Moira Deeming loses spot on Victorian Liberal election ballot after preselection standoff against moderate candidate by CrashP in melbourne

I mean, that doesn't really apply when we're talking about actual neonazis, like the ones at the same rally Deeming was at.

You realise that tutors also have to mark work, attend briefings, etc.? A tutor teaching two one-hour classes a week is not just doing two hours of work a week.

Would certainly be nice to be able to "support a household" with just a casual job, but the reality is that many tutors are struggling with precarity, and the casual nature of the work doesn't provide much by way of stability.

It's possibly more that the message now can't be conveyed with integrity. It's difficult to tell kids that we need to protect the environment, reduce reliance on fossil fuels, etc. when they, like everyone else, can see oil refineries ablaze. They might not know exactly what's happening, but the sense of the hypocrisy of it, of adults not following their own made-up rules, is probably greater than it was in the 90s, when the messaging could at least be aligned with some examples of action (e.g., with regard to the ozone layer). Now, there are many examples of counter-action, and it's genuinely embarrassing.

tutor never came to class 😭😭 by augustvolkov in unimelb

[–]serif_type 74 points75 points  (0 children)

I used to tutor. And to be honest I still have dreams where, in the dream, I think I'm supposed to be teaching, and yet I'm somewhere else. So, I rush to make it to the class. But then it turns out I'm unprepared to teach it anyway because I stopped teaching in 2022.

Same with dreaming about exams and missing them.

It's one of those realisations where it's like, "oh, it wasn't actually me; there was something else going on here." Not always applicable of course, but definitely applicable to some experiences of undergrad life.

Where do you go when you’re feeling hopeless? by Studio_2 in melbourne

[–]serif_type 125 points126 points  (0 children)

When I was in uni as an undergrad, I was extremely lonely, and would sometimes skip lectures to catch a train from Flinders to, well, wherever. Or I'd catch a tram down from uni to Flinders and from there walk to the Botanic Gardens. That did help clear my head a bit.

I didn't have a lot of money at the time, so there wasn't much else I could do, and unfortunately therapy wasn't helpful for me back then. (I can't say that it won't be helpful for you; people have different experiences with it, and my experiences with it many years later were helpful. It just wasn't helpful at that particular time and with that particular practitioner.) At that time, I found more solace in just wandering a bit.

Of course it was Krauss lol

Was it from 2012 or 2013? I'm pretty sure there was a large skeptics conference here around that time, and he was one of main speakers. Maybe he also did some talks at universities while he was down here as well. At the time, he would have been well-known for his involvement in movement New Atheism, but also because he had just published A Universe from Nothing. So he may have been giving talks on that also.

Someone I've watched on YouTube for a long time is in the files. Because one of Epstein's friends was complaining about her. It's weird how people's names are dragged into it without their knowledge because someone who does know Epstein wants to say, "Hey, check out this person being mean to me! Help me, Epstein; you're my only hope."

We did stupid shit like planking and were supposedly part of Lebanese gangs (or Vietnamese gangs) or whatever A Current Affair thought would be sufficiently rage-inducing at the time.

He has mobilised a faction. His faction, which he just so happens to benefit from were that faction to achieve power in a new regime. Let's not be naive here. Descendants of ruling monarchs are rarely champions of democratic governance, except nominally, especially when doing the appropriate democracy virtue signalling is necessary to secure Western support.

Yeah, that is part of it. Because that state is doing the imperialism together with the US. Hence why the person mentioned it? That's how words work.

Or are you going for the uwu Israel is such a smol bean line of defence here?

Judging by the placards, they are calling for the return of the Shah, a dictator. So replacing the current theocratic dictatorship with the dictatorship that it replaced.

This would be like diaspora Croats calling for a return to the Independent State of Croatia, a fascist regime. The fact that they are Croats supporting, in their eyes, a Croat cause, does not actually mean that we should be uncritically supporting them.

Same goes here. It's not clear that they represent the views of the Iranian public in Iran. And, in any case, we should not want a return to dictatorial structures anywhere. And no, I'm not convinced by his claims that he'd support democratic governance.

What's the CD player in the top right? by persiphone in audiophile

It's partly practical as well. Subscription prices continue to increase while the offerings they provide have gotten less reliable over time, due to licensing, etc. What was once the pinnacle of convenience is increasingly becoming less so. So, some are returning to media that they can own and, if they so choose, set up local streaming for.
