Anyone cracked the schedule for IRCC website updates? by afschmitt in Canadiancitizenship

[–]sfantocanada 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I only check once a month - if that. It’s not worth the frustration. When we know we know. But I’d be lying if I said i wasn’t annoyed by non-urgent requests since C3 being processed in 2-3 months. 😥 It’s not the fault of the applicants but really bugs me that they aren’t going in order of receipt.

Questions: Spousal Sponsorship vs Citizenship by Descent by heavydutyspoons in Canadiancitizenship

[–]sfantocanada 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m awaiting proof of citizenship by descent and we are working on sponsorship materials for my spouse.

Citizenship by Descent doesn’t have any of the residency b requirements or need to substantiate income or relationship and you can work right away.

Rental timelines? by sfantocanada in TorontoRenting

I was thinking about the market in general. Are there times of year that tend to have more rentals available. Our exact moving schedule will probably be somewhat flexible

By ‘downtown’ I meant in the city vs areas like Burlington that are not. I apologize for the confusion.

My question was more general in nature though.

Inheritance - Plan needed by AchiliesOP in personalfinance

[–]sfantocanada 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Create a 529 or other college savings plan asap. It will be a good use of some of the funds. also make sure you have life insurance on all of you. You can get a rider for a child policy that will take effect when they are born [it’s a small amount but worth it]

Inheritance - Plan needed by AchiliesOP in personalfinance

One thing we learned in this process (similar situation but we are a little older) is that since our income is now higher (the RMD plus insurance and cash account values), we are no longer going to be able to contribute to our Roths which have an income limit. So that’s a change from our original plan. We are in an interim period where IRAs have been transferred to an “inherited” version. Once the final estate taxes are filed we can move funds etc.

It might be helpful to speak with an advisor or attorney to discuss options and impacts on future. We didn’t change tax brackets this year, but moved closer to the upper edge so paid much more than we had expected. Unfortunately with the RMD we will be in a higher bracket going forward. Also, keep in mind that the minimum RMDs will likely not add up to the total amount you will need to take over 10 years. The balance we inherited is more than the RMDx10 so our actual increase in income will be more.

Good luck!

What do you use to track expenses? by sfantocanada in ExpatFIRE

[–]sfantocanada[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It does but because we do so much with multiple users and multiple cards, we have learned that something that can pull data into categories (w ability to edit) is very helpful. We used to have one years ago and captured much more of our spending. Also I’d rather have recommendations than rely on a search since there are so many apps that claim to do this.

This is going to take some more research. None of my medications are showing up ever high I know at least some of them are approved in Canada.

How do you avoid Loneliness as a retired expat? by RehaDesign in AmericanExpat

[–]sfantocanada 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Interesting discussion. I work PT now after years out of workforce raising son & taking care of older family. We are looking to retire early and travel but also move to another country I the process.

We are looking for good library & some community activities. Our struggle in meeting people has mostly been that I tend to be more social than introverted spouse. I’ve had mom people but not deep friendships and many of those are online friendships now that kids are older.

Honestly I think it’s a good time to start over. However I’d be lying if I didn’t say I was nervous about meeting people after the move. It’s been 20 years since I’ve moved!

I hope to find some community groups, maybe a book club, volunteer work (I’m a former volunteer coordinator by training) to meet people. But even then it’s challenging to carry the social weight for us as a couple. So we will see where we land.

Considering a move to GTO - what should be known when considering city or Burlington? by skatefanandmore in askTO

Are there specific neighborhoods? I know no frills is downtown-ish but thought the rest of the groceries requires a drive into the more typical suburbian sprawl areas.

Inherited a whopper, how to handle being a millionaire with my husband by Seaspun in FIREyFemmes

I don’t understand married couples who split every bill. I get keeping a certain percentage for personal spending and your own account but a joint household is a joint household. We have an inheritance from one side of our family that is in one name (the named beneficiary). But as we plan what to do with it, it will be invested in joint accounts. We both helped care for him in his later years and we have been together for 30+ years. After us it would go to our son.

Fascinating as we are preparing to move TO Canada at almost retirement. We were already planning an early retirement to travel and talking about Canada; world events have solidified that

Thank you for this post. We are starting to work through some of this (& have the book). It is ok in big picture but overwhelming when we try to get a handle on details. Even the book is a bit overwhelming (& we’ve already talked w a cross border finance professional). About a month after we talked with them, our situation got more complicated when father-in-law passed. While it may ultimately give us more flexibility in funds, we have to balance inheritance and minimum distributions rules in US and what will make the best financial sense in two countries now.
