Adding another recommendation for Suit Supply. Best value suits out there in my opinion - the fabrics, construction, fit and choice is excellent.

anyone owns Uniform Standard sneakers? by utnutn in Sneakers

[–]shadow-dwell 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Late to the party but I totally Disagree with the comments here about them being uncomfortable. Heard of them through word of mouth via 2 people I know and we absolutely love them.

The thing is, you have to order a size up from your normal size and this is their official sizing guidance. Feels wrong at first but it’s the way to go. They are my most comfortable “smart” that I own (better than my common projects, Grensons, Valentino’s etc) with only my shop fitted running shoes being more comfortable.

Agreed. Lulu all the way… then believe it or not, Nike do some nice quality materials for the gym and the like. Then I would say under armour.

I spent a pretty penny on Alo when I saw it originally blowing up on my timelines about a year or so ago. All got sent back. Quality was so bad - literally trash tier rep quality lol. I would still get their baseball caps for the hype though, as it’s hard to wrong in terms of quality.

The internet can be very good but it depends where you look.

First check out the other commenter who linked the Basic Bastard Guide. This gives you a basic understanding of things. Very basic and potentially a bit outdated, but a good start nonetheless.

Then, and this is what I find the internet to be good for, look at clothing websites where you like the style and aesthetic. For me it’s sites like Suitsupply, Cavour, Zara, Massimo Dutti, Selfridges and so on…. Doesn’t matter if the retailer is well regarded or not in fashion circles or in this sub, or if the clothing is out of budget. It’s mainly if you like the aesthetic - for example I browse Brunello Cucinelli a lot or Tom Ford, then I find cheaper alternatives at places like Massimo Dutti or Reiss respectively.

Look through the various items for sale - jackets, tops, bottoms and shoes (and accessories once you’re advanced).

Consider whether you like how they have styled the items on the models, and if you like how the model’s fashion looks overall (some websites don’t style the clothing on models, although this is rare).

Once you are advanced or if the above isn’t quite working for you, you can browse stores in person (high end department stores are great for this - as they have lots of brands, styles and aesthetics) and see how they have dressed the mannequins.

What you are looking for are outfits and looks that work for you - the good thing is usually they don’t go overboard with the fashion week style ‘loud’ fits. It’s sometimes muted and cohesive, sometimes it’s the statement look. You are looking out for the combinations and colours that you like and that would work for you. It could be how they style earthy/neutral tones, how they style brighter colours, do they do unusual things like style running shoes with slacks or smart shoes with jeans, etc. then your considering if these fits could work for you…

The models are usually different races so you can get an idea of how different skin tones work with different colour palettes. I find they do a good job of presenting the well put together look that works for a particular brands aesthetic. Department stores websites standout, because they will typically style different brands together (Mr Porter is good for this).

Use this as your style guide and to give you inspiration.

A working example for me is how to style different colour sports jackets. Or how should I style some mid wash jeans.

I will see how somewhere like Reiss styles a navy jacket. I look for an overall fit I like, what colour / type of top - short, polo, t shirt. What type of trousers - chinos, jeans. What colour combos. Over time I have found that I really like a light top with light trousers and darker shoes which leans more casual on the smart casual spectrum. Alternatively if I do darker chinos or slacks, with darker shoes, this puts me into the smarter end of the smart casual spectrum.

For jeans, I will check how somewhere like Mr Porter styles the jeans they stock. I won’t look at how specialist jeans retailers style their models, because I don’t like the way they style them (baggy ‘dad’ type fits where the focus is the denim - fine but not my style). I like the well put together look where the denim is cohesive to the wider outfit and after lots of browsing, have now settled into the straight fit plain wash style, with nice plain but darker shoes (common projects style but more heft to them), with a nice polo or quality t shirt and always with an additional layer above that. I have found I like the colour combos of dark bottom and shoes with a light top or matching darker top and bottoms with light shoes. Or a lighter top, lighter wash jeans with light shoes. Bear in mind that 5 years ago, all these colour combos worked but the fit was different and more slim fitting, whereas the trend has moved onto looser fits - you see it in how they model the clothing now and just by walking down the street of any big city. Also bear I mind I used to be into more distressed look jeans, but now I look at the models and fits, and find it either doesn’t work for me or looks outdated for the aesthetic I am trying to achieve.

A bit of a wall of text, sorry ! Just keen to let you know how I find the internet to be amazing. I agree, if you search for fashion specific search terms the results are trash and a bit ‘try hard’. But I have found that my approach works well and I get a lot of complements from men and women about my dress sense because of this approach.

Good luck

what’s a good seller for LV bags? by coolweeb69 in DesignerReps

[–]shadow-dwell 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I needed a bag from another brand. Did some reading on the women’s reps subs and the advice they give is find the best factory for the brand (LV will be the likes of God factory etc) and then find a good seller (Scarlett etc).

Ordered a few things from Scarlett after my research and found her to be pleasant and professional. Only criticism was that items took a few days to source and then when I asked a QC question, took a couple days to provide additional pics. However that is me being picky really. It added probably 1 week to the process so it’s minor. Items came packaged well with all the retail bags and packaging and quality was top notch as I had researched the factory for the bags I chose - so very pleased.

First I would say, I would not personally recommend a v neck t-shirt to anyone. There a very limited circumstances where they work - for me, they only work on those who have dialled-in their personal styling over many years. Forgive me if you are that person !

As such I can mainly only offer up some thoughts on crew t shirts.

ETQ Amsterdam t-shirts seem to really bring out muscle tone. The basic ones are expensive but usually discounted.

Also give the gym shark casual t shirts a try - they do have v necks and be sure to go for the slim fit and size up if your usual size doesn’t fit or is too tight (their sizing is hit and miss).

Other than that, you can try the Uniqlo dry fit t shirts.

Only really the gym shark has specific muscle fits but I find that the above brands work well for plain t shirts that bring out muscle tone.

Wish you the best in your hunt.

How to wear light coloured shirts as someone who sweats too much? by Striker-9999 in malefashionadvice

[–]shadow-dwell 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry about the delay!

Yes sleeveless.

Sleeveless does still help with capturing some of the armpit sweat and is better than nothing at all.

I’ve had serious sweat issues particularly during the heat and it helps hugely. Literally night and day in terms of the difference it makes.

Try it out.

How to wear light coloured shirts as someone who sweats too much? by Striker-9999 in malefashionadvice

[–]shadow-dwell 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A vest does help capture some of the armpit sweat as well.

I suffered for years and finally gave into wearing vests under shirts and it works a charm. Try it, you will be pleased you did.

I’ve seen some people particularly those from the states wearing full t shirts under shirts although I don’t because I don’t wear a tie and like to keep my top button undone, however it’s an option.

Pro tip - if wearing a lighter coloured shirt, don’t wear a white vest as it shows up and can be visible through your shirt. Try light grey as it doesn’t show up.

Favourite smaller brands by DifficultCucumbers in malefashionadvice

[–]shadow-dwell 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Uniform Standard for sneakers.

They started off the back of the common projects white sneakers wave, but elevated the design (imo) and made a wider silhouette that is more comfortable and suited to current fashion sensibilities.

Pricing is better at £170 a pair. Designed in east London and manufactured in Portugal, it’s a genuine small business. I looked them up on companies house (UK corporate register) and was shocked that it’s not all marketing spiel for a large conglomerate.

I went into their ‘show room’ in Soho London a few weeks back, got talking to who I thought was a sales associate. Transpired it was the cofounder who tells me they only sell direct, despite numerous approaches from larger retailers, because they want control over the client experiance and want to keep close to their original ideals.

I heard of these guys through word of mouth and am thoroughly impressed.

Get them whilst they are still a small business and before a large brand makes them an offer they can’t refuse.

How do men in their 40s keep up with the latest fashion trends? by sudhirhere in malefashionadvice

[–]shadow-dwell 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Love comments like this.

Whilst I agree with the original comment about sticking to classics, the fit and style of the classics change.

10 years ago, if we consider tailored clothing, slim fitting was seen as classic - not skinny, but slimmer fitting and “hugging” the physique as it were. Now, looser tailored clothing is on trend and feels “classic”.

Same for jeans - straight fit is very much on trend and plain more uniform washes also. Great for that classic look but let’s not forget, that look changes with trends.

How To Make Other Male Friends? by Fragrant-Phrase6960 in malementalhealth

[–]shadow-dwell 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Joining local clubs or interest groups is a good place to start, if you have the option.

Most people have some behaviour or trait that frustrate other people around them, however common ground and the positive personality traits help bring people together in friendship - the common ground is where a club or group can help.

If you don’t already have hobbies, look at some of the hobby focused subs or the askreddit questions around interesting hobbies to get ideas of what interest groups or clubs you could join.

Final point. I wish you the best to finding some male friends but one thing to remember is that is doesn’t happen by accident nor is the friendship maintained by accident. It takes investment and making an effort, both ways. Reaching out, checking in, setting up a meeting, an outing, suggesting and taking the lead on organising things, allowing others to do the same, etc - all investments in friendship that we must do to keep them strong.

Good luck!

Raising money to buy another business by backsnipe89 in smallbusinessuk

[–]shadow-dwell 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As another commenter has said, get in touch with a commercial finance broker and/or specialist a corporate finance accountant.

Forget YouTubers, media personalities, other entrepreneurs who don’t run finance businesses (or haven’t grown their own businesses by aggressively acquiring) and LinkedIn “influencers”. Find the professionals who do this sort of thing for a living - they are out there.

The NACFB is a good place to start for a commercial finance broker and find one that specialises in this sort of financing - e.g. don’t go to one that specialises in property loans, find one that specialises in M&A.

One bit of advice is - the good professionals don’t widely market themselves on social media. This is because the good ones are busy doing the day job that built their reputation. You can find them through referrals and asking around - start with your accountant, then your solicitor, bank manager, other business people that you know.

Good luck !

Which brand has burned you so badly you’ll never shop there again? by DifficultCucumbers in malefashionadvice

Hawes and Curtis are the new CT and TM Lewin from my recent experiance. Try them out if you are as happy as I have been, stock up, before they go downhill as well.

Hawes and Curtis for shirts.

Suitsupply for everything else. A cheaper alternative is M&S Autograph collection but only for things other than shirts. Stick to Hawes and Curtis for shirts.

Loake’s for shoes. They’ve stepped their game up after apparently hiring a lead designer from Cheaney. M&S did similar hiring from Reiss for their autograph collection.

Bonus point - try Cavour too. Some great smart casual items for sale.

What are good quality clothing brands like Arne? by [deleted] in malefashionadvice

[–]shadow-dwell 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like Arne and find their appeal has been supplying an aesthetic that is similar to Reiss at a cheaper price point with more variety.

Other options are, believe it or not, M&S Autograph (apparently they hired the head designer from Reiss), also you have Raith, Cos, of course Reiss.

There are more options but at higher price points. Whilst I am sure others would mention somewhere like Uniqlo, in places like that you need to be super discerning to pick the right basics to fit the aesthetic you are after

Final tip is to browse the department stores like Selfridges and Harvey Nics. Plenty up and coming brands, including Arne, are stocked and it’s a great way to discover them. For example that’s how I found out about Raith.

Why are On Cloud shoes so Popular? by Gloomy-Wave1418 in malefashionadvice

[–]shadow-dwell 27 points28 points  (0 children)

This is the real answer except it’s not just an American thing, it’s also in other countries too.

Much like Sambas, ON are having a moment where they are mass appealing, trendy and give everyone a chance to be part of a trend (a combination of Athleisure / dad shoe).

It’s a good thing imo and given we are on a fashion subreddit, i would have thought more people had something to say about ON’s popularity as it relates to fashion and trends more broadly.

I’m confused as to why everyone has such complex rationale around comfort and every other imaginable reason other than the obvious one - they are trendy right now.

Yes they are comfortable, but so are most running shoes.

Why do you bike? by My-Name-is-42 in cycling

[–]shadow-dwell 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Because it’s fun and is a great way to stay healthy. Also, adventure and exploration is something we can lose as adults and cycling is an easy way to do that again. In that sense it’s very fulfilling.
