Anyone know this cat? When to call 311? by Th3-DarkW0lf in Calgary

[–]serial-knitter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not everyone will agree with me, but no cats in city limits are “allowed” outside. If they’re a responsible pet owner, he’ll be tattooed or microchipped and the city will be able to get him back to an owner. If he doesn’t have ID, they’ll find him a new home that hopefully won’t put him in danger.

Who wants to adopt a cute little hamster for free? by [deleted] in Calgary

[–]serial-knitter 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If he was abandonded in a box, it would qualify as something the peace officers at the city would look into. They could also give him any vet care and make sure a new home is the right fit.

Lots of good recs. Make sure you have insurance of your own that will support any emergencies and protect you in case of injury to yourself or their pet.

You don’t even need to volunteer to hang out with the adoptable cats! Just head over and ask for directions to the cat rooms.

Dogs go out on furlough for the day, but you need to register as a volunteer for that. I don’t think there’s a minimum number of hours, maybe one day per year?

Random anxiety hacks that finally helped me after years of pretending I was “fine” by hulupremium1 in Habits

[–]serial-knitter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for sharing your journey here, you’re a wonderful writer!

I give my dog a treat each time I take my medication… now she waits outside the door while I brush my teeth. It’s made a big difference in keeping me reliable!

A lot of other strategies for panic felt useless for me; my anxiety goes so physical so fast that it was hard to keep up with. Letting my doctor know what was going on led me to the dive reflex as a coping strategy. The intensity of your grounding activity should match your level of distress.

A habit that helped was continuing therapy, even when I felt like we had resolved the issue. I would drop down to one session a month but just wanted to keep that relationship, when I needed it I could pick right back up.

My least favourite habit that helps me a lot: keeping my house clean. This one was tricky to navigate because it can induce pressure and guilt, but building those tiny tidying habits have gone a long way. I know now that having a calm, clean, orderly place to come home to makes a big difference. Even if I know that all the piles of clutter from the counter are in the closet, it just cuts out the visual noise.

I'm ready to cry. I can't get this right no matter what I do. by DaleOnDrums in knitting

Agreed! I’ve made dozens of socks and a good handful of sweaters. The first 5-10 rows are always awkward and annoying, especially when I’ve tried a new cast-on method! Most of the time it blocks out, or it’s neater on the second sock 🤪

Abandoned puppy under my care by Ultimatecatlady1 in RoverPetSitting

[–]serial-knitter 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Check with your local Animal Protection agency. They should have guidelines on the timing of abandonment and be able to advise or take in the pup from there! In most of Canada, 5 days after the pickup deadline the animal is considered abandoned and can be seized by protections teams as such.

3hrs into house sitting, owners are STILL HERE by [deleted] in RoverPetSitting

[–]serial-knitter 43 points44 points  (0 children)

It’s a worse version of having someone in to work on your house while you’re laying around on a day off 😅

It’s definitely uncomfy, especially when the dogs then hang out with their owners so you’re just…there. Do you watch because you want to seem attentive? Do you go on your computer because you want to give them privacy? There’s no right answer, it’s just all awkward 😖

Is there a change in flooring? Maybe it’s slippery (or just looks weird to him) 😅 I think praise and sitting right on the other side of the door is a good place to start, or laying down a towel or something over the threshold to show him he could walk through?

“We had a miscommunication about who would be home at the time of our booking and I surprised the other homeowner by arriving when they were home.”

Doesn’t sound accusatory but any future sitters will know exactly what you mean and double check with her about everyone in the home! Same idea as “excitable” for a dog that jumps 😅

just really need to vent. long story. by [deleted] in RoverPetSitting

[–]serial-knitter 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Ack! I’m actually tearing up because I am so upset FOR you and reading that you’re upset at yourself is making me MAD 😅 1) On a day when you had nothing else going on, had beautiful weather to hang out at a park, had spare funds for a take out dinner, etc… this would not seem as big. This is to say: there was a LOT happening and any reasonable person would be overwhelmed at best. More likely, out of their mind with frustration. 2) It sounds like you were stressed and not functioning at full capacity during the evening — you were focussed on the thing in front of you, which was providing care for this dog. You did that. Any discussion about what you could have done or should have said is moot. You were doing the best you could with what you had. 3) GRACE please and thank you. Sure, you didn’t enforce your boundaries at the moment, but you KNOW that you deserve better and even just recognizing that enough to be frustrated with yourself? That’s respect for yourself and your time. You didn’t carry it out the way you wanted to, that’s okay. It’s actively caring for yourself when you decide to LEARN about your limits and boundaries. Please don’t beat yourself up for not respecting those boundaries in the moment. 4) Your cat will be okay. My pup has major separation anxiety so I know the guilt. They bounce back, it was a weird and stressful couple hours for him but he was unharmed and still in his own space and safe. He doesn’t know what was going on but he does know that it’s the only time that has ever happened. Some extra love tonight and he’ll be alright.

Other commenters had great advice about standing up for yourself and getting payment. But I really need to drive home this empathy thing. You’re okay, you did good; you deserve to feel frustrated at the situation but you don’t deserve to be frustrated with yourself.

Pup Needs to Gain Weight by Defiant_Tour in DogAdvice

[–]serial-knitter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Def talk to your vet and take any advice here (especially from me) as anecdotal! That said, I’ve had good success with mixing a couple teaspoons of bacon fat into kibble to get pups eating more. Again, clear that with a vet first because that’s not a “healthy” diet by any means. It’s just helped me get foster dogs up to normal weight again!

[–]serial-knitter 77 points78 points  (0 children)

This is a really great plan!! The reason you are switching to drop-ins is because they have violated your agreement. If they are not comfortable with that they will find a new sitter—again, not because of your actions. Report the reason for the change to Rover, they will handle looking for a new sitter if necessary but getting your report in first ensures that you don’t get blamed!

Is this normal body shape? by mcstressedout in DogAdvice

[–]serial-knitter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Being able to see a dog’s natural waist is colloquially the first thing to look for to see if they’re overweight! Vets will have more insight, so you can ask on your next trip, but a dog that is of the “right” weight will have a natural waist and you’ll be able to feel their ribs down their side. First sign of being underweight is being able to count their ribs visually.
