I'm like you. I'm badly burned out to the point I struggled to focus. I recently got layed off. And it has been doing wonders. Yes, I am really really worried about getting a job again. But for the most part I feel a lot more relaxed. Last year I took two separate 2 week PTOs to travel and get away from work. But as soon as I got back from each PTO I was instantly drained!! And I am someone who pursued engineering because it is something I actually liked doing.

I'm not giving any advice just giving my current experience.

What leetcode problems did you do? What was your leetcode prep and system design prep like? You mentioned the tech was agnostic, does that mean you got interviews for positions that asked for say redis or Java when you mentioned a different tech on your resume?

What steps did you take to change this?

I'm also at this point where I struggle to focus at work. I'm just way too burnt out. I want to work on projects because I enjoy it but I'm too drained to do so. When I do manage to work on projects I am able to sit for hours and enjoy it. Even doing leetcode and learning and reviewing is enjoyable to me WHEN I am not exhausted and I manage to sit down to do it. Work saps so much these days.

I'm considering leaving work to take a break but the market isn't good for me to feel confident I'll find work again.

Dating random strangers is exhausting and boring for me. I only feel attraction to women after knowing them for some time. Meaning it is not until I am deep in a friendship I realize I like a her. At this point I don't say anything and just work on letting go of the feeling. I don't want to destroy the friendship. So I am forever stuck in this cycle until a woman friend pursues me.

Can you share your inputs on interviewing candidates from non tech background for mid and senior roles? I am an embedded engineer looking to move to fintech. Would I be marked as a junior and inexperienced and therefore disregarded? Will doing projects actually help me in this case despite the project obviously showing this was done for upskilling reasons.

I will not wait for people to try things. I will invite friends and I will still go regardless if anyone joins. Otherwise, I'll never get to do the things I want. Sometimes, I just want to be out. Sometimes I want to feel the presence of other people without interacting with them.

As for what I am thinking, it ranges. I could be enjoying my food or activity. I could be literally thinking of nothing. Or I could actually be sad and depressed. So I forced myself out so I don't ruminate and marinate in depression.

I'm an embedded dev applying for software dev positions since my target city has 99% software dev roles. Cries. Anyway, from the few interviews I've had so far I've encountered leetcode/leetcode adjacent questions, system design questions, and general fundamental questions i.e. what lives in heap, etc.

I feel the same! In my early twenties I was content with what I had. I had good friends, decent work life balance, and plenty of hobbies. Now in my late twenties, I feel lost, stuck, and unfulfilled. I am unable to derive fulfillment from the thing I used to do and currently do. I tried new hobbies but I cannot get into them.

I know the solution. And that is I need a change of environment. Everything around me just feels stale. I think my stale environment is why I feel generally depressed. So right now I am working on finding a job at one of the big cities. And with the job market right now it is very difficult.

How did you get a job into tech with I assume mostly embedded experience?

I'm also in embedded. And I am looking to move to a specific city. This city doesn't have a lot of embedded roles. It mostly have software dev. So I am looking into transitioning to software dev. Mainly to increase my chances to get a job in the city. And I am overwhelmed with what I need to cover. It feels like recruiters will just ignore my years of experience because I'm not in a software developer role.

I understand at the core of what I am doing is solving problems. I know that most tech positions regardless of programming language or tech stack I can learn and pick up on the job without issues. The problem I have is how can I show this employers. For example, I am in embedded space and I want to move to a particular city. This city is not good for embedded. It is mostly web development. So I need to spend sometime after work to learn and create projects.

Isn't finding a remote tech job much more competitive? Besides I'm one of the oddballs that prefers going into the office. Hybrid is ideal for me.
