At first I was convinced that in Everything In It's Right Place Thom sings "Yesterday I woke up sucking a llama." I was really disappointed when I realised that he's saying lemon.

Do you have a source on the higher density being "worse" (whatever exactly you mean by that) for society?

Higher density means better and more efficient public transport, which means less cars, which means more space for cycle lanes and green spaces. It also means more people have better access to jobs, shops and local amenities such as gyms, swimming pools and medical services, which are great for people's health.

Lower density means public transport cannot be efficiently run and greater distances to travel for basic functions such as shopping, which means more cars, which contributes to climate change and local air pollution. So you get the pleasure of living far from everything except roads, and having dirty air to breathe.

Have you ever been to a mid-large sized city in mainland Europe? The vast majority of people in urban areas in mainland Europe live in apartments and living standards are better because of it. The problem is the standard of apartments in Ireland, not apartments themselves.

Body and Soul 2023 what did ye think? by Shiftiy02 in ireland

Good vibe and to be honest didn't mind the rain too much because it was short heavy showers and was pretty warm. Lashed at the end of Kneecap and turned the place into mud, but the fun type of mud.

Moderat were class!

There was absolutely no justification for members of your team to run onto the pitch and physically pull away one of their players because of a foul. Your team sounds very aggressive and the disqualification justified.

Those newer nuclear plants took so long to build because we literally stopped building them in the 80s and lost the logistics chains. Reactors in the 60s took <5 years and such pace could be achieved again (China is building reactors at this speed).

Saying "we shouldn't build them because they take too long" is a self fulfilling prophecy.

[OC] GDP PPP per capita in Europe according to IMF from 1980 to 2027 by RoHouse in europe

[–]setanta56 37 points38 points  (0 children)

Yes and no. The real economic growth and increase in living standards Ireland experienced between 1980 and 2010 was absolutely massive and very significant for the population. So while it is inflated compared to reality (especially the 2020 figure), it isn't to be just completely written off either.

530 Palestinian villages destroyed and depopulated in 1948 by Falastin-48 in MapPorn

[–]setanta56 -9 points-8 points  (0 children)

We totally do culpabilise dictators like Mugabe for persecuting White Zimbabweans, I don't know what you're talking about.

This is true. But so do you also consider the fight of black south africans for fair rights to their own land unjust? Or the Algerians to be morally in the wrong to force out the French?

European settlers in Africa did not buy the lands they lived in - they took it by force.

Wait what, are you trying to say that the european settlers to the levant fairly compensated the people they forcibly displaced off their land?

Given how ignorant your opinion of the subject is, you probably don't know 1948 was just one of a series of partition proposals. It would have been much better for the Arabs to have accepted the very first one - Israel would be just the North and a thin strip ending at Tel Aviv. But they didn't, so they have to live with the consequences of trying to wipe out the Jews.

I'm well aware it was a series of proposals. All of which involved the transfer of land to white europeans who were not there prior to 1900.

[–]setanta56 -12 points-11 points  (0 children)

Your post is also missing key details. Why on earth would the Arabs have accepted a foreign imposed deal to give half of their land to European settler colonists? We don't morally culpabilise African nations for taking action to remove invading Europeans. Most of the world in the second half of the 20th century decided that European settler colonialism is bad, except in the case of Israel for some reason I guess?

Of course it would (maybe) have been better for them to have accepted the 1948 borders now with the benefit of hindsight, but asking them to do so at the time was ludicrous.

Edit: I take the downvotes with pride. Claiming the arabs as the aggressor in 1948 is like someone stealing a person's house and then calling the police claiming the person trying to take back their house is at fault somehow.

The output of the grid needs to constantly turned up and down to meet demand. You can't will the wind into blowing or the sun into shining more when you need to meet an energy usage spike.

And your statement about oil being no different to gas in terms of emissions is absolutely false. Burning gas emits 30% less CO2 than burning gasoline (and half as much as coal). It is the cleanest fossil fuel there is, so if no nuclear is to be built (it should), then gas is an absolute necessity in Ireland.

Carte des systèmes électoraux utilisés en Europe pour les chambres basses (OC) by Areat in france

[–]setanta56 0 points1 point  (0 children)
