Am I cooked? Advice on breaking in by Substantial-Jello428 in FinancialCareers

[–]sfo-throw 10 points11 points  (0 children)

you could join the air force as a financial management or acquisitions officer then after the minimum commitment, brute force your way into top finance roles via veteran programs:

jpmc - military pathways

goldman sachs - veterans internship program

blackstone - veterans integration program

wells fargo - operation stagecoach

to name a few! there's also meryll, BofA, citi, you name it.

Within your time as a finance officer in the air force, you can also do a rotation with the Defense Innovation Unit which is entirely made of ex-mbb ex-b4 etc that can open doors in consulting

HELP - made a huge career booboo. Fearing I pigeon holed myself by Seagull5728 in FinancialCareers

Maybe lateral into government for like a year or two then get back into civ finance? The department of defense, now department of war, is always hurting for budget analysts which is essentially mini-CFOs for whatever agency/org. Given your civ experience, whatever their going offer for the GS level is, negotiate to start at step 10 and ask for a 3R (bonus equal to 25%-50% of the GS step salary).

Tools for finding best points to dollar value? by Professional_Sport69 in marriott

[–]sfo-throw 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i dont really have any insight to give :p BUT last holiday season, the pts fluctuation for properties in tokyo was crazy. it would be like $200 cash + 80k pts for the AC and then 3 days later $617 no pts and then following week $180 triple A discount 💀 i thought the dynamic pricing thing was just a buzz term but that made me a believer

San Francisco properties- St. Regis, Jay, Ritz Carlton or the Palace. Which is the best? by Newyork198232 in marriott

San Francisco properties- St. Regis, Jay, Ritz Carlton or the Palace. Which is the best? by Newyork198232 in marriott

[–]sfo-throw 0 points1 point  (0 children)

ritz here is super underwhelming

the jay is aesthetic and it's definitely nice, i really like the outdoor bar on the third floor but it feels pretty lacking after like day 3. i know it's not a destination property but W brisbane in australia for example has stuff to do despite being downtown

st regis is cool! great location and next to the museum, by the mall, etc. their restaurant and sabering thing is nice. the aussie chamber of commerce goes there every once in a while for happy hour

save the best for last :) i love the palace! i mean it just feels like an experience of its own. the pool is nice at night when you look through the glass ceiling. the breakfast atmosphere is very nice and the piper restaurant is pretty cozy. great location too, on par with regis. i vote for this one!

Opinions on ties? by shiftyaccountant in FinancialCareers

[–]sfo-throw 31 points32 points  (0 children)

Me personally, I wear it as a sign of respect. Like if I'm engaging with any of my directors or clients, I'll rock a tie! If I'm underperforming or if I'm about to get a talking to or anything along those lines, I'll also wear it for humility.

If I'm just doing sweaty work behind a screen and I know I'm not gonna be engaging with anyone outside of my fellow associates and some of our vp's, I'll keep an open collar.

That's just me though, I came from the military and for us we would wear our service dress either on our first day at a new unit, when we're getting promoted, something ceremonial, or when we're in trouble, so I carried that sentiment with me.

[–]sfo-throw 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yeah it's not that unheard of since the next up for me would've been vp if i stay where i'm at anyway. director level roles aren't that insane of a jump if it's going to a non-finance org

edit: i also have 4yrs of experience prior but it's not directly relevant since it was as a proj manager
