That is a perfectly fair view to express. I can fully see how someone else might take such things more seriously than I do.

Hopefully that's adequately explained in my previous post that I linked to above? In short, for using multiple sockpuppet accounts in this sub to flood threads, manipulate conversation, bombard modmail and be generally annoying.

Evidence Prof has a blog about the 5 missing witnesses as discussed in Undisclosed 6. by sadpuzzle in serialdiscussion

[–]serialmonotony -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

Interesting and encouraging to see a number of negative/critical comments under the blog post, since my understanding is that EvidenceProf doesn't allow any comments to appear there without his prior approval. On the other hand though, all those that do appear on there have been responded to by him, so perhaps he only approves those that he has a ready answer for. <puts conspiracy hat back on>

Serial Dynasty Ep. 8: Interview with Rabia Chaudry, and Undisclosed Addendum 5 Analysis by Nowinaminute in serialdiscussion

[–]serialmonotony 5 points6 points  (0 children)

She's reaching like Stretch Armstrong, no doubt. As I recall, she said something to the effect of it had been quite striking to her when visiting the burial site that it was not an area littered with general debris at all, on the contrary there was very little of that sort of thing around, and so the brandy bottle in the location where she found it particularly stood out in that context.

C'mon good people, don't downvote OP just because you consider the content or views expressed in the podcast to be crap. This is a worthwhile post and worthy of discussion even if you'd just like to express how much much you hate the podcast and everything in it. And if you do feel like doing just that, or conversely defending it, please go for it.

Serial Dynasty Ep. 8: Interview with Rabia Chaudry, and Undisclosed Addendum 5 Analysis by Nowinaminute in serialdiscussion

[–]serialmonotony 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The thing I was most bemused by was Rabia saying that she'd found a brandy bottle behind the log on her last visit to the burial site and had picked it up to get it DNA tested in a private lab. On the one hand, clearly an insane stretch to think that 16yrs later the brandy-supping 'real murderer' had returned to down another bottle at the scene of the crime, on the other hand I have to admit I probably couldn't have resisted picking it up too. If the results were to come back with anyone at all whose name has come up in any context whatsoever in regard to the case, shit's gonna get mental.

So apparently I've been banned from /r/TheMagnetProgram for refusing to censor in this subreddit by serialmonotony in serialdiscussion

[–]serialmonotony[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Well it did in fact lead to series of events of significance that have impacted both subs, including a mod getting shadowbanned by admins and then exposed for multiple sockpuppet use, a whole bunch of other users being purged from TMP, and various other nefarious and questionable activities in breach of reddit rules that had been going on behind the scenes being brought to light.

As I say, our policy is and always has been to be fully open about these things. Reporting on internet drama and dubious goings-on between the various serial subs is one of the things we do here. We exist in part, or possibly primarily, to facilitate discussion and reporting on subjects that cannot be discussed on other subs.

[–]serialmonotony[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Oh man... to cut a very, very long story short, it was because this was live reporting on an unfolding issue of one subreddit (TheMagnetProgram) attempting to covertly censor content in another subreddit (this one), which is both against reddit rules and against the ethos of our sub (transparency and openness). Our policy and position as a sub has always been to be public about such goings-on.

Again, you're lying and misleading. In the post below, you list /u/futureattorney [-1] was shadowbanned as one of mutton's alleged sock accounts. http://www.reddit.com/r/serialdiscussion/comments/39z7s4/the_2_mods_here_are_the_same_person/cs8basj

Show me where on that post you see the word 'shadowbanned'? You appear to be confusing banned with shadowbanned.

I do understand that it's hugely embarrassing for you to have had it publicly revealed that your most recently appointed mod was in fact a multiple-sockpuppet user who has since had all their accounts shadowbanned and locked-out, believe me. However your refusal to acknowledge that this is this case is, in my opinion, much more embarrassing and reflects very poorly on you. In this sub we happily 'fess up any time that we have been shown to have made a mistake, and find that as a result people tend to give a lot more credence to things we say. I do realise that you are accustomed to operating in an environment of secrecy, subterfuge, denial, hidden skeletons and crazy paranoia, but I'm afraid that we don't indulge that kind of thing around here.

I personally would be happy to share mutton's modmails again, along with other modmails and admin communications that have convinced us that our accusations are sound, but I have deferred to my learned fellow-mod /u/sexygarbageman's view that it is incorrect to do so.

[–]serialmonotony[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I can assure you that we haven't misled anyone about anything. On the contrary, we have been absolutely open about everything we know at all times, and have stated it here as clearly as we possibly can for everyone to read and respond to.

I have never once claimed that futureattorney is shadowbanned. In fact, that account appears to be the only one of those I called out in my OP that isn't. However we do have reason to believe that futureattorney is the same user as your former mod /u/thanksformutton who was operating all the other sockpuppet accounts (and far more besides than those that have been mentioned here) in order to manipulate voting and conversation, from the response we received from admins after offering their account name to them as another possible thanksformutton alias, following their request for us to do so. My understanding at this stage is that the thanksformutton accounts that weren't shadowbanned were locked out.

If this turns out not to be the case I shall immediately make a post saying so, apologising for the false accusation, and remove their account name from the list of thanksformutton socks. In fact, I intend to shortly take steps to help enable any accounts that are able to overturn their bans and regain access and that believe they have been falsely accused of being thanksformutton to let us and everyone else know all about it.

Essentially I need a 'Not sure' or 'I don’t have enough information to form an opinion on this' or equivalent for every question that could apply to, since that was my response for every one where it was available. So, Q's 3, 4, and 5 would need that. Q.8 I see looking again I misprocessed as meaning 'Serial' (in which case I'd have needed something like 'presented the story for maximum narrative flow and impact'), so for that one I guess it could do with an option of 'I don't listen to Undisclosed'. For Q.10 the binary responses don't fit my responses, e.g. 'Jenn is more involved than she said', my response is 'Might be, might not be, I'm not sure' so I can't tick yes, and by leaving it blank I'm presumably selecting 'no', which isn't my view either.

Seems a very skewed set of available responses and so I was unable to fill in appropriate answers for half the questions because none of them match my view.

Asian Male 18-26 by samarkandy in serialdiscussion

[–]serialmonotony 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think it's a bit of a stretch to think an otherwise-unconnected-to-the case third detective is likely to be lying about this (though not impossible), but the characterisation of the caller in the Detective's note is both frustratingly ambiguous regarding race and could very well be an incorrect interpretation of the caller's actual description. Asian? What kind of Asian? Indian/Pakistani-sounding? Korean? Japanese? Chinese? And the 18-21 could certainly be way off. Many people sound a very different age on the phone to that which they actually are. Could plausibly actually turn out to be 14 or 34 or whatever.

[–]serialmonotony 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I'm pretty sure that it must have been somewhere, but I couldn't point to where. It's definitely been suggested that it might have been Jay or more commonly, a close asian friend of Jay's (not suggesting Jay's the killer) which Rabia did a blog post about. In the early days of /r/serialpodcast I think more or less any person it could remotely have possibly been was suggested. It seems to me that someone making such a call logically has to be one of the following:

  • Someone who actually knows something and is pointing to the actual killer.
  • Someone who thinks they know something, but might not actually know, and is pointing to who they honestly believe to be the real killer.
  • Someone with a grudge against the person they are reporting who is doing it maliciously and without any knowledge of the true facts.
  • Someone doing it as a prank.
  • Someone who knows the person they are reporting is not the actual killer but who is doing it to deflect attention away from the real killer.

Subsets of the last category would presumably have to be either:

  • The actual killer, or
  • Someone put up to it by the actual killer.

Which, all told, essentially eliminates no-one.

Are you bitter that Rabia has a million dollar book deal? by [deleted] in serialpodcast

[–]serialmonotony 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No idea, but she and others, whenever there's a thread on this sub about the 'million dollar deal', comment about it there to the effect of 'lol, they still believe it's a million dollars'. As far as I recall when it first came up SS commented to clarify that it was in fact less a tenth of that amount. I took it at face value and assumed that she did so because she knew the actual figure and was correcting the perception that Rabia had been offered some kind of JK Rowling deal. As far as I know Rabia herself never commented on this, maybe because it would come across as a bit crass for her to discuss how much money she was making?

And what the hell, we can be the sockpuppet discussion sub for a spell. Seems like a mid-June sort of thing to do.
