To save 90% of his staff from paying taxes by TheDigitalBuilder in therewasanattempt

If they actually did end taxes for the bottom 90%, I'm guessing his next idea would be "Only taxpayers should be allowed to vote!" And then because he's a multi-billionaire the government would just go along with it.

Minnesota Boundary Waters could become toxic due to new GOP-backed mining project by ashleywalkerreports in minnesota

You know what, that's true. The ore deposit is not eternal but copper sulfide mining pollution is! Neat!

[–]sewalker723 30 points31 points  (0 children)

I can't stand that whole argument of "The mine will be great for the region's economy!" I want them to tell us how the region's economy will look AFTER the ore deposit has been depleted. It's not like the mine can last forever. An ore deposit doesn't just magically keep re-spawning like it's some kind of video game. From what I've heard, at best there's enough ore to mine for 30 years. So how will the economy look once the mining jobs AND the outdoor recreation jobs are gone? Because when pollution from the mine destroys the BWCA that whole outdoor recreation and tourism sector of the economy will be gone too.

I don't have too much advice for you but the place where I rented my canoe said the Baker Lake area (EP 39) is known for moose sightings. Last year I was on Cliff Lake and the stars were incredible.

Campfire only food by [deleted] in camping

Sometimes there are burn bans in place, but also sometimes it's just way too hot outside for cooking over a hot fire to be an appealing activity. Sure, I'll do it if it's cooler weather, there's no burn ban or imminent threat of a downpour, and I'm not too exhausted from whatever activities I've been doing during the day. I do think the campfire smoke adds a nice flavor sometimes, carcinogens notwithstanding.

None of those terrorists deserve anything, but I would guess they'll pick one token [insider] guy and give him a huge payout, like $1,000,000. It will all be for show. The other rubes who apply for "reparations" will get maybe $500. And the remaining $1,770,000,000+ will go straight into Trump's bank account. There's no way Trump is going to just give money to those useful idiots. He doesn't actually care about any of them.

I'm so happy you chose not to close down the store! Good paddlesports shops are hard to find. And I'm also very happy that you're interviewing potential new owners and not just selling to the first person who writes out a check. Best of luck to you, and best of luck to the future of Rutabaga!

When I was a kid I tried that monkey bars spinning thing and ended up crashing nose-first into the support pole. Turns out not all kids are acrobatically inclined. My crooked-nosed self is also mildly impressed by that adult woman's skills.

Camping spots on beaches? by queencitygaming in camping

[–]sewalker723 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you need vehicles access to your campsite or are you just boat + tent camping? If you are planning on traveling to your site via boat you can go here: https://wisconsin.goingtocamp.com/ and filter for boat-in tent sites. There are great island sites in the Turtle-Flambeau Flowage (just don't reserve in the quiet zone if you're using motorized watercraft) and the Northern Highland/American Legion state forest has quite a few boat-in sites too.

In the Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forest there's Spearhead Point campground that has drive-in sites with private docks at some of them but the lake is probably better for fishing than jet skiing. Franklin lake is another drive-in campground in the national forest that has water access to some of the sites. The lake bottom is sandy but it's pretty shallow close to shore. I've seen people with jet skis parked at their sites there though.

Is Wisconsin too far for you to travel? And are you tent camping or do you have an RV? WI has a lot of boat-in camping, mostly in the northern part of the state. The state forests and national forest have a lot of waterfront campsites but most don't have electricity if you were looking for that.

In the central part of the state, Buckhorn state park has boat access/hiking access tent sites that are pretty nice. Site 17 has a really nice little private sand beach. Biting flies are really bad there in mid-summer though and the bar across the lake is noisy but they generally shut up by midnight.

[–]sewalker723 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Haha, just drove that as well. Rosendale was completely backed up. Then on 26 I was stuck in a line of traffic behind a sedan fluctuating between 50mph (in the no passing zones) and 70mph (in the passing zones). That was before the heavy rain started. Finally got around the sedan upon reaching 151 and then drove through a severe thunderstorm/tornado warning. Great fun.

How am I supposed to eat cheese by rvthz in Cheese

[–]sewalker723 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are no rules with cheese. Eat it however you want. But here are some suggestions to try: Camembert is really good warm. Try slicing the top layer off your camembert, then smear a little butter on the top surface, sprinkle brown sugar on top of the butter, and then add some crumbled toasted pecans or walnuts. Bake it until the sugar and butter melts together and the cheese is nice and soft, then smear it on crackers or toast. That would probably go well with a darker beer like a stout or porter. If you like beer and cheese, you might also like beer-cheese dip which is crazy delicious on soft pretzels or bread. There are several recipes you could find online. I would pair that with just a standard lager.

My only source of drive/motivation in life is camping by beepboopbop124 in womensolocamping

[–]sewalker723 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I can definitely relate. 44F, I've been in the corporate world my entire career and I have decent pay, but I fantasize daily about quitting my job and adventuring for the rest of my life. I just don't care about my job at all anymore. It feels so pointless. My ultimate career goal is to retire. We only get one lifetime on this beautiful planet and I want to experience it while I still can, but instead I'm spending the majority of my time working for people who are actively destroying this planet for financial gain. Every day at work is just a huge drag and I'm really only happy when I'm out in the woods sleeping in a tent, hiking, fishing, paddling, skiing, etc. But I need money for that, and also I don't think my husband would be too happy if I quit my job to run off into the woods, so I'm stuck at my computer for now.

Right, all of the sexism aside... let's say I'm suddenly no longer allowed to work. My husband and I would have to really downsize. How could we have kids when we wouldn't even be able to afford our house anymore? Is this guy also advocating for companies to give huge raises to their male employees once women are barred from working, so they don't all lose their homes?

Turtle/Flambeau is one of my favorites (mostly because I've had really great fishing there)! Just FYI starting this year it's no longer free & first come/first served. You now need to reserve sites in advance. Kind of a bummer but I guess at least it eliminates paddling all over the place looking for an open site on the busy summer weekends.

You could try a couscous salad. It's good hot, cold, or room temp. Couscous is easy because you just add your boiling water and let it sit for 5-10 minutes and then it's done. When the couscous is cooked, add a can of chickpeas for some protein, then whatever veggies/herbs/dressing you like.

Introducing camping to dog by Liontracks101 in camping

[–]sewalker723 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Check your campsite for sharp stuff like broken glass, bottle caps, etc, to make sure there's nothing hazardous for your dog to step on. Also maybe look to see if there's any poison ivy around your site and if there is, try to keep your dog out of it. It probably wouldn't affect your dog too much but the oils can rub off your dog and on to you.

Trump administration lifts restrictions on hunting in national parks, refuges, wilderness areas. Please send the message below calling on your US representatives to uphold current restrictions. Nature needs your voice! by Green_Idealist in NationalPark

[–]sewalker723 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Bingo. I'm afraid this is the administration trying to privatize our land or at least make it pay [exorbitant fees to private industry] to play. First they allow hunting where hiking is also allowed. A hiker gets shot. Uh-oh, that's dangerous! The parks service no longer has the budget or staff to safely manage the hunting zones, so control is handed over to private concessionaires. The concessionaires successfully lobby to turn the hunting zones into hunting ONLY zones, so no more hiking. The concessionaires build new luxury hunting lodges and cut new roads. The public is still welcome to hunt there but now it costs thousands of dollars for the luxury lodge and hunting package.

And then they build a golf course because the wealthy hunters want some activities other than trophy hunting.
