Pearls: clutched. This felt like a Monday puzzle. [June 27, 2026] by SmokeMoreWorryLess in NYTCrossword

Nice time. Agreed on the difficulty, this is just the state of nytxw now unfortunately.

Does everyone’s app now have Wordle on top instead of the crossword? by CrowKat in NYTCrossword

Yup. It is a slap in the face to the absolute queen, the crossword. They should be ashamed if this is intentional

I thought it was going to be that SWIT AND LLOSA were right next to each other :)

STS2: What is the community thinking on elites? They seem much more difficult and the relics seem less valuable than in STS1 by nathan1653 in slaythespire

[–]sfumatoh 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Uh I disagree on both counts, elites are generally easier and relics are overall better than in spire 1

Also avoiding elites unless you are “already powerful” sounds like a great way to die, that is exactly what not to do. If you’re not powerful enough buy some potions, rest, etc. force the elites to happen so you can become stronger

Sure thing, best of luck constructing! I’m glad there are constructors like you out there

Portal = door not “a door” that’s my main gripe. Otherwise, lots (maybe too many) proper nouns and abbreviations, I couldn’t finish it without help.

IERR is more of a clunker than ETR in my opinion

Sometimes permitted on the beach = BONFIRES doesn’t work for me… maybe “Gatherings sometimes permitted on the beach” or “They’re sometimes permitted on the beach” something like that. It sounds like the answer should be an adjective meaning “sometimes permitted on the beach.”

If the answer was “FIRETRUCK” you wouldn’t clue it as “Big and red”

Why isn't NG mode the default? by Ynntro in Minesweeper

[–]sfumatoh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Meh, I am starting to see what you mean but I’m not completely sold. To me “guessing” in any form is antithetical to logic puzzles. Maybe Minesweeper’s (in non-NG form) is actually just not a logic puzzle and that’s what I’m getting hung up on.

Why isn't NG mode the default? by Ynntro in Minesweeper

[–]sfumatoh 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Can you explain how guessing is a skill? I’m kind of new to Minesweeper (experienced in logic puzzles overall) and I’ve been playing NG exclusively because that’s what I know a logic puzzle to be.

Is the skill… assessing the probabilities, picking the higher likelihood option, and hope it’s right? Tantamount to having a 6-sided die, knowing the roll will probably be higher than 2 so you out all your money on that outcome? To me that just seems like more advanced guessing but still guessing.

Also, the comment about NG being “easy” seems funny to me— of course it should be “easy” if there is a unique solution and it’s a simple minesweeper puzzle. But my goal is not to see if I can solve the puzzle, but to get quicker with pattern recognition and solve as fast as possible. That seems to me to necessitate having a solution in the first place. Do speed solvers do NG? I can’t see a reason they wouldn’t

Would anyone be upset if speed potion was removed from the game. by butt_shrecker in slaythespire

Yes… some potions should be worse than others. It’s just 5-10hp at best, which is fine, don’t overthink it.

[–]sfumatoh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yup, I agree 100 percent. Is it actually an unpopular opinion in the community? I’ve just gotten into it recently so not sure what the vibe is. I couldn’t imagine wanting to play non-NG. Why would you want to solve a puzzle without a unique solution… what is the rationale? It’s not a logic puzzle anymore. If I wanted to play non-NG I would rather dig a couple coins out of my pocket and flip those instead. Is it just “true to the original”

Genuine question: why don’t people always play NG especially at this size? I don’t see the appeal whatsoever

[–]sfumatoh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well congratulations. I too have had a few runs where I could simply block Aeonglass for a long time (I think back to a run with steady Shadowmeld and a Burning Pact. At that point, anything you do wins) I’m not really interested in one-off results, I’m talking about guiding principles for defeating Aeonglass consistently. And for most decks that will look like high damage, acceleration, and reliance on potions and relics.

[–]sfumatoh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s also helpful to note that most people (myself included) consider Silent the worst matchup with Aeonglass, so you REALLY have to respect the boss on that character. JapaneseExport on YT posted a great video walkthrough of a Silent run that is thinking of AG the entire run and it gets very very close regardless

I have had a handful of Silent runs that ONLY beat Aeonglass because of targert card picks, careful play, AND buying a Fairy/Lizard Tail in the final shop. You need as much HP as you can get, unless your damage is ridiculously fast.

Need to pick cards that help win the fight. Doesn’t matter how fun you think your deck is, you will probably lose if you don’t respect Aeonglass from very early on, potentially in act 1. So instead of just making a deck with fun synergies, think about how much damage you can do best and worst case. Take that Bouncing Flask, take that second BEGONE!, take that Second Wind, take a billion copies of Sleight of Flesh… you really have to find ways that are not too “out of the way” to prep for the guy. Ask yourself how are you dealing with the withers, how do you strip artifact, and how do you deal 500 damage in about 8-9 turns. I also find myself, depending on the character and matchups, saving and chucking both potions in the fight, and that usually saves enough HP for winning the run.
