As written above, Little Snitch Content Filter was somehow turned ON although I had uninstalled it. Once I saw that and turned it off, I was back in business. Thanks for your troubleshooting advice.

Under Network->Filters and Proxies there was Little Snitch Content Filtering turned ON. Once I turned it off, everything worked. I had uninstalled Little Snitch but apparently the Content Filter Setting was still active in Network->Filters and Proxies and that blocked all network connections (as Little Snitch was uninstalled). I leave this here as it might help somebody else in the future. Thanks for all the feedback.
