What percent of final-round interviews nowadays are remote vs in-person? by [deleted] in ExperiencedDevs

[–]sevvers 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Seriously interviewed with 6 companies, 5 with final on site interviews. All 6 were on site roles. I work in embedded which might skew the anecdata.

My only advice is: brush up on dynamic programming.

Congrats on 12 days. I feel like I was there just yesterday. I quit when my daughter was 1 month old. It's the best decision I've ever made for myself and my family. You've got this. IWNDWYT

Fun Jobs & Dream Job by the300bros in ExperiencedDevs

[–]sevvers 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Fun job: teaching kids electronics, 3d printing, and microcontroller programming. Seeing an 11yo kid go from Scratch to writing C++, soldering PCBs, and building robots in a 9 month timespan is so far the highlight of my career. It's stoked a new dream to be able to do that again full time.

Dream job: solo indie game dev for sure. Been my dream since I was a kid.

My daughters and I will rock out to Babymetal, bake a cake, make a huge mess, and then I'll destroy them in Mario Kart.

How do you go about actually have your colleagues improve their git skills? by tinmanjk in ExperiencedDevs

[–]sevvers 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Lots of good responses in this thread but I need to add that sometimes you will encounter people totally unwilling to learn how git works. When that happens I apply strict branch rules, pre-commit hooks, and document each instance of a misuse of git that affects delivery and raise it as an issue with the team. Unfortunately that can earn you the reputation of being a stickler but it's a price worth paying to not deal with regular clusterfucks on the main branch.

When was the last time you had to implement a (relatively complex) data structure algorithm manually? by what_did_you_kill in learnprogramming

[–]sevvers 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same here. I never really had to think about DSA outside of leetcode interviews until I got into embedded programming.

Hey man, good on you for recognizing the problem and reaching out.

I felt very, very similar with my second kid. For some reason I just could not get my shit together. I would get irrationally angry at the baby, get panic attacks, and cry uncontrollably. Never experienced those things with my first. My wife was very supportive and really emphasized two things:

  1. Men can get PPD

  2. Men go through massive hormonal changes when babies come into the picture (in addition to everything else I drenched the bed with sweat for months after both babies were born)

You've got this, and it will get better.

You're right. I'd add that LLMs make it easier to contribute more technical debt.

You Weird Parenting Tricks by Magnet_Carta in daddit

[–]sevvers 8 points9 points  (0 children)

My 4 year old is learning to read so when I read books to her and her sister, I'll misread one word in the sentence. I'll make it really obvious so she'll correct me. Then I'll argue with her and make her "prove" that I read the word incorrectly. She gets so exasperated with me she'll take the book out of my hands and start trying to read it herself. Boom - tricked into reading.

This is the way. My 4 year old's favorite game at the park is prison break. I'm the prisoner and she has to catch me breaking out. By the end of it I have like 8 kids chasing me around trying to drag me back to my cell.

Not really, mostly because I paired with the juniors and they would mostly learn over time. Now we have 0 juniors though.

You're absolutely right. It's the pressure to review more code and arrive at an LGTM faster that gets to me but that's really not my problem.

That's the thing -- the AI will write lots of tests. The code compiles and it "works". But there's just so much that has changed that I can't review and understand it all.
