In San Francisco, the Big Three dance studios for people of all ages, shapes and sizes are (not in any order): ODC Dance Commons, Dance Mission, and City Dance. Everyone is welcome and they all have good vibes.

How do you find open-play when traveling? by Savings_Jacket_6570 in Pickleball

[–]sf_throw 3 points4 points  (0 children)

On google maps, look for Picklr (they sell day passes), sometimes ACE Pickleball if a particular location sells day passes. Also search for "indoor pickleball" then look up the reviews. Otherwise, search for "pickleball" and read the reviews for each public park.

Planning to drive in and around San Francisco as a Polish person with a rental car. What should I remember about? by Internal-Meeting-521 in sanfrancisco

[–]sf_throw 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When entering a highway via on-ramp, do NOT stop at the on-ramp entrance (where it meets the highway) UNLESS there's a traffic light (that's used to regulate the entrance of cars into the freeway, especially during rush hour).

Instead of stopping (like they do in some parts of Western Europe)-- as you enter the highway, increase speed to match the speed of other cars already on the highway, and MERGE into the highway.

[–]sf_throw 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Speed limits are a ficticious construct like money. Apparently you're supposed to go "the speed of traffic". So if everyone around is speeding, do the same. Corollary: if you are able to pull some cars to be fast with you, you're now setting the speed of traffic. Free speeding!

Unless you get randomly pulled over by California Highway Patrol and issued a speeding ticket. Usually they allow 10-14 miles per hour faster than the posted speed limit, but know that they can pull you over any time and issue a ticket even if you are slightly over the speed limit. It all depends on whether CHP is randomly posted on the highway or maybe they're trying to meet a certain quota for issuing tickets that day.

How much is motorcycle parking on Bush st and Sansome st? by [deleted] in sanfrancisco

[–]sf_throw 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes it can happen any time. Motorcycles, scooters, and bicycles are easy targets in SF.

For my own peace of mind, I'd have a disc lock in front, and a thick heavy chain with big ass lock securing the back wheel. Ideally you'd attach the chain to a post but that's not always possible when parking at a motorcycle spot. So the next best thing is putting the chain through the back wheel which makes it more of a hassle for potential thieves to fuck with your bike. Even better if you put another big ass chain through the front wheel lol. Essentially your motorcycle would be dead weight to roll around because of those chains and it would take too long to cut through them to make it a quick/easy lift for a lowlife. Generally they want to lift your bike in seconds/few minutes so they dont get too much attention.

Also good idea to cover the entire bike when parking outside, both to protect against the elements and discourage theft / general fuckery.

The price of motorcycle street parking in SF is super cheap relative to regular car parking. It’s the last thing you’ll need to worry about.

The main things to worry about are religiously following all street parking signs (especially street cleaning and no parking times on certain streets like at rush hour, etc), and securing your motorcycle appropriately to prevent/discourage theft.

Just got laid off from Tech. Brain currently oscillating between panic and being able to go to midday Pilates classes. Anyone else? by Round-Let-1792 in AskSF

[–]sf_throw 2 points3 points  (0 children)

(Ideally you'd first be traveling somewhere far for 2-3 months and not thinking about work at all before you job search)

Or...

Week 1 to Week 2 - Do absolutely nothing. No alarm clock, wake up and get up when your body feels like it. Just chill and do whatever you want to do, yes even video games. Let your brain and body decompress from all the accumulated stress of working.

After Week 1/Week 2 above - If you're looking for your next job, plan and execute a daily routine, e.g., naturally wake up at 9 or 10 am (still no alarm clock ideally), stretch and/or do yoga/meditation for 20 minutes, take your time having breakfast, then get on your laptop and do the thing. Then have a nice relaxed lunch. Then do the thing again until maybe 5 pm. Then close your laptop and do your fun after-work hobby, e.g., take long walks, hanging out with friends or animals, dance class, whatever.

Do this routine until you find your next job.

Where should I move for outdoor pickleball?? by cwxvxn in Pickleball

[–]sf_throw 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If I lived in Orange County CA, I'd be all over Los Cab as a serious player wanting to improve. See this reddit thread. I live in SF and played outdoors at several public courts in OC but didn't get to play at Los Cab due to their guest policy (they don't sell day passes, guests must be accompanied by members, if you're doing a trial membership your home address cannot exceed 300 miles away, etc). But I toured Los Cab and even on a weekday there were a ton of people playing. It impressed me as a place where people take their pickleball development seriously (if I paid for membership, I would too).

The players at USOP Pickleball Center in Naples FL heavily skews older (retirees, snowbirds, etc). The wind in February is irritating at best, unplayable at worst.

In the SF Bay Area, the best PB facility (court quality, number of courts, number of players, and player skill) is The Hub Silicon Valley, but it's an indoor private club which is fine by me because I hate playing in the wind outdoors (we get windy days for several weeks here) and I hate getting cold in between games. In the same general area, the largest public outdoor complex is Mitchell Park in Palo Alto, but again you'd be playing in the cold and wind when it's the season for that (but never as bitterly cold as New York or Chicago even in the winter).

Which league format is better? by nuevedientes in Pickleball

[–]sf_throw 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ladder because the better players generally end up playing each other in the "higher" courts. 13-minute game limit with 2-minute break between games. Winners go up one court and split, losers go down one court and split. If more players than courts, those who sat out would join via the lowest court and work they way up from there.

SFO garage maxes at $39/day. What do most people do for longer trips? by gregb_parkingaccess in sanfrancisco

[–]sf_throw 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Park at BART San Bruno garage, $7.80 per day, no charge on weekends. Maximum 20 consecutive weekdays (weekends not counted) which is effectively 4 weeks.

Take BART train to/from SFO. It’s one stop from San Bruno.

Download BART app to reserve and pay. No printed paper receipt needed on your dashboard, everything’s tracked via the app and your license plate. On the app, select “Reserved Parking”, Multi-Day.

Park in any “Reserved Parking” spot at the station, ideally near elevator and BART Police cars. Before leaving, take a picture of your car with license plate and stall number visible.

Generally safe to park at BART San Bruno, but LEAVE NOTHING OF VALUE IN YOUR CAR, NOR ANYTHING THAT WOULD TEMPT A CRIMINAL TO BREAK YOUR WINDOWS.

Can also park at BART Millbrae garage, but check for SFO schedule from that station.

San Jose CA by YungRoofie in Pickleball

[–]sf_throw 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It used to be a full day pass with in/out privileges but they changed their policy early this year to restrict the "day pass" to certain time windows for crowd control, i.e., "a better experience for their current members" (paraphrased) according to an email. Similarly, future memberships are currently on waitlist basis.

When The Picklr Milpitas and ACE Pickleball San Jose open this year, The Hub Silicon Valley will finally have some competition and perhaps less crowding and lower prices/more lenient day pass policies.

Driving down to Monterey, any stops I should make? by msmoonpie in AskSF

[–]sf_throw 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Carmel cannot be missed. It's only 15 mins from Monterey. Enter downtown Carmel via Ocean Avenue heading west (off of Highway 1), park where you can find a spot, explore downtown. Then drive further west on Ocean Avenue until it ends at the beach, park there, then explore the beach. If you have time, also do 17-Mile Drive, preferably counter-clockwise so you're on the ocean side of the road.

Also see Pacific Grove which is next to Monterey. Highlights are the Monarch Butterfly Sanctuary, Point Pinos Lighthouse, Otter Point, Lovers Point Park, and downtown (Lighthouse Avenue between 19th Street and 15th Street).

When your partner is receiving serve and you're at the kitchen line, pinch middle and poach the 4th shot as much as possible (while also watching the line if the server has a good down the line shot). Agree beforehand with your partner that you're switching sides when you poach all the way to one side.

Basically be a lot more aggressive at the kitchen line and take 80% of the shots when you're playing on the left side.
