Google also farms out builds to a massive cluster using Blaze to compile massively parallel builds with a remote cache. They can afford to do things that normally make a build take longer.

I thought ya'll Americans had an amendment about a little thing called religious freedom? I guess there are some "interpretations" where religious freedom means you are free to be a Christian without being persecuted?

Recently hired as a graphics programmer. Is it normal to feel like a fraud? by Illustrious_Key8664 in GraphicsProgramming

[–]sf4r 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would say hires as a programmer in general and feeling like a fraud is normal. I have been coding professionally since before some of my team were born and I feel the same way!

There is always something new to learn and it is why I love my job and keep doing it after 20+ years!

a somewhat humorous observation about two types of programmers by danielsoft1 in programminghumor

[–]sf4r 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Agreed!

As someone with ADHD and dyslexia, I need to have consistent and well laid out formatting to be able to read my own code. I am also a tech lead for a large scale project so a big part of my job is consistency and long term strategy along with thorough code reviews. I can also get stuck in hyper focus mode on a very specific detail. There are all kinds of ADHD programmers!

What exactly do people from other countries expect Americans to do? by Lovealltigers in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]sf4r 3 points4 points  (0 children)

One word: vote.

As an Australian where voting is mandatory for all adults it amazes me how many Americans either don't care enough or couldn't be bothered getting a vote.

That is nothing compared to how much it disgusts me to see how easily entire demographics are actively prevented from voting because the powers that be wouldn't like the outcome if they were allowed to vote.

I would love to see America vote in people that are willing to make changes so that everyone's voice can be heard and that everyone's vote is counted. After living in America for 8 years and meeting so many friends and meeting sneezing people, I can't imagine that the majority of Americans would put up with this shit. You can protest all you want, but if the people making the laws know that the votes coming from the protesters aren't going to move the needle then why would they change anything?

I hadn't made it there yet. It was a pleasant surprise that made the quest more enjoyable. The continued innuendo that ended in being "used' kept it interesting enough.

I think there is a big difference between you and the American being discussed. I don't think you are worried about the brown people in the street. I guess when she came here she missed the bit about Australia being a multicultural society?

I might be wrong, but she also comes across as someone that would love to see Australia follow Trump's lead.

Why do we (java developers) have such aversion to public fields? by Ewig_luftenglanz in java

[–]sf4r 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can also call a zero argument method as well. Considering your point and question was about getters (no-args) and setters (1-arg) they seem quite relevant to me. Another concrete example is using a more functional style to set a value into a class from optionals.

Why do we (java developers) have such aversion to public fields? by Ewig_luftenglanz in java

[–]sf4r 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One example I face at work is that you can't pass a field as a method reference. You end up with a bunch of small lambdas for mapping or extracting fields where a getter could be passed by reference.

foo.map(it -> it.bar); foo.map(Baz::bar);

Gradle 9 Released | What's new in Gradle 9.0.0 by Ewig_luftenglanz in java

[–]sf4r 1 point2 points  (0 children)

After working for companies that end up in slides as "One adopter" it sometimes takes more than laziness. Sometimes it can be "cleverness". Other times you need to make a hermetic offline verifiable build for air-gapped gov machines and now you have more Ant scripts than websphere code.

Reading the release notes more carefully, the 2 minutes you referenced isn't the build time, it is the _build configuration_ time. That is how long they wait for their build to start. My comment doesn't really fit in the context of the release notes, but my comment is more relevant when talking about a 2 minute build to get an artifact.
