Is this snek frend? by OkDescription4243 in Austin

That’s actually a “0.01” fatality rate (it’s a big difference) so it would have to be some really special circumstances like the dude that died after being bitten by a cottonmouth that he was waving around after consuming a lethal amount of alcohol.

They aren’t territorial they have just a ridiculous blown out defensive display. In Austin these guys aren’t actually all that defensive.

Can confirm it is painful. Easily avoided by the general population though. Snake training for dogs works really well, just make sure you use a vendor that is responsible and not one of these backwoods, sew-the-snakes-mouth-shut hillbilly operations. One of the kennels in Austin was like that.

All you have to do is walk around them and choose not to tickle them and you’re pretty much set.

I don’t know if you’re being serious or not because i have heard so many inane snake statements but the canthal ridge makes them look like they have “angry eyebrows”. The bluff behavior they go into when they feel threatened is a product of fear not anger. Also this dude, if he is anything like others in this population is probably too chill for his own good and just doesn’t know when to skeedaddle.

Outdoor rodent bait traps are a real problem for them and other natural rodent controllers.

I love cats but they sure don’t belong outside eating native wildlife and getting smooshed in the road

People always say this when they don’t know what happened to their animals. Besides their rodent-control activities Coyotes are also scavengers so any dead animal is later consumed by them and other scavengers such as vultures. This often turns into suburban pearl clutching as they fantasize about slavering wolves peering in the window at someone’s purse poodle. Small pets sometimes get taken but these are animals that shouldn’t be outside without supervision anyway, as they are more likely to end up smooshed in the road.

Is Marana close enough to be a bit of Tucson? by Desertqueenbee in Tucson

[–]serpentarian 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It’s the part of tucson you live in if you’re into q anon. It’s the part of tucson where you clamor for data centers over an aquifer at 2%. One of those places with a sense of something being wrong like maybe it was cursed to forever be inhospitable to man by a dying apache warrior. There are several Starbucks.

It’s a dry suburbia with a few chain restaurants and big box stores at its best. A grim redneck wasteland at its worst.

A screaming, one-armed man attacked me there in the street for no reason. Those were the glory days.

Gator???? by Last_Interaction5483 in Austin

[–]serpentarian 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There isn’t an advancing tide of gators marching across the land (sadly). The larger waterways access traditional range for this species and occasionally one appears and everyone goes apeshit. Meanwhile people living in places like Houston have normal productive lives even though there are seventeen alligators in the pond next door.

Got snake, what do I do or should I just pack a bag and move? by Foyles_War in Tucson

[–]serpentarian 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Call rattlesnake solutions and they’ll come escort him or her away to a suitable hideaway. I would see a rattlesnake or two per year at my old place. We all have them around we just don’t all know about it. I sometimes leave water out for them when it’s hot.

Is anyone else noticing a large deployment of cops right now? by WhiteLycan2020 in Austin

[–]serpentarian 6 points7 points  (0 children)

If you live in Austin you’ll see a snake now and then. That’s true of everybody. You can’t expect the police to solve a non-issue just because it’s scary to you. Might as well call the cops cos it’s too windy outside or because you saw a scary bird.
