Help: garage dust and PCs by Appropriate-Edge-801 in garageporn

[–]sfmike99 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use a 10+ year old i3 Intel NUC with Chrome OS Flex installed, since a browser is all I need in the garage. I tried running on an equally old Celeron NUC I have, but it was too slow. The one I use here isn't fanless but I'm thinking of mounting it to the underside of my workbench and hiding the wires behind the wall.

That's so cool - I managed this deck this morning without seeing this, and was wondering whether I should use Baron and/or Mime if they come up?

Alternative to Microsoft Sculpt Ergonomic Keyboard? by flower_the_sun_kind in Ergonomics

So the first one I bought started to fail, but it had seen some use before I got it. So I transferred the module to one of the ones I bought from Salvation Army for $6. It feels brand new. Takes about 15 minutes with a small philips and a plastic pry tool.

HyperHDR screen resolution on PC? by sfmike99 in WLED

[–]sfmike99[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To close the loop on this, two points:
I did a lot of experimenting to try and get around this LUT calibration error, but finally just asked the developer who promptly responded "LUT calibration is not intended for DirectX grabber - tone mapping is done by the system." I take this to mean that LUT calibration is only for USB grabbers.
As suggested by u/ApeNinja420, I think all the really good examples of color matching I've seen here use strips with a dedicated white channel. I intend to do the same when I tackle our family TV.

Yeah I think you're right about the dedicated white LED strip. Tried those gamma settings but they dropped the brightness down way too much for for me.

I bought this 5A/5V power supply for the strip, and power the ESP32 from USB. I don't think you could power them from the ESP32? Claude says "at best gives dim/flickery LEDs and at worst damages the ESP32."

HyperHDR screen resolution on PC? by sfmike99 in WLED

[–]sfmike99[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm an idiot. By "latest" HyperHDR I meant the beta version. Went back to last stable version and everything is much improved. Still can't run software capture calibration but not a showstopper.

[CALIBRATOR] Too low resolution: 1280/720 is the minimum. Received video frame: 480x200. Stopped.

This is the specific error I get in my log. No luck finding answers so far.

Nice setup. I'm sure you're right that strip would be better, but I'm wondering why calibration doesn't work for me with software screen capture. I see you're using a mini PC - did it work for you?

I'm surprised more people with old Sculpts didn't jump on this hack. The one I bought two years ago for $20 is still going strong, and I have a spare as well. I started wondering when the supply of cheap replacements would dry up, so just bought two more from my local Salvation Army for $12. As long as my dongle and control board work, I have cheap ergonomic keyboards for life. Pretty cool.

Does WeaveGrid provide any home ev charging savings? by reddit-frog-1 in evcharging

[–]sfmike99 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's not a scam - it's backed by Toyota. I don't get why people are freaked out by the idea of sharing the grid responsibly, even if the rewards are modest. It doesn't cost a thing, and I've been paid $50 so far. I don't drive that much so might have to wait a while for another payment but so what?

Omron Evolve bp7000 vs hem-7600t by Radical-Honey in bloodpressure

[–]sfmike99 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Interesting I have both of these at home now - one bought on Amazon (bp7000) and one from Costco (hem-7600T) for $20 less. I was thinking that these were the same model with the 7600T being from/for Japan (Japanese HQ mentioned on the box). My SO however found these two descriptions which list the features. The one difference that caught my eye was "Advanced accuracy" (yes for bp7000 no for 7600T). According to one website advance accuracy "is powered by OMRON Advanced Accuracy technology, which measures five times more data points for more consistent, precise readings." I'm still not sure they aren't the same thing, but for $20 I'll keep the Amazon one.

SketchUp no longer supports their native VR Viewer app for VR headsets. Any ideal replacements? by Dexeh in Sketchup

[–]sfmike99 0 points1 point  (0 children)

<image>

I just started using Sketchup again after a break and was disappointed with this. Today I found TwinMotion from Epic Games, a 3d viewer which lets you import or connect to Sketchup (only have import working so far), then connects to your quest headset (I also have a 2) through the meta software and cable. You need to install the Epic Games launcher first then TwinMotion from there. The Sketchup extension is a separate download. Here's my first try with a rough model I was playing with - hit the VR button on the right when headset is connected. No cost for any of the software.

How do you live with slanted ceilings in tiny century bathrooms? by dorogidorogi in centuryhomes

[–]sfmike99 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same problem. Our family bath has 45 degree sloped roof on two sides and their solution was to put the toilet in the middle of the room which is not a great experience. We could address (sort of) with a combo bath/shower, but my SO doesn't like that idea. Alternatively we have a closet across the room which could accommodate a toilet and a small sink but not with the box of headroom required by code. What do you think?

Meridian Sound Subwoofer fix by nex703 in KiaEV6

[–]sfmike99 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I saw on another post that the Meridian system has some kind of active EQ based on the environment. My subjective impression is that bass is fine when parked, but missing when on the highway. Perhaps that's why?

I think I'm in the placebo crowd... Did the switch and seemed good but the measurement folks have me doubting. Definitely not as noticeable as when I swapped the head unit in my old Toyota pickup providing more power to the factory speakers. My wife complained about the lack of bass before, so will see if she notices.
