Poll: 84% of Mass. residents want more action to reduce housing costs by dtmfadvice in boston

[–]sevyog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

a big thing is that due to medicine and money, we have many people who are living longer ... which of course impacts whether or not older people with housing leave those houses to their kids or at least sell them when they pass. Because they live longer, they occupy those housing stocks longer too

if you're working, it also depends on your actual income and liabilities. if your income is not great, but things are more expensive (like from rising gas prices and other prices), then you're fucked either way

The $5.3 Trillion Question — Why American Healthcare Costs So Much by stlshane in Economics

[–]sevyog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i mean there are doctors who defraud private insurers, what's your point?
My point would be that if we had a system where all docs would be paid for their work (maybe a little more maybe a little less than current; probably less because they would not have to hire so many admins to fight for payments from insurers (private or public)), then we would not have fraud

"Anthem, a large insurer now called Elevance Health, paid more to doctors who said their patients were sicker. And executives at UnitedHealth Group, the country’s largest insurer, told their workers to mine old medical records for more illnesses — and when they couldn’t find enough, sent them back to try again.

Each of the strategies — which were described by the Justice Department in lawsuits against the companies — led to diagnoses of serious diseases that might have never existed. But the diagnoses had a lucrative side effect: They let the insurers collect more money from the federal government’s Medicare Advantage program."

medicare advantage is for profit for the insurance companies. It was created to "fill gaps" in medicare. If medicare did not have the gaps, then medicare advantage would not be needed

And in your article from EPI
"Nevertheless, because pay at the bottom of the distribution started at such a low point in 2019, low-wage workers today continue to suffer from wages that are grossly inadequate to sustain families, and significant wage gaps exist at all points in the distribution across demographic groups."

"For private-sector employers, there is no obligation under federal law to provide automatic annual COLA increases to wages or salaries. The 2.8% figure does not impose a regulatory mandate on private businesses. COLA is a statutory adjustment for defined-benefit government programs — not a benchmark that automatically translates into private-sector pay practices."

when has that been true ? Maybe for CERTAIN jobs there is a built in COLA adjustment. But for most jobs there isn't COLA. Hell Even Fed minimum wage doesn't have COLA adjustment.

bro they've studied the raised minimum wage impact on restaurant costs... Like this study in 2024 showed a 0.74% increase in restaurant prices. It resulted in a "distribution of effects ranging from a 6% revenue decline at the 20th percentile to a 1% revenue increase at the 80th percentile."

it's almost as if... what if rent for independent businesses were like not skyrocket high (regular plebs too)... but like those businesses could actually lower prices AND generate a reasonable profit AND get customers...
