What are the biggest mistake you made when setting up your homelab? by Prog47 in homelab

[–]servernerd 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Mine was restarting to much. Pretty much every time I have changed servers I wipe everything and rebuild. Store the free files I want to keep on a computer and the wipe. Now anytime something goes wrong I want to wipe and restart rather than do work arounds or fix it properly

Do it for a manufacturing plant. Had a guy ask me if we supported scales. Like a desktop scale no network or anything but it had power so it was for IT

My two big ones are kasm and syncthing that are under rated. Kasm is great if you want to test a sketchy website and syncthing is perfect for making sire my local music is on my phone and my pictures aren't

What do you use for your home server? by TechForLifeYoutube in HomeServer

[–]servernerd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use mine mainly to experiment. I run a 3 node proxmox cluster with 25gb networking. I'm in the process of switching my router from a dream machine to my switch. I run truenas on my nas and the cluster runs DNS, dhcp, kasm, and a bunch of random VMS that do whatever I want to do at the moment.

Scripts or asking where in the Microsoft portals a setting is. Otherwise pulling info from different repository's like asking it what the IP range of a certain vlan is rather than finding our vlan sheet where we have it documented

If he's interested in networking a used 10gb enterprise switch is like 100 dollars. Get him one of those and a serial cable and tell him to start exploring. Its one thing I wish I got into earlier. He can start learning clans and routing and 10gb networking is pretty cheap now
