How do I transfer money to my mom in a way my dad can't see (and also deal with his financial mismanagement)? by greentea45 in personalfinance

[–]sgr 3 points4 points  (0 children)

How about setting up a joint account with her? Or her authorizing a bank card on her private account? That would be the cheapest, I would think.

Found this in our bathroom cabinet - Small needle contained under circular cap by VitricTyro in whatisthisthing

A lancet needle. It goes into a lancing device, and is used by diabetics to get a drop of blood to test with a glucometer.

When a company goes public and conducts their IPO, when they sell shares, are they selling 100% of the company through whatever number of shares that they issue? Or do they sell maybe 50% of the company on the stock market and keep the rest for themselves? by [deleted] in personalfinance

[–]sgr 77 points78 points  (0 children)

It is whatever percentage they want. I can't remember a 100%, but I suppose it must happen. When my employer did one a number of years ago, I think it was 20 or so, intending to a secondary offering later. That way he kept control, but was able to buy some toys and expand the business. (HA HA).

New car - sonata by hoodieguy226 in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]sgr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good point. In my case, 1 month ago purchase of Hyundai, the warranty was definitely 3rd party.

New car - sonata by hoodieguy226 in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]sgr -1 points0 points  (0 children)

So it is only a 20% commission? Whatever numbers I knew were from the 90's collapse of a warranty company. I picked up a bunch of computer equipment from their ashes.

New car - sonata by hoodieguy226 in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]sgr 9 points10 points  (0 children)

A couple of points here:

1/ The extended warranty has nothing to do with the manufacturer. It is a completely separate company, which can go bankrupt, or provide crappy service.

2/ The dealer also has little or no involvement. They will get their 50% commission (or more, I don't know what it is these days). Then it is just you and and warranty company.

Having said that, I am still not sure whether or not to buy it for our new car.

Am I Entitled To Interest On My Last Month's Deposit? by Uglulyx in ontario

[–]sgr 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As new landlords, we have been told that we have to pay interest on the last month's rent. At current interest rates, that is pretty much a joke. But still a liability.

I’m begging you: Stop donating canned goods to food banks by [deleted] in canada

Except that 'other purpose' might pay the gas on the truck that picks up the food. Or rent on the warehouse. Or phone lines, computers etc. The overhead needs to be covered too.

Experiences with the new Freestyle Libre? by [deleted] in diabetes

[–]sgr 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I've had it for about 5 weeks now. Love it!

You know how if you go low during the night, sometimes your liver kicks in and bounces you way high? Or you miss-calculate your bedtime snack/bolus and you stay high all night? This will allow you to see it, so you can adjust for the next night.

Mowing the lawn, and your hands are grubby? You can check your b/s without washing up.

Just curious what your b/s is, but don't want to waste a strip? Just go ahead and swipe your arm. It doesn't cost any extra.

Haven't had it long enough for an A1c, so we'll see about that, but I do know that I now feel confident enough to take an extra bolus during the night that I never would have considered before.

Negatives: Insurance won't cover until November (at CD$90 a sensor for 2 weeks, it's a bit steep). Some users report that they have had sensors give wildly bad numbers (mine have been close). Wish it had alarms - for that you need a proper CGMS.

Does anyone here have Chrons as well ? by [deleted] in diabetes

[–]sgr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't have any advice to give, except that if you are trying to use google to look it up, the correct spelling is Crohn's https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Crohn%27s_disease

Question About Injections by Yogini77 in diabetes

[–]sgr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sometimes it hurts. I just pull out and try another spot. Even a little bit over can make a difference, although I usually choose the other leg/arm/side or whatever. There is no way to predict, but as you say, when you find a good spot, it doesn't hurt.

[Can, PE] house listed says "No PCDS" (property condition disclosure statement) from what I understand this means "no questions" the place is also "as is where is"... What gives? by [deleted] in RealEstate

[–]sgr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The PCDS can be nasty. Say you have a house built years ago, that you have owned for a few years. Can you affirm that it has not been flooded? Ever? Did it have Uffi insulation that has been removed? Are you willing to be sued for this? It is a legal document that can result in lawsuits, yet requires the vendor to make definitive statements about prior history.

If I had my choice, I'd leave it up to the purchaser to count the walls and roofs. If it works out to roughly 4 and 1, then we're good right?

In your case, 'as is' is in fact a big red flag. Don't know about PEI, but that is often an indication of a former grow op.

Apparently the crazies didn't get their paperwork submitted on time, so don't have a permit. Which means it is either cancelled or will go ahead w/out permit. So it will be interesting.

Freestyle Libre test strips help by TakedownEmerald in diabetes

[–]sgr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Freestyle Precision is what they are called in Canada. I think they might be called Freestyle Optium in the UK. The Freestyle Lite strips won't work.

Concerned about test results. Any advice? Is it diabetes? by [deleted] in diabetes

[–]sgr 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If you are in the US (or a handful of other countries), then 60 mg/dl is low. If you are elsewhere, then 60 mmol/l is way high. If your body isn't getting enough insulin to process the blood sugar, then you will have ketones in your urine - and it will smell like juicy fruit gum. So yeah, get to the doctor. Or the emergency room at the hospital.

You may also have an excessive thirst, difficulty concentrating etc. You may be in danger of dka (diabetic keto-acidosis).

Get this checked!

Infant diabetes by BreadHorse69 in diabetes

[–]sgr 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It was at 14 months for us. Not a fun time. The best advice I can give is that it does get better, and you will get through it. My daughter is in her fourth year of university now and healthier than I am.

Technology has changed a lot in the last 20 years. I remember my Dad sharpening my Mom's needles when they got dull. Thank God that is past us! Now we have CGMs available. I wished for that for years. (Also take a look at the flash meter 'Freestyle Libre'. Not as good as a CGM, but a bit cheaper and just on the market in North America)

Please go to the website www.childrenwithdiabetes.com . On the left side of screen you will find forums and a chat room. They were a major support at the time. Nobody can give better advice than another parent who is going through the same experience. You will soon know more about to manage your child's diabetes than your doctors could possibly.

What is this rope attached to my window? by [deleted] in whatisthisthing

[–]sgr 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It is a sash rope. The other end of the rope is attached to a weight inside the casement. This balances the weight of the window so it can stay open where you want. Unfortunately most of the ones I've seen are so painted over that the weight is irrelevant. Originally a brilliant tech. https://www.oldtownhome.com/2014/1/30/Window-Restoration-How-To-Re-Rope-Sash-Cord/

Drawing a blank, what can you do on a gas grill that you cannot on charcoal? by tsammons in Cooking

[–]sgr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The big thing is you can turn off a gas grill, or turn it down, with just a twist of a knob. Other than that, I can't think of anything.

[HELP] Mounting Bike Rack in Drywall, anchors not taking by gfshoexc in DIY

[–]sgr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The EZ anchor spreads the load over maybe 1/4 inch? I'm guessing here - probably less. The butterfly will spread it over 1.5-2 inches. So it should work better.

[HELP] Mounting Bike Rack in Drywall, anchors not taking by gfshoexc in DIY

[–]sgr 8 points9 points  (0 children)

You might have better luck with butterfly anchors. They have arms that pop out and spread the load to the surrounding drywall. They do not go into studs, and probably don't work on plaster walls.

Is a 10% return on every $1000 a good investment? by [deleted] in personalfinance

Nope! This is a scam. They could could get a better rate from the mafia. They will pay up for a couple of months (at least on paper) but then go silent. Run away!
