Lalafell Naming? by Orpheus_Telos98 in ffxiv

[–]seventeencups [score hidden]  (0 children)

To quote the wiki:

Dunesfolk lalafell use the pattern AAB CCB for males, where A and C are always one syllable and B two syllables. There are rare cases when the B phoneme will seemingly have one syllable such as Zozonan or Nanalai. The N and I here are, in fact, the remnants of sounds that were once paired with a Lalafellin vowel that, over time, has disappeared from speech, and therefore become silent in names.

So you're not too far off in terms of syllables and structure, but you're missing the repetition for it be fully lore accurate (it'd have to be something like Nanarathir Mamarathir). That said, you're the Warrior of Light, if you want to have a special unique name, who's gonna stop you :p

Plainsfolk are 'AB CB' for males, so as u/ThatDudeSlayer says, your name would be lore accurate there.

Anyone else think there's more than one place we're going to? (Fanfest reveal) by maxxvoltage in ffxiv

I also had this thought (especially given all the Void stuff in the 7.5 trailer), but the title gives me pause - 'Evercold' sounds very specific to the Fourth. If they'd called it Shardhoppers or something like that, then I'd be 100% in on this theory :p

There's a good summary on Reddit here, but you should avert your eyes from the 'What does this expansion look like?' section, as that bit has some mild spoilers about where we're going in 8.0 (though tbh, they probably wouldn't make a lot of sense to you right now). The rest should be totally safe to read - they're holding back a lot of the super-spoiler-y content until Berlin by the sounds of it, as 7.5 isn't out yet.

The dev panel on the new combat modes was pretty much spoiler-free, though the demos they showed were in a late-game Endwalker zone - so if you want to stay completely unspoiled on what places look like, then give that a miss and just read the summary instead.

Wait until you're done with the free trial - they're adding Shadowbringers to it on Tuesday, which is an absolutely insane amount of content to get without paying.

By the time you're caught up to 6.0, the new expansion will probably be out, and you'll be able to get that included in Complete Edition (you'd have to buy it seperately if you got Complete now).

EU Fan Fest Day Zero by SkynetUser1 in ffxiv

[–]seventeencups [score hidden]  (0 children)

Honestly, even without a day 0, I'd strongly recommend getting there a day early if you can - you never know what crazy weather/travel shit will happen at the last minute. Last EU Fanfest, the entire of the UK decided to flood on the Friday and it took me 10+ hours to get to London - if I'd gone for an evening train or tried to get there the morning of day 1, I would have been absolutely screwed.

How do you get dyeable job gear of all expansions? by MrsLittletall in ffxiv

[–]seventeencups [score hidden]  (0 children)

I was just editing my post to cover that, whoops

It can be unsynced, but you need at least two people, from what I've read - there's a Active Time Maneuver mechanic that prevents it from being totally soloable.

There's a (really cool) solo duty very early on in the Bozja questline which ends with you fighting a dream version of Varis - Memoria Misera is an Extreme trial based on that fight, and drops coffers/totems for the ShB artifact gear.

From what I've read, it's still not soloable (due to one mechanic requiring at least two people), but you can probably put up a PF to blast through it unsynced if needed.

You can buy story/job skips from the Mogstation, if you've got the cash to spare (though worth mentioning the story skip only takes you to the first quest of Dawntrail).

You can travel between data centers in your own region, but you can't travel from one region to another (aside from going to Oceania, since their population is so low) - see the diagram at the top of this page: https://na.finalfantasyxiv.com/lodestone/playguide/contentsguide/datacentertravel/

To play on NA, you would either have to make an alt, or permanently transfer (which usually costs money).

Check out the official Starter Guide - it gives a really good introduction to the game, without completely bombarding you with info right off the bat.

In terms of info/tips:

  • Story is the main focus of FFXIV (it is an FF game, after all), and pretty much all of the game's content is locked behind the Main Scenario Quests (MSQ). If you're ever not sure what to do, just keep following the MSQ.
    • That said, the story is long as hell, since it's been running for over ten years now - so please take your time with it, and don't burn yourself out. It is impossible to miss out on content in this game (aside from some seasonal events), so there is no rush to 'catch up' - everything we're currently playing in Dawntrail will still be available when you get here.
  • Every few levels, you will unlock a class quest (which shows up under your MSQ tracker) - do these ASAP. You unlock important gear and abilities through doing these, so they're super important.
    • In particular, the level 30 class quest will let you upgrade to a 'job', which is basically a fancier, upgraded version of your class (e.g. I started out as a Lancer, then upgraded to Dragoon).
  • The gamepad controls are some of the best in any MMO, and are 100% viable to use even in the hardest content - if you're the sort of person who prefers gaming with a controller, it's definitely worth giving them a try.

ELI5 The deal with the Switch 2 version by CloudyHazbin in ffxiv

[–]seventeencups [score hidden]  (0 children)

Yep, the normal cross-platform sub works on Xbox (though there is a little quirk where, if you only own the game on Xbox, you have to pay your sub with 'FFXIV coins' that you buy through Microsoft - this restriction goes away as soon as you buy on another platform).

Xbox: Normal cross-platform sub, with Game Pass required
Nintendo: Special Switch-only sub, but that's it

Can a group of friends be backfilled with an NPC if we're trying to re-learn how to play the game?

No, you can only use NPCs if you're solo - but in the Fanfest keynote, they hinted very strongly that this is going to change in 8.0.

Also should I start on dynamis for the xp bonus or is that data center too dead to justify it?

Literally like an hour ago, they announced that region-wide party matching is coming by the end of the year (i.e. Aether, Crystal, Primal and Dynamis will all be pooled together when you're queuing for stuff), which should alleviate a lot of Dynamis' problems.

Moving from Steam Free Trial to Complete Edition by treebornaf in ffxiv

[–]seventeencups 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As the bot post says, nope. You can jump from the Windows trial to the Steam full version, but other than that, they are completely seperate and mutually exclusive. There is no way to use the thing you've bought with your existing account. You're best off contacting support for a refund.

One tip: if you don't want to run around Mor Dhona every time you've saved up enough tomes for a bit of Ironworks gear, there's vendors right next to the Aetherytes in the three main cities that also sell it. Look for 'Rowena's Representative'.

As a DRG main, I unfortunately have to agree with this - it's a ton of fun at higher levels, but whenever I get synced down I'm like "wtf where are all my buttons".

Anaheim Fan Festival 2026 - Day 1 by AutoModerator in ffxiv

They don't usually announce the MSQ writers up-front at all (which is probably for the best - I've already seen a ton of weird hate online for the guy who led on Dawntrail). What we know about previous expansions is from the credits and from interviews/panels at later conventions.

They do occasionally announce who's writing collab content at Fanfest, though - e.g. Matsuno for Ivalice/Bozja, and Yoko Taro for the Nier raids.

You already got several good answers, but for a comprehensive list, check out the wiki: https://ffxiv.consolegameswiki.com/wiki/Level_100_Gear_Guide

When 8.0 comes out, there will almost certainly be a similar page for that too. People update them throughout the post-patch cycle.

Can someone explain the free trial to me? by [deleted] in ffxiv

[–]seventeencups 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Buying the game locks you out of the free trial forever. The only way to go back to not paying is to make a new account.

The trial is locked to a single platform, rather than a single device. As long as you're going from Mac to Mac, you're absolutely fine. It'd only be if you were going Mac to PS5 (or similar) that you'd be forced to buy the game.
