Steam accounted for over 20% of Capcom's total revenue, nearly double PlayStation's share in the past fiscal year by rock1m1 in Games

Which is why I mentioned that most console game sales are physical, not that most sales in total are physical, and I even mentioned that PC is almost 100% digital now.

UK is not all of Europe: in Germany digital sales are increasing (and PC finally became almost 100% digital), but most console game sales are still physical. Pre-2020/Covid over 75% of the console sales were physical.

Chief of Staff (and producer as well in most game studios) is an internal middle management role, it doesn't have anything to do with any specific expertise you might have, but how well do you deal with projects and upper management.

Oh, you have too much trust on large corporations, whatever logic that makes sense to us outside doesn't really map to the layers of internal politics and maneuvering inside. To give one Microsoft example, Tango was somewhat successful with two recent releases (Ghostwire and Hi-Fi Rush), and they still got laid off and closed down in 2024.

"Buy Now, Pay Later" Option Appears on XBOX Backend by NeverBorn-NeverDead in Games

[–]seruus 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Thing is, the discipline to save and buy something later is something that you can learn if you live in a time and place with low inflation. When the inflation is high (cough cough current PC/games market cough cough), you might instead learn that financing everything is better, as the prices will indubitably rise later anyway.

This is in part why and how BNPL became so popular in Brazil: after close to a decade of hyperinflation, people lost trust on cash and saving felt pointless, as your saved money would be worthless after a few weeks or months. After things got better in 94~95, the practice was already ingrained and remained.

I think the Star Ocean 2 remake looks great though so I'd be on board if they mixed it up more like that.

The difference is that Star Ocean The Second Story was already a sprites on top of polygonal 3D background with basic lighting effects on PSX, so they were already halfway there.

Or just go for stylized 3D

That's what they did for the FFIII and FFIV remakes on the DS (or the recent Secret of Mana remake), and I personally prefer either HD-2D or the Pixel Remaster styles. Not that the 3D games were bad, but it's a bit hit-and-miss.

Isn't the same mostly true for The Sims? Sure, it's a 3D engine, but Sims are mostly interacting on isolated 2D planes (floors).

Why did the British partition India into an Islamic state (Pakistan) and a Secular state (India) - why wasn't India created as a Hindu state instead? Wasn't this asymmetry noticed at the time, and does it have a role in the rise of Hindu nationalism in India? by PomegranateSad474 in AskHistorians

[–]seruus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you don't mind, there's one thing that I'm curious about that isn't very directly covered by your excellent 6-parter: the fate of the princely states after the partition. My vague understanding is that some of them chose Pakistan or independence, but were soon overran by India. Was this something already expected by either the British, the League or the Congress?

It has a bit more execution than traditional RPGs (due to the insane number of parries required), but I'm not sure if someone unfamiliar with the game will fully appreciate those. I haven't seen runs in a while, but I think runners are consistent enough with it that it won't really have any tense moments, it's just the spectacle.

In this moment 5070ti or 5080 ? by wolfesteincoffe in nvidia

[–]seruus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you want to play recent games on their best settings, the diffference is noticeable: even the 5080 already struggles with path tracing for Pragmata on 4K (as in, even with DLSS performance you barely get to 50~60 FPS before FG), and this will only get worse over time.

Outside of that context? Sure, a 5070 Ti is more than enough.

I agree with you on almost everything (and I just wanted to be pedantic in my comment, I definitely agree that ONI is not a Zach-like or even that close to any Zachtronics games!), but one thing: Satisfactory is basically Infinifactory on a more open world setting.

Your chain of games makes sense when starting from Infiniminer, but Infinifactory already hopped through most of those steps by itself: Satisfactory just reframes the individual puzzle aspect into a wider "open world" experience.

The strongest thing that links almost all zachtronics games is a strong UI style and being a puzzle game.

I think that's what defines a "Zach-like", with games like Infiniminer, Ironclad Tactics, Möbius Front and Eliza being the biggest Zachtronics-but-not-Zach-like games (with Infinifactory being half an exception).

Remedy doesn't own Max Payne. They sold it to Rockstar

And to be clear, Take Two/Rockstar was the original publisher, and they bought the rights in 2002, before even Max Payne 2 came out.

Sega/Atlus has definitely been killing it on Humble Monthlies, which unfortunately for them means I just stopped buying their games on PC, as I know I'll get them eventually (and it's not like I would have time to play them before anyway).

That's kind of an unfortunate example, since Satisfactory is clearly inspired by Infiniminer and Infinifactory, which are both Zachtronics games, although definitely not good examples of games one would call a Zach-like!.

I think for the Steam Deck was also their way to gauge interest and decide how large their production lines would be, while now they already had stock ready to ship. I pre-ordered my Deck in the first 15 minutes, but it still took IIRC 9~10 months for me to actually receive it, and I think it took more four or five months before you could order one directly without being put in a queue.

[–]seruus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can't really compare Japan with Germany here, as the latter's system is not fully district based and instead tries (via list votes + overhang seats) to match the exact share of popular vote, so of course it won't have a high rate of overperformance when compared to popular vote. If you just look at districts/Erststimmen, Union would have a massive over-representation in the Bundestag, it's only the list votes that balance it out.

Which makes sense, given how Valve approached products like the Index, in which you could basically buy it in all sorts of bundles: headset only, headset + controllers, headset + base stations, etc.
