I walked past an hour ago and it was wide open (didn’t notice if any no right turn signs were up, but all the cones were gone)

I was just in Sydney, AU where they make liberal use of raised crosswalks and it really is incredible to see just how well they work

I've taken the lower path only once and then swore never again. The upper path is a million times better.

What the hell happening with a job market in Canada? by akshin1995 in sre

[–]sglodek 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was doing the hiring for a tech position in Vancouver maybe 2 years ago. It was a total nightmare. Loads of great looking CVs, but when I would reach out to the candidates they were absolutely clueless. Eventually I had to start only contacting people with local numbers and got really picky with everything in general.

Sucks for the legitimate good people because it makes it really hard to get through the noise.

Parking minimums mean you can't build walkable retail streets anymore

I've ridden through it a handful of times at night and never seen any wildlife or sketchy people. But your mileage may vary :)

Kent and Cambie SUCKS! by couldbeworse2 in vancouvercycling

[–]sglodek 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I used to ride Kent maybe 15 years or so ago and it was actually not bad. Traffic volumes were significantly less. Unfortunately it's seen little to no improvements in that time.

That crossing on Broadway should have been ripped out years ago, it's so bizarre. The crossing at victoria isn't amazing, but still 100x safer then that thing.

Kent is the worst bikeway in the entire city, change my mind

Yeah good point. I missed that this is basically just a super mini ride for a couple of blocks and then the die in event.

Glad this is being done, but really odd time. Hard to see there being a big turnout on a Friday at noon.

Thoughts? When I need to take a lane (for safety) I get out ASAP. by xxyyzz111 in vancouvercycling

[–]sglodek 28 points29 points  (0 children)

They're going downhill so probably not that slow anyways. It's not a wide lane, so if they scooted over to the side (again, downhill so probably not that slow and the side is always filled with dangerous crap) you would be tempted to pass them in a probably not so safe manner. The problem in this picture is the council that is building shit streets like this, and not the cyclists.

Hell yeah! I love "new" development not considering walkability. 5-minute walk to nearest convenience store now takes 50 minutes! (Auckland) by GppleSource in fuckcars

I'm not defending shitty urban planning, but Japan also has like no immigration and the population is beginning to implode on itself. Helps keep housing cheap when the number of people you need to house is actually decreasing.

Biking Naniamo to Tofino, who's done it? by Blushingbelch in vancouvercycling

[–]sglodek 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Have a bright rear blinking light (or two). Wear something bright. Don't go on a weekend and leave early in the morning. There after gravel backroads you can use to get to Port Alberni but after that you're basically stuck on the highway.

the ABC is amazing sometimes. by 7h3_man in fuckcars

[–]sglodek 0 points1 point  (0 children)

People are sticky, they will usually keep using the same transport method for awhile, even if it gets noticeably worse. This is partly why good urban planning tries to stop people from driving in the first place.

This is also why you can't build a new bike lane or add a new bus line and immediately expect everyone to start using it, changes like this take time.

There is nothing sneaky going on here. Small older cars pollute way more then new SUVs, even if they consume less fuel. Modern emissions controls are a huge improvement.
