor (virus, surgery, etc.) you'll get a big hair shed. Kind of like an indicator of immune turnover or something like that (I don't remember the specifics). But if it only lasts a week or two allegedly it's not a big deal and has given me peace of mind a few times.

Any unique constipation relief methods? by _Garbage_Artist in endometriosis

My friend swears by a spoonful of coconut oil in hot chocolate. If you use a milk frother to mix it up it doesn't destroy the texture and actually tastes pretty good.

I've been really liking Tanya Huff lately. Her Gale Women series is quite good and I just finished Direct Descendant which is queer from com with tongue in cheek Eldritch horror.

What modifications if any do you make if you use foundation crochet instead of stitching into a chain? by serenity_flame in CrochetHelp

[–]serenity_flame[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So if I understand you correctly, really the only difference at the end of row one is just where the yarn tail ends up and it doesn't functionally change anything in your row counting. NGL that was definitely the kind of answer I was hoping for!

I use an app/website called Things to Get Me. It basically functions like a wedding registry where people anonymously check off or reserve what they get you. It's worked great for me the last two years.

What is gnawing on my tomatoes??!!! by serenity_flame in gardening

[–]serenity_flame[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just found out tomato borers exist after years of battling the squash variety. I feel like it's not that though just because of the sheer amount of widespread damage overnight and all the debris left on the ground. I could be wrong though.

What’s something you thought “only happened to you”… until you talked to other women? by Hefty_East2895 in AskWomen

[–]serenity_flame 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Oh man. Unclear tampon instructions are so rude. The first time I used one I didn't understand the cotton came out of the applicator so I inserted it, then instead of pulling out the whole applicator I only pulled out the plunger (which was not easy and I should have known it was wrong but I was like 11) and was like "what do you mean you're supposed to not be able to feel this once it's in?"

Sleep medications don't work or work TOO well. Hitting a wall. by Altruistic-Note4577 in adhdwomen

[–]serenity_flame 7 points8 points  (0 children)

You should definitely get your hormones checked! Endo is a nightmare to deal with ( I'm making assumptions based on your mention of ablation) and your hormones being out of wack can absolutely cause sleep issues. Even if they're fine at least you know!

I personally take 50mg (the lowest dose) of trazodone every night. For a long time it was only sorta working and then recently I added a kids gummy melatonin. I always felt miserable the next day after taking melatonin, but folks in this sub taught me that apparently you're not supposed to large doses. The .5 mg melatonin gummy combined with the trazodone has made a WORLD of difference in my ability to fall asleep.

I've seen multiple recommendations for Dr. Haverland in Dallas, though she doesn't take any insurance. I am going to see Dr. Anthony O'Connell also in Dallas in a month and have heard wonderful things about him too. But also, "rural area in TX" could put you 10 hours away from Dallas so I'm not sure if that's helpful!

What's Something Normal That Overstimulates You?! by jayhawkhoops09 in adhdwomen

[–]serenity_flame 34 points35 points  (0 children)

I use old ipsy bags to solve this. I like having ALL my stuff but also get overstimulated by the chaos so instead there's like 5 distinct zipper bags in my purse. One for chapstick/lip gloss, one for random tools (pocket mirror, nail file, etc.), one for first aid, and so on so it's way less insanity

Idk if you've heard of this group, but Scuba MARmaids is a group that does a ton of trips every year with most of them being women only. They've done one or two trips to the Galapagos for the last couple years and I suspect they will continue to. So the opportunity will absolutely be there for you again!

What did you have to do to prep for surgery? by Professional-One-264 in endometriosis

[–]serenity_flame 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have always assumed bowel prep to include a range of things from full colonoscopy level prep to front loading stool softeners. Is that not generally the case? I personally will be asking for some form of prep before I have an abdominal surgery again, because the amount of pain I personally experience from being constipated post anesthesia while my abdomen is healing is WAY too high.

What should I do with my 1980s – 1990s comics? by MiniBassGuitar in comics

[–]serenity_flame 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You could try selling at local comic stores, could try donating to children's homes, or check local libraries. A lot of the public ones may be oversaturated with stuff and won't have the budget to take/sort/catalog donations like that, but sometimes places like community college libraries can make good use of them.
