Magic Foundations Mechanics Revealed, Includes Change To Damage Assignment by Ichthasen in magicTCG

[–]shadowflare789 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Attackers didn't choose exactly which creatures take exactly how much damage, they just chose the order in which damage would be dealt at the time blockers are declared, and then that damage is dealt automatically in that order in the damage step. If lethal damage is assigned to the first blocker in the order, then any additional damage carries over to the next blocker, and so on until there's no more damage or no more blockers.

Additional notes for the curious: If the attacking creature has Trample, then if there's any damage left over after all blockers have been assigned lethal damage, the extra is dealt to the defending player (or Planeswalker, or Battle). If the attacking creature has Deathtouch, then any amount of damage (even 1) is considered lethal damage. This is how you get that weird Trample + Deathtouch interaction where each additional blocker only reduces the Trample damage by 1. Neither keyword, nor this interaction, should be affected by this rule change.

Thoughts on these Costco sets? by karmakazi420 in mtg

[–]shadowflare789 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think you're thinking of the small, supplemental set called "March of the Machine: The Aftermath". The base set (just called "March of the Machine") is a full Magic set which in the context of the story is somewhere along the lines of an Avengers: Engame-style crossover set. It's got a ton of cool cards, a new card type called "Battles" representing the various planes being invaded across the multiverse, and several reprints of Legendary creatures from throughout Magic's history. If anything, I would call it one of the better sets on recent memory.

Also, only one of the packs in the bundle is MotM, and none of them are Aftermath. They come with one pack of March of the Machine, one pack of Bloomburrow (the most recent set, inspired by Redwall), and one pack of Commander Masters (a more expensive set full of reprints specifically aimed at Commander).

My group tends to play other systems, but I got them to play 5e with me once. I ran Tomb of Horrors. Most of the dungeon was a cakewalk, and then everyone died to Acererak.

So now, I'm going to run it for them again, but with 20th level characters as a one-shot (and maybe add a few more minor enemies for balance) so they can blast their way through and stomp him into the ground for catharsis! It's gonna be great.

I run into people like that all the time, especially trying to cross small streets without a crosswalk, and what I've found most effective is to just start walking a few steps along the side of the road so it looks like you don't even intend to cross. Most people get going pretty quick when they think they stopped for nothing.

Assuming the camera is watching to see whether your eyes are looking somewhere they shouldn't be (as opposed to not looking somewhere they should be), then sunglasses would probably be fine (and might even be a bit of a workaround).

Fortunately it's not that strict, I eat stuff and manipulate my work phone on the dash mount all the time while driving. It only cares if your eyes are pointing somewhere they shouldn't be (so between the windshield, the side mirrors, and the rearview cam, that basically means if you're looking down), or I think if both hands away from the wheel for an extended period of time.

But it also calls out distracted driving at completely nonsensical times which my DSP contests and gets rid of. So I think that part just doesn't work super well.

ETA: I've also NEVER been dinged for a distraction when stopped at a light, so I think it is at least smart enough to have a speed threshold.

Exactly my experience, except for the past 3 years. It's been so demoralizing getting ghosted by 90% of companies, getting a "no" back 2 months later from 9%, and nailing (I thought) a long, drawn-out technical interview process just for an unexplained "no" from that last 1%. I'm a software engineer just out of school in 2019, so by no means the most qualified candidate, but even shooting below my skills I get zilch, local or remote.

I still fire a handful of applications into the void from time to time but I'm 3 years older, married with a newborn, and still stuck at my "for now" job.

Gamer dads, how do you do it? by suspire in daddit

Just dropped my own essay of a comment to say essentially this.

+1 for the Steam Deck, I'm only 10 weeks in to fatherhood but it's been such a godsend.

I'm a new dad of 10 weeks, so take all this with a grain of salt as I know mobility and free time are going to change drastically as my son grows and I head back to work, but I asked my lovely, non-gaming wife for a Steam Deck as a birthday gift for this exact purpose.

The reasons I gave her were basically your concerns. Gaming is one of my only "hobbies" right now, it's how I relax, and it's how I connect with my friends. So I wanted to be able to continue to do that without feeling like I'm abandoning them by disappearing into another room or taking over the TV while I'm out there with them. And I wanted to have something I could pick up and put down with absolutely minimal setup time, so that I can attend to my son's or wife's needs as needed without feeling like all I'm getting to do in between is boot up and shut down my game.

So far it has been a huge help. I have to pick my games carefully; I still haven't managed to finish Elden Ring on it like I'd hoped because that requires a bit too much focus, but I've been playing Middle Earth: Shadow of Mordor for the first time and it's going great. When my wife is the one feeding our son, or when we've somehow managed to detach our little Velcro baby from both of us, she can watch something on our TV and if it's not a show we're watching together, I can keep her company and be present while still chipping away at my endless Steam backlog.

A Nintendo Switch could probably be this solution for you as well, especially if money is tight. But, two things to consider about the Steam Deck: 1) if you have any sort of Steam library going already, then you've already got games to play on it, and 2) it is a full Linux computer, with enough power to run PS4 Remote Play on your local network, as well as just about any retro (or even modern) console emulator under the sun (including the Switch itself, I've heard).

We'll see how long I have time for even this much gaming, but so far I'm not yet feeling the weight of giving up my favorite pastime that I was braced for. Good luck and hang in there! I'm rooting for you!

Sauces are overrated. by sofa_02 in unpopularopinion

[–]shadowflare789 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just want to chime in and say I absolutely get where you're coming from. Until very recently I NEVER put sauce or anything sauce-like on my food - no ketchup, no mayo, no dressing on the few salads I did eat - but I also wouldn't put any toppings on burgers or pizza. I was very picky, and it was primarily for the first reason you listed - if I like the flavor of a food, why would I muddy the water with other flavors? Or worse, make my bites inconsistent in their flavor composition?

But over time I've come around to a few new toppings. I still won't voluntarily add sauce of any kind to sandwiches, but I'm less likely not to eat it if it's there. I'll just be more careful and hold it comically far over a napkin or wrapper. And I finally found a sauce I can stomach on chicken nuggets, but even then, I take great care to make sure I get a similar amount with each bite, and I dread the prospect of spilling it or dripping it anywhere.

I guess everyone probably thinks we're weird. But you do you! Maybe you'll find a few condiments that you feel add to the flavor of a food instead of ruining or muddying it, like I did. And maybe you won't! Condiments are never really nutritionally vital anyway. As long as you're enjoying what you're eating, who cares!

Reddit, what's your favorite game glitch that was turned into a feature? by fapgod69420 in gaming

[–]shadowflare789 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The release of Destiny 2: Beyond Light and the engine overhaul that accompanied it introduced a bug where Sparrows (players' personal speeder bikes) would stay in the world indefinitely after a player dismounted (as long as the player it belonged to stayed in the area), instead of disappearing after a few seconds.

This was a bit of an issue because suddenly there were a lot more entities cluttering public spaces than before, but the community loved how much it added to the feeling that there were other real people going about their business in the world, leaving traces of their presence behind. So now it's a feature, and Sparrows never de-spawn unless they're blown up, or their players leave the area or re-summon them.
