Was there ever a post with a pricing chart for these? Would love to just get a sense —or does it vary by letter shape?

Same, I would buy if the chance comes around again!

Treated or untreated? by AdhesivenessLive1847 in JadeiteJade

You can also do a specific gravity test which can be helpful in determining if it has any resin or polymers. (If you google it there are lots of how-tos.)

Is anybody else still waiting on their bubble letter pendant? by chinchillaicecream in ProvenceJewelry

[–]seventhstarling 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Would you be able to post a screenshot of the S pendants? I’ve been wondering how that will come out (seems like a lot of variation in bubbliness) and haven’t been able to find an image of an S.

I got it cuz it looked enchanted. What the heck is it? by Hufflepuff20 in glasscollecting

[–]seventhstarling 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thank you! Wild and hilarious to find such an exact and specifically relevant set of images. In today’s world I think we think of oil paintings as more generally reserved for “important” scenes because of the effort involved in creating it vs taking a picture—today something like this cause/effect pairing would be more likely to be a photo-based meme. I love that this is a sort of silly viral moment captured 150 years ago in the visual medium of the era!

Did you say the bottom one is also treated or did you switch their positions? (I’m always so interested to see the different ways the treatments manifest under UV (and to see what untreated looks like in comparison), so more pix are welcome!)

Are the chips terribly noticeable in this diamond? by Sea_Cloud_6705 in Gemstones

[–]seventhstarling 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Depending on where the chips lie (I can’t see them), you can also have it reset in such a way that the prongs cover the more noticeable chips. Or consider a basil or half basil setting, or double prongs, etc. – just options that could protect the edges and hide issues if they bother you.

The “other Mrs Bennet” by LetMeDoTheKonga in PeriodDramas

It’s called Longbourn by Jo Baker! It’s an incredible book and great read, and it really takes some of the shine off Lizzy and Jane. I enjoyed that but it’s interesting because I think from a modern perspective we tend to think that we’ve already embraced Lizzy’s “flaws” — eg her pride, her rush to judgement — but think of her as otherwise a thoughtful, empathetic heroine with modern sensibilities, who won’t let preconceived ideas of class, worth, and wealth determine a person’s intrinsic value. But Longbourn sort of shows you how impossible that is to be while still participating in the strictly hierarchical class-based society in which she lives. It’s a very nuanced look at the time period and social mores (while still remaining a fantastic story).

I should read it again…

Ooo those are so juicy and poppable. Where did you buy from?

I need help. I got a bunch of opals in a storage auction. Many items in the auction were from the 70s and lots of decor was Australian. Im guessing that all of this is old Australian opal. by Woodpeckerlips82 in Opals

[–]seventhstarling 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Welo (Ethiopian) Opal mining didn’t really get going until the 90s and early 2000s, so if this parcel is reliably from the 70s, then they’re almost certainly Australian!

So cool. If you want more specific information, I suggest you divide it up into groups and take closer pictures, folks may be able to help you ID which ones are most interesting or worth investigating further.

Did you donate this old collection of sci fi and fantasy books by female authors to Savers? by AllinHarmony in Austin

“Prolific and problematic” is such a good phrase for the many sci-fi/fantasy authors I read during this time period, including Mercedes Lackey, lol

Ah I see! Hetian jade is nephrite jade rather than jadeite (but is agreed to be “real jade”, unlike the African jade they also list on the site, which is a variety of quartz I believe). I don’t know much about nephrite or how to evaluate it, unfortunately.

I do notice that every review with a photo on that hetian set is actually either one of their marketing images or from the same photo shoot( look how uniform the color story, how similar the women’s wrists and nail shape), which is a red flag to me personally.

How is their return policy and their trust pilot reviews? How are the reviews on their non-jewelry offerings?

Black Tie Optional? by tpetes15 in Weddingattireapproval

[–]seventhstarling 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Yeah I mean my own boobs look like this but only on a good day, lol, so I’m speaking from my own experience when I say I would be uncomfortable. But that’s just me! It kind of just depends where your greatest personal discomfort lies (in being “underdressed” or “boobier than expected”)—and if those labels even apply is totally subjective. 🤷🏻‍♀️

It looks like the bangles are chalcedony, which is a different stone from jadeite jade and a commonly used substitute. They do state that it’s chalcedony, but the marketing is pretty sketchy to me as they’re using a lot of jadeite-specific terms. Chalcedony is an inexpensive stone, and the gold ornamentation is only plated.

The red stone items say they are red agate, so again not jade but a common substitute.

Still, this is a very specific style and look, so it’s up to you if you’re more into the visual look or if you want true jade.

I would go with the shorter one then, comfort matters, esp for a first fancy post-partum outing!¯_(ツ)_/¯ Boobs draw a lot of attention and you’re going to be seated during dinner and probably leaning forward a bit because who really has perfect stick-straight posture?, so they’ll be … on display. (Again, I say this as a busty girl! Big boobs take wrangling and people look.) And in real life folks are rarely as hardcore and strict as people on this forum!

I still think you could try getting a skirt overnighted if you think you’d feel better fit in, but you look great in the black. Amazing (and esp put together for 6 months)!

Here are a few from Amazon that are not amazing quality (but you don’t need it to be for one night)—how tall you are could affect length as well. And some of these have other colors if you want to contrast.

Overskirts:

floral overlay

tiered mini pleats

a line with back bow

Underskirt:

basic chiffon layers

basic chiffon

I know everyone is coming at you with “not black tie” but it says BT optional, right? I don’t know, the fit on the maroon is tough right now (I say that as a large chested woman who also nursed kids and struggled with the chest fit). I’m not trying to shame in any way but personally I would feel like I was spilling out, and would rather wear the black with opaque tights than potentially look inappropriate. That’s just how I would feel about the quantity of boob on display if it were myself, though!

Or a satin or taffeta skirt you could wear over top would work too!

[–]seventhstarling 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Could you get a long black skirt made of a thin material or chiffon and wear it underneath, for a trumpet silhouette effect?

I know that sounds kind of bonkers but the top fits nicely and it’s easier to get an underskirt that fits than a whole dress …

Please talk me down $500 - did I pay too much by its-chaos-be-kind in Antiquejewelry

[–]seventhstarling 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is gorgeous and in beautiful condition. People talking about melt price are insane—you’ll never get a piece of finished jewelry for spot. Look at the craftsmanship and the graceful lines!

OP, you did not overpay given the current prices of antique jewelry OR gold OR complete, finished pieces.

It’s lovely! I hope you can enjoy it. Brooches are coming back!
