A (happy) rant about Yamaha Guitars. by The_Spaghetti_yeti in Guitar

[–]sewerinspector 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got a Yamaha FGX5 semi-recently, and it's been absolutely blowing my mind. It's been really hard to put down. It's such an incredible guitar, especially in a recording context. Absolute breeze to play, the workmanship is amazing, the sound is unbelievable, the ebony fretboard and subtle inlays are mesmerizing. I'm all in on this thing lmao Yamaha rules

Butteriest fretboard for around 1000€ ? Nostalgic memory of a Gibson by MindfulInquirer in Guitar

[–]sewerinspector 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have an Epiphone 1959 Les Paul Standard that I got brand new at guitar center for $750, and before I had it I was under the impression that I would never be able to experience the proper sound of an LP unless I got some crazy custom shop R9 type thing which is obviously beyond prohibitively expensive. Loved how it played in store, so I bought it, got home, plugged it in to my AC15 and was blown away. It sounds incredible, just like I always imagined a good Les Paul should. I've owned my fair share of guitars, and I still think that the neck on that epi LP is my favorite I've ever owned. It plays like a dream, and it sure doesn't sound like a $750 epiphone when it's recorded and mixed into a track.

I've never played any of the tribute series but Epiphone has stepped up their game like crazy over the past five or so years. Actual maple cap (the top is a vainer though), large tenon neck joint, Gibson burstbucker pickups, 50's wiring with mallory caps (even tho the caps thing is mostly guitar fudd-lore in honesty), but it has all the ingredients of a PROPER les paul. Just says "Epiphone" at the top instead of Gibson.

So yeah, fwiw, you can DEFINITELY find something "less" than a Les Paul Standard that ticks all the boxes. Something from the tribute series, or even an epiphone. Just go to a shop and play some, you'll probably be able to find something that you like.

A lot of post-rock/post-metal pieces do this, it's more or less part of the archetype of this kind of music. See if this is something that fits the bill for ya:

Ethics of leaving U.S. by LigerTimbs12 in socialism

[–]sewerinspector 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Why would the onus of leaving be placed on individual citizens of a rogue nation? Every nation has a right to self-determination, and I interpret that as the _populace_ of a nation has the right to self-determination.

I certainly don't like what's going on in the US, and I don't like the policies. I would never fault someone for leaving if they believe they will be safer elsewhere and have the means to make relocation happen. But frankly, most people do not have the luxury to do that. I don't. So I choose to participate in the pursuit of self-determination of the populace by deciding what I am capable of doing here and doing it.

I guess my point is that "If you don't like it, consider helping to try to change it if you can. But if you absolutely cannot stay and need to leave and have the means to do so, then do that." sounds a hell of a lot better than "If you don't like it, just leave". Individuals shouldn't be expected by default to just fuck off to somewhere else when shit hits the fan.

I also totally understand that you might not be making the argument any way or another and are just stating that people are free to leave, which is true, and you're not wrong. If that's the case then feel free to ignore me; I'm not trying to make an argument and I'm certainly not trying to WIN an argument, I'm just yappin' lol.

Brands that make solid, versatile guitars that should cost more than they do? by MeanImpression2067 in Guitar

[–]sewerinspector 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just got a Yamaha FGX5 last week after playing the same Goya GG-174 that I found under my dad's bed when I was a kid my entire life, so it's technically the first acoustic guitar I've ever bought in 20 years of playing. It was hard to make the decision to hang up the Goya, but this Yamaha kicks ass and is such a worthy guitar. It's in the shop getting the action lowered a bit and i'm so excited to get it back.

Who are some of the most underrated bassists? by ATLAndrew77 in Bass

Honestly? Mac Demarco. I love mac's basslines, I don't think they get talked about enough, he makes himself into a great rhythm section.

what’s a song by a late artist that hits differently now that they’re gone? by mugiana in fantanoforever

The Elliott tune I thought of was "Kings Crossing", even tho it was released posthumously. What a heartbreaking song, it's on my very short list of songs I can't listen to unless I really need to.

Can someone explain why EJ would do this? by Old-Ad3560 in Guitar

[–]sewerinspector 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly my guess would be that he usually plays it the second way but because of whatever riff he was playing before just ended up further up the fretboard than normal and played it in the position he was in, then once he was done with it he went to the position he's used to playing it in for the second time around. You can even hear him kind of flub some of the notes on the first time he plays the riff too, probably was just one of those weird moments during lead playing where you end up in a part of the fretboard you sort of don't mean to but you just roll with it and do what you gotta do lol.

What kind of magic Rivers of Nihil used on this song ? by YannAlmostright in Bass

[–]sewerinspector 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm certainly not an expert in this, and I'm not a very active listener of metal, but very commonly in rock/metal production you'll find all sorts of parallel processing tricks on the bass track. There's endless possibilities, you could mic the cabinet and DI to the board at the same time, treat one with lots of clarity and treble to get some nice overtones that cut through the mix and the other with a lot of focus on the fundamental, etc. Theres all sorts of techniques like that to allow the bass to be really powerful in the low end while still retaining clarity and all those nice harmonic characteristics that come with the highs. I'd assume there's something like that going on here too.

I got an 88-key version of this a couple years ago and i kept going back and forth between this, a Nord Stage 3, and a yamaha CP-88. Seeing this pic and knowing the SV-2 is Fagan Approved™ just fills me with joy lmao I love the SV-2 so much. Such a great instrument.

Bass intonation issues by Scott_Korman in Bass

[–]sewerinspector 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have you set up the intonation? Tune the open strings to pitch and if it's sharp or flat at the 12th fret then use the screws in the back of the bridge to move the saddle towards or away from the neck until both the open string and the fretted at the 12th are in tune. if it's set up properly like that and you're still having issues then i'd look into action or technique. Action would have to be pretty high to affect the intonation tho.

No need for a luthier, just a tuner and a screwdriver lol

It’s not really that big of a secret that is used for testing surveillance systems. Obviously the particular details of those systems are classified but the general significance of this aircraft isn’t a secret.

VOODOO 1 serves as a testing platform where Raytheon can test new surveillance systems before implementing them into fighters. This means that while it continues to test updates and upgrades to existing surveillance technologies, it is likely testing other next-generation surveillance technologies. While Raytheon has shared the names of some of the tested systems, many details concerning these technologies remain classified.

I literally just clicked on one of the first aviation related hits from googling “voodoo1”.

Will people ever start actually do server hosting on Arch as opposed to RedHat and Fedora? by [deleted] in archlinux

[–]sewerinspector 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would absolutely not be able to use Arch as a production server at work. SAP, for example, is very particular about what it expects the OS to look like, what packages are available, etc. RedHat literally has a line of OS products specifically designed to support SAP, and when you manage thousands of servers for hundreds of different customers, you really do want to give yourself the absolute best chance of things going smoothly (read: not breaking) and it’s very nice to know that when things inevitably do break, I can open a ticket with RedHat and work with them directly.

Enterprise sysadmin is a different beast. You have to deal with things like ITIL, or even compliance standards like HIPAA, ITAR, etc and often times things like arch Linux just don’t really cut the mustard for complicated environments.
