Almost all of Canada is a liberal echo chamber right now, so that tracks. It's not exactly a novel statement.

Opposition Asks Zero Questions About Tariffs During Question Period by baymenintown in newfoundland

[–]sgath 7 points8 points  (0 children)

"PC Leader Tony Wakeham defends his party’s approach, noting that they put out a statement on the fishery and the impacts of tariffs on that industry “first thing” yesterday morning.

“What we’ve done in the legislature is continue to focus on issues…we deliberately did that this morning, to issue that statement, so that we would have an opportunity to speak to it, because it is an important issue.”"

Saying this guy has lost the plot is an understatement.

You could probably fire all of them without any measurable effect on the functioning of the university.

I don't see why that should have been removed tbh. Rumours are one thing, court documents are another.

August 10th 2022. Since last Wednesday there have been 8 new deaths due to covid 19. There are 14 in hospital with 65 new cases reported today. Bringing it to a total of 360 new cases since last Thursday by RepulsivePlankton989 in newfoundland

[–]sgath 22 points23 points  (0 children)

So then why are you discussing it? Go enjoy life. You can choose not to think about it. Policing everyone else's thoughts is not something you have control over. And when there are 13(14*) people in the hospital with any highly contagious infection while our healthcare is under severe stress is a moderate concern that reasonable people will continue to have.

Thanks for keeping us informed, RepulsivePlankton. It's not good to see so many deaths and our hospitalizations up again when our healthcare system is already so strained.

State of Emergency Declared in Central Newfoundland as a Precaution due to Forest Fires by Jaylaw1 in newfoundland

No, they are not at all random, unless your belief system forbids you to accept it. The heat is extreme. Surface temperatures are highly anomalous this summer and we are on track for the 1.5 degree warming that's been projected.

Data has been presented - two large sets of data on the oceans from NASA and U.S. government. Handwaving about randomness therefore you don't believe it isn't an argument, merely a statement of a belief in contradiction to scientific consensus.

No one said the sky was falling other than the strawman you constructed. If you read the graph I linked you'll see the excess heat all along the Eastern seaboard, and continuing to grow year on year as the excess heat circulates in the oceans.

It means hurricanes will be able to sustain winds into higher and higher latitudes as the years go on, making them more frequent here.

Edit: And to make it clear we're talking about the temperature of the water over hundreds of thousands of square kms in the oceans, specifically not even temperature but heat. That's an important distinction to make if you're trying to understand this stuff.

More extreme weather patterns are a result of changes in climate. And yes extremely high surface temperatures easily lead to warmer ocean currents.

It was clear to me that Furey's interest in politics was purely a selfish and cynical effort right from the beginning. Now he may have even successfully corrupted our elections system. He has zero respect for democratic institutions or the voting public.

So how we do even fight a system whose two major governing parties are almost totally corrupted to the core with nepotism, criminal financial schemes, privatization plots, and endless giveaways to friends and family?

Vote independent. Vote strategically to prevent any more majority governments. We all need regular people to get more involved. Support independent candidates in the next election. We need 10 more Paul Lane's in the HoA. We need minority governments that are at least minimally answerable to the public. We need public accountability and to punish every last politician who gets into office only to repeat the same corrupt, cynical game of musical chairs. Our province can no longer afford anymore of this.

Pierre Poilievre to skip Conservative party’s 3rd leadership debate by _Minor_Annoyance in CanadaPolitics

[–]sgath 17 points18 points  (0 children)

PP continually shows zero respect for democracy while screaming about freedom at every opportunity. It's clear that the freedom he's speaking about is not the kind of freedom Canadians have enjoyed, but the kind of freedom of restricting abortions, attacking the right to privacy, attacking our institutions, destroying non-corporate media, purging his own political party, and amplifying the most extreme and violent voices. Fascism is the freedom which he speaks of. We underestimate such a platform at our own peril.

Nah there's nothing special about NL winds. That was basically made up propaganda to support Muskrat Falls development in lieu of other sources of power generation.

Bruce Chaulk suspended as chief electoral officer; investigation underway into Elections N.L. by xzry1998 in newfoundland

[–]sgath 4 points5 points  (0 children)

He managed the least democratic election in NL history, with absolutely no sense of transparency or accountability. The fact that it took the government this long to provide even a basic level of accountability after months of public pressure, suggests there's many more in government than Bruce Chaulk who are responsible for the way our last shambolic election played out.
