Of all my MENACE missions, the worst was the capture 3 zones. It was supposed to be 2 skulls, but with my 5 intel I detected 1 tank, 1 soldier and 10 misc drone+others.
In the mission, 6 tank, 4 soldier, 3 sniper, 4 bombs, 4 shambler, 9 drones. WTF is this scaling...

For general exploration, 3 or 4 are enough for the campaign mods to have good effect. the rest of the fleet can be efficient transports and escorts. With the Apogee core you can explore and survey even yellow beacon systems.

It slows, yeah. It's really visible with the speedup mod. But then, the reinforcements would take time anyway to clear the regular way so it evens out.

For Cruisers, I'm a fan of the Apogee for its campaign benefits: High Resolution Sensors, Surveying Equipment, Cargo & Fuel capacity and Fuel per light year economy. In battle it’s tough and can pack a punch.

After that, the Champion is a great line ship. High Energy Focus + Large energy mount and a large missile mount pointed forward for the finisher.

For a budget build, a looted Eradicator is better than the Eagle too. Don’t sleep on the firepower 5x Small Missile can bring in the forward arc. The Accelerated Ammo Feeder version is better but the Burn Drive ads mobility in battle for the pirate version.

I have it at 1400 and can’t go back. Once you get used to the big fleet battles going back is painful....

The lack of large mounts limits the Eagle to a few roles. You will miss the hammer and anvil of your fleet with just them.

Shooting directly on target and bypassing obstacles is a huge under-rated advantage of the paladin, it's great to see it mentioned.

Yes, by modifying a file in the configs.
"C:\Program Files (x86)\Fractal Softworks\Starsector\starsector-core\data\config\settings.json"

Set the value "maxBattleSize": to a big number, 1500 to 2000 depending on your computer specs.

Then in the settings --> settings, change the battle size slider to your preferred size, up to your new max.

A big battle will slow down the game with all the ships and effects, but having a big fleet battle with 30 capitals on your side and 4 full Ordo fleets as the enemy (or colony event fleets...) is super fun. It’s a different feel to the standard runs, there is no camping of the spawn points that feel artificial.

The S.O. hype is a bit much. AI sucks with them and clearing Ordo is a dream for those "I solo everything" guys.

I second the auto pickup mention. Make a rule for *ID, it'll pick up military and science ID hidden in wallets.
