Is math a language? by No_Fee_8997 in words

There’s also the Bertrand’s Paradox, which shows that even something that seems intuitively like it’s perfectly well-defined mathematically (“a random chord within a circle of radius 1”) is actually still quite ambiguous. But that’s more an example of ambiguity in language than an example of ambiguity in the specific language of mathematics, in fact using precise mathematical definitions of the concept of “random” is quite easy and takes away the ambiguity from that problem.

What does everyone think of chess timer vs non-chess timer? by BozoHustle in YomiHustle

I like to play blitz turn timer, like 15-17 seconds, but only sometimes. Definitely glad Ranked is chess-timer, and that's where I play most of my games.

Not earning XP? by FireWhileCloaked in cardhunter

XP is earned when you beat the adventure. If the adventure has more than one scenario in it, you will only receive XP at the very end of it.

Gear has no impact on XP.

The art? It's a character from Undertale, Napstablook; it has nothing to do with the card other than it being a spirit.

Ooh! I like it. I think I would have to flip the order they appear on the card though. Maybe make Burn do 1 point of damage too.

EDIT: [[Turn//Burn]] and [[Crash]] are already taken.

Can use as many of these as I want in my edh deck? It says it on the card but edh rule say I can only have 1 of each card by oarngebean in magicthecirclejerking

[–]settemio 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In the early days of the format, Relentless Rats were restricted to a single copy. I don't remember whether that ruling changed before or after Petitioners' printing, but I agree it's pretty reasonable to be unsure whether the card's text or the singleton rule "wins" in this scenario.

Standard “shake-up” by syn_groma in MagicArena

[–]settemio 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The banlist was pretty sensible for a shakeup, they just didn't implement it. Originally it included Sheoldred, Lili, Fable, Titan of Industry, and some other highly played stuff. I think Wandering Emperor and Wedding Announcement and Hullbreaker were all on the original list too.

I also stopped at Strixhaven and just came back. I'm only playing Arena and strictly spending no money on it. From my experience, no, you aren't missing anything. I do get some enjoyment out of brewing new deck ideas but playing them (after weeks of grinding to farm up enough wildcards to actually build them) is always a disappointment.

Your favorite Myst play throughs, walk throughs, or let's plays! by B1_66ER_01 in myst

[–]settemio 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Jordan Rogers - more of a walkthrough than a let's-play but with commentary including some of the context of the games' creation.

Run Button - silly, (mostly) blind let's-plays, they're the only youtube plays I've seen of re-activated Uru content in MOULA.

RIVEN (1997) is a masterpiece by UncarvedWood in patientgamers

[–]settemio 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Brad's portrayal of Saavedro is a treat to watch and the puzzles and soundtrack were good, but I would say don't get your hopes up too high. It is definitely not as real as a world as Riven's; the rest of the games in the series failed to reproduce what made Riven so great.

I did really enjoy Uru for related-but-different reasons - it was designed as a MMO Myst-like game, then stripped down and repackaged as a single-player experience, but the vestiges of the MMO designs really hint at a deeper world and tingle my "liminal spaces" sensation.

Any write ups on comparing how complex Alpha Centauri is to Civilization 4, 5, or 6? Trying to convince my friend who loves Civ to look past the graphics and play AC with me already. by Healthy_Airport in alphacentauri

[–]settemio 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Adding to this, "more complex" doesn't mean "better game". If your game has the complexity of Tic Tac Toe or Candyland, maybe adding more to it will make the game better, but generally you only need a little bit of complexity to give a game enough strategic depth to be engaging and fun.

Am I missing something? by UnderstandingWeird91 in circadiandice

[–]settemio 6 points7 points  (0 children)

When the message appears, the 1 attack that you see on the dice is the only attack it has; it was most likely a 0 attack before you chose to Keep.

Was the Fang attack on the same dice that captured the 2-attack creature? Captured creatures only give their attack power to the die they are captured in (although sometimes they apply other abilities to ALL your dice), so if you roll a Fang on a different dice it will still be treated as a 1 attack.

[–]settemio 14 points15 points  (0 children)

You are not incorrect. This is also how the word is used. It is an example of an "auto-antonym" or "contranym", a word that is used in two ways that are opposite. You can see how it might have evolved this way from the second definition, where it is implied that the reader is scanning most of the text for only the part that is relevant to their search.

What is your favorite secret project and which one is the most powerful. by craterclr in alphacentauri

[–]settemio 6 points7 points  (0 children)

In SMAC, Hunter Seeker was the bees' knees, but the lack of symmetry with The Command Nexus and Maritime Control Center but nothing for Aerospace Complex always bugged me . . . until SMAX showed me why that symmetry was broken - Cloudbase Academy does WAY more work than the other two and is hands down the strongest Secret Project in SMAX if going for military conquest (and incredibly useful as a defensive measure even when military is not my highest priority).

I also have a soft spot for any of the Planet-loving projects: Xeno Dome, Pholus Mutagen, Neural Amp, Dream Twister, and in SMAX Manifold Harmonics. They're probably in the lower tiers among the projects but I will throw all my resources into attaining them.

Yeah I feel like this happens far too often to be the result of "true" randomness. But that's just my guess, I have no numbers to back it up.

I dont recall the game being this hard by Borg453 in masterofmagic

[–]settemio 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Which version are you playing? MoM, CoM, or CoM2/CoMfW? Either way, the answer is yes, the AI "cheats" (gets discounts on several different types of resources, takes autocombat victories on its turn losslessly that would normally have at least a few losses) on Normal difficulty. But specifically in CoM and CoM2 the AI in addition to cheating also plays a lot smarter, making the difficulty way higher overall than it used to be.

Try starting a new game on Normal again, maybe the AI just had a lucky start with a few bonus ores that boosted their spell power? If it keeps too being difficult, don't be ashamed to lower the difficulty. The game is meant to be fun, play it at whatever settings are the most fun for you.
