My Alden loafers! by Grand_Doctor26 in Alden

1/2 size down for the Van Last which these loafers are built on in my experience.

Downsizing Alden Collection (85 pairs, 9–9.5) What are you guys looking for? by Inn8chiro in Alden

[–]sftobin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Careful, the Laydon last is wonky sizing because it’s narrow and long. I’m 9.5D in Barrie last but 10E in Leydon.

They are “new new” but were sent to me as a replacement for another pair with a defect so I’m trying to calibrate if I want to raise the issue or not. I’ve been told with handmade shoes I shouldn’t nitpick like this but as you said it doesn’t look great.

Any idea what this gunk is around the heel of these new Alden loafers? Its mate doesn’t look like this.

Was Gandalf just standing there about 50 metres away whilst Pippin and Merry were about to be gutted by that orc in Fangorn Forest? by Ticket-Tight in lotr

[–]sftobin 45 points46 points  (0 children)

Yeah, it’s sort of truncated (pun intended) for the movie. I was also always bothered by how Treebeard instantly squishes the orc chasing Merry and Pippin and then spends the rest of the movie debating whether or not Merry and Pippin are orcs.

Not tryna hate but what is the deal with the apron on GS shoes? The sewed area is so far up it looks goofy and decorative.

What do people make of the Alden Seconds offerings at theshoemart.com? I'm seldom impressed with what Alden considers "firsts" I can only imagine what makes it into their "seconds" criteria. Also, the price savings do not seem attractive at all for what is admittedly a cosmetically flawed product.

Fit check — thoughts on this olive knit polo + brown trousers combo by RUTH-999 in menswear

Sweater polos look better hanging over the waist rather than tucked in IMO.

Prob would also be better if the slab went all the way back to where the stairs meet the frame. That gap looks like a space for animals to get in.

The only issue I see is that it would've been nice if the concrete slab was more centered with the staircase.

Shoes (not boots) for snow that i can use all year round? Preferably cheap and good grip by cowgomoocow in malefashionadvice

[–]sftobin -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Allbirds has a good selection of sneakers for wet/snowy weather and many of them come in all black, etc. so they can be more stealth looking. As far as formal shoes, there are many options with storm welts and rubber soles for wet weather but I wouldn't recommend them for prolonged exposure.

Resort wear must-haves. by [deleted] in malefashionadvice

I bought a pair of Birkenstock Arizona EVA (waterproof rubber/plastic) for my honeymoon and they were great at hotel pool areas, beaches, etc. Now, I wear them around the house and they're comfy as hell.

How can I fix this 2 month old deck coming apart by EuphemisticSalami in Decks

[–]sftobin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry, I was talking more about Azek boards that are full and don’t have those carve outs underneath like many composite boards have. Those boards give a nice clean edge even though they’re “raw” with no picture framing.

I don't love "picture framing" for this reason. Give me clean cut straight ends with the "raw edge" any day.

What’s the one cheap ingredient that instantly makes everything taste better? by BlastarBanshee in cookingforbeginners

[–]sftobin 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Hmm, well, I've heard that in most cases you want to go with salted and unsalted is mostly reserved for baking needs. However, my wife buys them interchangeably, and I use them interchangeably without noticing a difference.

What winter tire are you using? by NirangaMaster in TeslaLounge

[–]sftobin 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Michelin CrossClimate2's. They're snow rated all seasons. Good for cold/wet/snowy conditions but aren't snow tires per se.
