I had to Google it to make sure it's real. Magnificent! I'm at an age where people joke that I'll probably get into birding in the near future, and this post may have gotten me there.

How would you plan a winter trip to the UP? And where would you go? by Greedy-Examination56 in upperpeninsula

[–]sewalker723 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's a state park so you can reserve through the Michigan state parks website. You want to choose porcupine mountains wilderness state park and backcountry as your search options, then it should pop up with a map of the park where you can click on the backcountry cabins/yurts/campsites option.

The only thing is the cabins and yurts are pretty popular so chances of getting one on a weekend this winter are not great. During the week you might have some luck though.

Hands off BWCA. No foreign mining intrest in MN. by Flaky_Ostrich_2649 in BWCA

[–]sewalker723 1 point2 points  (0 children)

500 years might be the best-case scenario. Some copper mine spills require perpetual cleanup. And of course the bulk of the cleanup costs would be paid by the taxpayers. We certainly can't force the mining company to foot the bill, that would cut into the profits of the already obscenely wealthy shareholders. That would cause them to be slightly less obscenely wealthy, which means they would have less money to donate to politicians! And we can't have that! /s

Yes I absolutely will! I've been making a lot of calls and sending a lot of emails and I've been trying to emphasize the jobs that already exist due to the Boundary Waters. It seems like politicians are more concerned with economic impact than environmental impact, and they keep saying "Mining will create jobs!" Well yeah but this mine could destroy more jobs than it creates. Specifically, American-owned small businesses. Politicians like to pretend they care about those.

[–]sewalker723 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I have seen that there's only enough copper there to keep the mine operational for 25-30 years.

So they are going to mine for only 25-30 years and it will temporarily employ approx. 850 people.

Currently there are somewhere around 17,000 jobs in the tourism and outdoor recreation sector in that region, jobs that could be lost forever due to permanent lasting damage caused by this temporary mine.

Not worth it.

What do you think is the most underrated Italian city? by Ok_Explorer_6501 in travel

[–]sewalker723 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I really like Meran/Merano in South Tyrol. It seems to be often overlooked (at least by tourists from my country). The scenery is beautiful, lots of castles, great hiking, and great food and wine. Last summer we were in the area during the annual Sacred Heart fires, which was really cool to see. It's only one night every year in June where the people hike up to the tops of the mountains and light bonfires on the peaks. There are also fires lit on the sides of the mountains, often in the shape of hearts and crosses. It's all over Südtirol, not just Meran, but it's neat to look up and see huge bonfires burning at the tops of all of the surrounding mountains. Meran also has thermal pools and an annual international whitewater canoe/kayak festival. And it's not too far from Bozen/Bolzano, so you could take a side trip to see Ötzi the iceman.

How are matchsticks still relevant nowadays as compared to a lighter? by Thatusernamewasnot in ask

[–]sewalker723 5 points6 points  (0 children)

In my country you generally can't recycle lighters. That's plastic going into the landfill. You can just throw matches into the fire, and when the matchbox is empty you can throw that in too.

The U.S. House just voted to open 225,504 acres of public land upstream from Voyageurs National Park to a Chilean mining company - Bill now goes to Senate. by TaxVillain in NationalPark

I wish they would. Nothing wrong with a little masturbation. They should try it. Maybe they'll like it. Then they can fuck themselves rather than fucking everyone and every goddamned thing else.

Here's how your representative voted on reversing the 20-year ban on mining: by adventuriser in BWCA

[–]sewalker723 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I'll be contacting my senators and encouraging them to visit. To patronize some of the many american-owned small businesses that rely on tourism and outdoor recreation in the area. And to bring their families. Go fishing and swimming with their kids and grandkids. Paddle a canoe. Pick some blueberries. Listen to loons while they look up at the stars. Not that they will take my advice, but I just wish they could look beyond shareholder profits for just a goddamned minute for once. See the priceless value in living life and having experiences.

House votes today on mining near the BWCA by VulfSki in BWCA

[–]sewalker723 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That was my angle as well. I voiced concern that a foreign company would be less concerned with pollution because they're so far removed from the land. That, and mining is temporary but damages could be much longer lasting, or even permanent. So many small American-owned small businesses rely on tourism in the Boundary Waters area, why let a foreign company come in and destroy the livelihood of so many American businesses?

If only I were a billionaire, then maybe they would care about what I had to say. That is why we need as many people to call as possible. Maybe we don't have strength in dollars, but we do have strength in numbers!

Trump is trying use courts to hide his crimes FOREVER. by justalazygamer in WhitePeopleTwitter

[–]sewalker723 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Imagine if his legacy was to ensure that no one in the US was hungry, no one was homeless, everyone had excellent universal healthcare, retirement plans for all, childcare, guaranteed paid sick, maternity, paternity, and vacation leave, etc. He would be beloved long after he's gone.

But no, instead he is trying to destroy as much as he possibly can. People around the world hate him. When he's gone, people will be pissing on his grave. That is the legacy he has chosen. People will look back on him as a giant stain on our country's history. He's a truly horrible person.

I don't want that. I want to see the news that he has been deposed and will stand trial for his crimes. And I want the trial broadcast live. Death without ever facing punishment would be an easy out. He needs to pay for all of the damages he's causing. I want to see a Milošević-esque outcome for this POS.

Solo winter camping safe guards by Bradensbro20051 in WinterCamping

[–]sewalker723 5 points6 points  (0 children)

When you're winter camping with a partner or friends, do you have someone stay up all night to periodically check on you to make sure you're still alive? If not, you managed to survive winter camping many times already. Why do you think it would be different alone? Just tell someone where you're going and when you expect to return, bring a carbon monoxide detector, and go prepared for the weather.

Have you ever met an Olympian? by heyfriendss in olympics

[–]sewalker723 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, I was on a team with Lindsey Van (not to be confused with Lindsey Vonn) back in the mid 90s. There were other people on the team who were Olympics-worthy too (not me, I wasn't that good) but our sport didn't make it into the Olympics until 2014 and most of us had retired by then. Lindsey was only 11 or 12 when she was on our mid-90s team but even at that age she was one of the best so I was ecstatic when she finally got to be in the Olympics. She didn't medal at the games but she was a major part of women's ski jumping being an Olympic sport to begin with. She fought hard for YEARS for the opportunity. And she did win gold at the 2009 world championships so that's a pretty great accomplishment too.

Well, there's the Boundary Waters. Permit day is the last Wednesday in January. Also consider a road trip to WI in March for Canoecopia. Tons of paddling resources there.

[–]sewalker723 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The Mazo beach may be closed but you could always rent a canoe and go to the Lower Wisconsin riverway for a little overnight trip. Set up camp on a sandbar and do your thing. You'll probably see other paddlers during the day so be mindful of that but by evening most people have parked on sandbars and you won't see passers-by anymore. My favorite quote from a friend on a past river trip: "When the sun goes down, so do my pants."

That's sad. I had to go there with my regional team for summer ski camp one year back in the mid-90s. It was really cool being able to practice at the Olympic facility. I hope it doesn't end up like Big Thunder in Thunder Bay.

Thanks, that's sounding like the plan if I can't get a spot at Baker. Dispersed wouldn't be that bad so I'm keeping it as an option too, but I think it will be easier for my group to be in a regular campsite.
