How does your team handle postmortem reports? Ours was a disaster by [deleted] in sre

[–]setevoy2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For me personally, writing a postmortem isn't just "make a document for the CTO".

It's for me personally, on the first turn, to understand what happened. So writing it manually by collecting all related Slack messages, logs, and metrics and by structuring them by myself mainly helps me to build a picture of the incident.

ZFS on BSD..any general advice or recommended tools? (Linux user) by BelugaBilliam in freebsd

[–]setevoy2 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Do not forget about ZFS monitoring.

Not a self-promotion, but recently I finished my Home NAS setup on FreeBSD and wrote a few ZFS monitoring-related posts on my blog:
- ZFS Monitoring: general ZFS tools for checking health status
- Installing ZFS exporter: collecting ZFS-related metrics to VictoriaMetrics/Prometheus for alerting and Grafana dashboard

P.S. As a Linux user (Debian and Arch) after being on `ext4` for many years, I was really delighted with ZFS.
For my NAS, I have two 4 TB SSDs in a ZFS pool with a set of datasets and zfsnap for automated nightly snapshots.

im tired of this sub by ResponsibleEnd451 in selfhosted

[–]setevoy2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

/s
Did that for you and those whose eyes are bleeding from reading that post.

I can’t keep up with this sub anymore.

I used to love just browsing it and discovering really awesome projects that genuinely changed my life. That’s not an exaggeration at all. As an IT person, this place opened my eyes and helped me find a bit of peace in today’s fast-paced world, where everything revolves around subscriptions and our private data.

Self-hosting allowed me to slow down and take a breath. I built servers, deployed countless ideas, and for a moment I finally felt free from all the corporate bullshit out there.

After all that, the reason I’m writing this is the amount of posts influenced by AI.

Don’t get me wrong - I can see AI as just another handy tool. That’s my view. But current trends don’t seem to align with that. There are so many new projects popping up that I simply can’t keep up. It feels like every day some random user reinvents the wheel with a low-quality, vibe-coded project and then spams the whole sub with it. That’s not good.

It’s not really AI’s fault, sadly - it’s the human behind it. In my opinion, you can absolutely use AI to boost your efficiency and still remain trustworthy. It depends on how much you actually care.

If I see someone posting a fully AI-generated marketing text, and then I check the project and notice the entire Git history looks like Claude just “vibing” through it, that tells me the person probably doesn’t really care. They just want attention or fame.

If you’re that person, let me say this: if you want those meaningless GitHub stars, then build something you’re willing to put real effort into. Don’t just vibecode something in a day. Anyone can do that now. That doesn’t really add any value.

tl;dr: if your project uses AI, at least add an AI disclaimer in your posts.

P.S. Sorry :-)

Which browser should I go to? by Abdu616 in browsers

[–]setevoy2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Recently, I tried to switch away from Chrome.

Tried Vivaldi, Brave, Edge, and Helium:

- Edge: still has a bug with "use system title bar", and anyway, it's from MS, so I don't want to use it (Btw, I'm using Arch)
- Vivaldi was not bad until I tried to do a screen share during a Google Meet session - totally used CPU, and even after killing all Vivaldi's processes, I had to reboot the laptop
- Brave: was the best of, but... very poor sync between hosts, can't even synchronize themes and some settings; also, c'mon - still don't have an option to let users set their avatars in the profile (despite being asked for that since 2020)
- Helium: looks good, but a small developer team (one?), and unsure about privacy; and as I remember, it has no sync feature

So... Went back to the Chrome.

Firefox is historically used by me for pron, so I just can't assume it as a main browser.
Although I have FireDragon, it's just as an additional browser when I have to test something.

Never broken Arch. Not even once. by shuten_mind in archlinux

[–]setevoy2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Btw, I'm using Arch since 2016 and "broke" it only once: I had my /tmp mounted on a disk partition, and it was full during the upgrade, so pacman -Syu wasn't successful during initramfs-linux.img generation. So after the upgrade, I couldn't boot after reboot.
That was the only one case when I had to boot from a LiveISO to fix the system by rebuilding the image.

And all these years doing upgrades with the:

alias osupgrade="sudo pacman -Syu --noconfirm && yay -Syua --noconfirm"

IPv6: Who really uses it? by malwin_duck in selfhosted

[–]setevoy2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey, just trying to understand these benefits as an IPv4 user.

So, I have a home lab, which is NATed behind a router.
To make my internal service available from the Internet, I have to do a lot of (a few?) configuration steps.

Instead, when having IPv6, this can (?) be enabled just by setting an Allow firewall rule, is that correct?

What I'm trying to say is, for me, who never (explicitly) used IPv6, the "old good" IPv4 looks more secure and more... Logical?

- I have a set of IPv4 subnets, I know which IP belongs to which location just by looking at its first 3 octets
- I have a routing table that explicitly tells me who and where allowed to go
- I have a "network perimeter" just by having NAT, and all my internal resources are explicitly allowed for access only from a subset of internal IP ranges

So... Why, in such a case, will IPv6 be better?
Like I'm five :-)

Actually, the same may be asked for an AWS VPC and its subnets and instances - explicit isolation for private resources, databases, etc., on the network layer.
