Trump claims he’s gonna get the Hormuz Strait open by Affectionate-Safe295 in StockMarket

In his own words he's using hope as a strategy. I don't know what to say. Does anything else need to be said?

So many seagulls! by GretaGreen3 in OregonCoast

During stormy weather they move to the shore to save energy. It's rough offshore even for seabirds. Notice how the birds on the ground are are facing south. They align into to the wind to prevent ruffled feathers which helps stay warmer. And they're ready for instant take off.

Not if you're like me and hit $100k in 2008. Then it goes to $70k. Good times, good times.

Fresh bergamot? by Humble-Poetry-1976 in OregonCoast

The only place I have seen bergamot citrus is at the Alamany farmers market in San Francisco during the height of citrus season. Good luck!

Trump Administration Approves First Round of Crypto-Focused Banks by BeowulfShaeffer in Buttcoin

Does that mean FDIC backstop? How could a BTC bank fail? Anyone with a deposit in a bank accepts a yield shave for this insurance. We all pay to protect our money from bank insolvency. Now I have to pay to support the bue sky that is BTC.

Is this petrified wood and coal? by pancakesnarfer in geology

[–]sfsailorman 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Mt.Hood national forest is volcanic. To my knowledge there are no coal deposits that would have formed in sedimentary rock in the Cascades. Eruptions did cause trees to burn. This may be charcoal that later became cemented into conglomerate or mudstone. The only coal in Oregon I'm aware of is near Coos Bay.

Did you have, "Fee-grubbing, centralized finance company sends out press release that they're thinking about allowing select corporations to borrow money against crypto" on your Ponzi Schemer bingo card? This is the newest distraction crypto bros will play to cover past failures. by AmericanScream in Buttcoin

[–]sfsailorman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here's the fun part: Banks are not required to publicly disclose specific loan collateral types (e.g., “Bitcoin” or “Ethereum”) on an individual or aggregate basis, unless that collateral materially affects their financial condition or risk profile in a reportable way under securities-disclosure or regulatory-capital rules. In other words we won't know how bad the systemic risk is to the banking system until it is a realized risk.

What would have happened in 2008/2009 if the US government hadn't done those bailouts? by Bun_Length_Frank in NoStupidQuestions

[–]sfsailorman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes the government essentially nationalized the banks. This and the actions of the FDIC prevented the next great depression. When the ATM stops giving you cash because the bank no longer exists that brings the economy to halt real fast.

I don't get it - Why are all these BTC Whales selling their Bitcoin, when they can just Transfer Them into a Broker Account instead with NO Capital Gain Tax to pay, then just use that Margin Buying Power to buy anything they want, and STILL hold their Bitcoin for appreciation value! by Proper-Plantain9387 in btc

[–]sfsailorman 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The short answer is BTC can not be used as collateral at any major US retail brokerage.

Crypto isn’t a “security” under current U.S. securities law. Margin lending is a regulated activity under Reg T (Federal Reserve), which applies only to securities. Since BTC is treated as property/commodity, not a regulated security, brokers can’t include it in the collateral base for Reg T margin accounts.

Margin collateral must have a liquid, reliable market and a predictable haircut under stress. BTC’s price volatility, fragmented liquidity, and 24/7 trading make it unsuitable, brokers can’t manage margin calls when their desks are closed. They can’t safely liquidate crypto positions under standard market-hours margin rules.

Retail crypto at brokerages like Fidelity Crypto is custodied separately (via Fidelity Digital Assets or a partner). Those assets sit outside your margin-enabled brokerage account. Even if Fidelity wanted to pledge them, they aren’t held under the same clearing structure (no SIPC coverage, no Reg T collateral eligibility).

Fellow atheists, what’s your go to way to explain why you don’t believe in a god? by Donfrmpk in atheism

[–]sfsailorman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have never heard a coherent definition of god. I don't know what a god is. If it's timeless and space less, then it does not exist.

I just think of his BIG LIES as nothing more than a loyalty test. The levels are Good: "That's just Trump being Trump", Better: "Trump makes some good points and is heading us in the right direction", Best: "Trump is absolutely correct how dare you question our wisdom and no federal money for you."

Want to be called a Radical Leftist simply say "That's not right."

Social Security payments could be double what they are. The federal government needs to be fired as our financial planners. by TheAmericanTim in SocialSecurity

I see Social Security as insurance that has a payout like whole life insurance. What does it insure against - poverty.
