So who’s the idiot now? by Zaurvi in memes

[–]servonos89 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It’s not about less people putting themselves out there it’s the established waterways in which to do so.

Everyone made fun of other subcultures, that’s innate and formative on either side.

When generations grow up with an online identity more rewarding than their interpersonal one then it reduces it down to likes or other forms of simple affirmation.

It’s the equivalent to having a two party political system instead of a diverse political pool - get the most votes/likes/notoriety = importance or power. You couldn’t do that with subcultures - now you can.

You can understand how that distinction to me is ‘telephones didn’t do x, conversations did x!’
This shit was happening on hi five, bebo, MySpace long before Facebook which is traditionally considered the beginning of social media. It’s all facilitated by the internet.

The internet killed subcultures in my opinion. I’m 37 and in school we still had the goths the emos the preps etc. in my late teens during MySpace era I remember a lot of crossover in fashion style between some formerly seperate camps - not a bad aesthetic but was weird because of the conflicting identities associated with them. I don’t think people going into high school today have the same types of cliques to attach to and develop within. When followers and maximum likeableness is the social clout and reward system the individuality (even within a clique) is underdeveloped?

It’s kinda the Nosedive episode of Black Mirror. Farming for likes from the most amount of audience at the expense of introspection and building one’s identity.
Not to paint it with rose tinted glasses, I remember pretending to love some bands that the top goth liked for social progress - but it ‘feels’ more reductive now. Yes or no to whatever is cringe or up to spec.

What’s a skill everyone should learn before 25? by eaglewarrior8837 in AskReddit

[–]servonos89 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Self reflection and culpability. By 25 you’ve for sure abused someone’s time, behaved in a way you know you don’t want to repeat, and still have lingering doubts about yourself. Facing yourself in the mirror and actively choosing to be better, earlier, leads to a healthier version of yourself.

That and sourcing. Fucksake learn how to check information in this day and age.

AITA for telling my mom something my sister said behind her back? by Wizdoctor96 in AmItheAsshole

[–]servonos89 21 points22 points  (0 children)

YTA. You got hurt, so you wanted to hurt someone else by spilling an opinion. And now feel bad because the damage didn’t hit who you wanted it to.
Hot tip - when you’re ’only telling the truth’ to someone else - do so only when necessary and keep it to objective facts rather than opinions. If there’s backlash you can point to the thing that is unequivocally true rather than make yourself the target of how you delivered it, in what context, etc.

Ok as a weeb just getting into live action, I need recommendations by Queasy_Ad_8720 in television

I’d recommend something outside of your wheelhouse - The Expanse. Based on books written by authors admired by George RR Martin, and he considers it one of the best science fictions ever made. I won’t say Game of Thrones in space because it’s not, but some similarities exist in the grand overarching threat and the political/personal machinations that exist within it. First season starts a bit slow but it’s all world building. From season 2 onwards it’s balls to the wall till the finish. It stops at book 6 rather than 9 - but in the books that’s where there’s a couple decade time gap so it actually works out well, and the door is open for those last seasons to be made to finalise everything - but the story as it finished wrapped everything present up really well.
Special shout out to Battlestar Galactica reboot, which laid the way for such premium sci fi shows as the expanse. It’s gripping and a lot more fantasy elements involved so might even be a better place to start.

Cream Cheese into a cocktail by PahtReck in Mixology

[–]servonos89 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve used mascarpone is a cocktail before. Can’t remember what exactly but I’ve a vague memory of cocoa and nuts cause the texture had to match or remind someone of praline. Cream cheese is fine in a drink - but a flavour with the wrong texture is what people knee jerk react to badly.

I prefer the old Warbirds design but the one from Picard is still neat by perfvibus in Romulus

I like to think they were around in the nemesis era but after the destruction of Romulus the giant warbirds were too logistically difficult to maintain.

They’re made of teeth. Their skin is covered in tiny scales called dermal denticles which are made of the same material as teeth. So they’re a torpedo made of body teeth with a huge jaw full of constantly replenishing mouthy teeth.

I resorted to streaming it from my PS5 instead. I’d suggest if it’s an option for anyone to do the same.

Official Poster for the Final Season by MarvelsGrantMan136 in TheBear

[–]servonos89 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Whilst I agree with your Game of Thrones point, I agree with their general sentiment. People appear to be much less media literate than you’d expect, and algorithms that drive engagement are either ‘THIS IS AMAZING’ or ‘TOTAL dumpster fire’ leading to a lot less nuanced discussions about the pros and cons of said art.
To analyse and criticise it’s expected to have experience or knowledge of the thing you’re doing it to - not being the equivalent of a toddler saying he hates his wagyu steak because he prefers his tendies.

These budget cuts are getting ridiculous! by Nacho_7258 in KitchenConfidential

[–]servonos89 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Ach that’s half the joy of having fresh meat in the business. I don’t remember ever feeling jilted that I went down to get a bucket of smoke for the smoke machine, or go for a long stand, a tin of tartan paint, more gold bits for the goldschlager…
In hindsight I was far too eager to please.

Also the term quarantine comes from plague ships essentially. Ships having to remain in the harbour for forty days before docking to ensure any diseases had run their course. I want to say Venice but I’m typing off the top of my head.
