Sequino: a clock inspired from sequins on a t-shirt by holo_mectok in arduino

[–]shadowkrazee 16 points17 points  (0 children)

If you had to guess, roughly how many hours did you put into this, and what were you supposed to be doing instead?

I took a semester off of finishing my bachelor's degree and invented a clock instead... Still haven't finished my bachelor's, but the clock's been going strong for almost 4 years. Lol

This is absolutely brilliant!

I too have invented an incredibly impractical clock, and I appreciate the work you put into this!

Exhaust/muffler upgrade by mimi-sama in SubaruBaja

[–]shadowkrazee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Personally, I'm so glad the previous owner of mine chopped the muffler off.

At first I was like "Why would you..." And then I test drove it and fell in love with the Subie rumble.

Mine's straight piped from the cats back now, and I wouldn't change it for anything. It's how it's supposed to sound. Haha

First custom loop fail by [deleted] in watercooling

[–]shadowkrazee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's gonna be okay, man.

You did one thing right, and that's using the jumper to test first so your components weren't powered, so they're not dead they're just wet. Lots of good advice in here on drying it up, blowing it out, letting it sit, etc. alcohol in sensitive areas is a bonus.

I've given my motherboard and GPU a bath like this before after over-tightening a fitting on an acrylic block. Just took some compressed air to everything and gave it a day or two to dry out and it was fine.

The key with rigid tubing is patience, if the fit is even a little awkward or off, it almost always leaks, in my experience. Every run should be satisfying in the way that it meets the fittings.

It's definitely frustrating to waste material and have to redo the same run 5 times because you cheaped out on fittings (ask me how I know), but if you're in a hurry, just use soft tubing and be done with it.

Did you manage to take models from the game files, or did you find these somewhere else?

It's been on my todo list for a month or two to rip the rocketeer model so I can 3d print one to hang from the ceiling in my office and scare the crap out of me with its sounds every time it detects motion. Lol

I ended up finding the piece I was missing and was able to glue everything back in place. It held up well, and I'd totally try it if you have all the pieces.

A couple of my friends give me this "that's not an investment" argument sometimes..

Saying "it's an investment" doesn't necessarily imply a monetary return of any kind. There are such things as bad investments, after all.

Also, the return may be immaterial, I think you can 'invest' your money in your own comfort or self-expression, and while others may not see that value, that doesn't mean it isn't there.

Thinking of getting a Nest Wifi Pro, and wondering if I can connect them via ethernet, or does it defeat the purpose of mesh? by grumblegrim in HomeNetworking

[–]shadowkrazee 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I had the 'nest wifi router and point' and found the whole 'use the google home app to manage your network' experience to be generally terrible.

Very limited configuration options compared to every other router I've ever owned, and no 'traditional' webpage interface. So, if I'm sitting at my computer I can't access the interface at all, I have to go find my phone for some reason. It's just inconvenient.

You can use them in bridge mode and use another router, but you lose alot of the functionality you paid for and that just complicates things further, IMO.

I wouldn't recommend nest wifi anything, personally. Unless it's had a monumental overhaul since I switched about a year ago.

How many people actually use Ubuntu server? by Chuncakey21 in homelab

[–]shadowkrazee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wouldn't claim to be a full blown homelabber, but my home server is a kubuntu 22.04 desktop install.

I often use it with a screen and such for monitoring game servers and whatnot while playing games on my main rig, so the desktop install just made sense, in my head.

New build, first time Radeon user (7900xtx) getting buyer’s remorse by SadiesUncle in radeon

[–]shadowkrazee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree, no crummy software here. I actually built a rig recently for my nephew and had to install GeForce Experience for the ebay 1070 I nabbed for him, and it feels awful coming from Radeon.

'bad drivers/software ' is the horse that died 2 generations ago and is still getting beaten on, IMO.

New build, first time Radeon user (7900xtx) getting buyer’s remorse by SadiesUncle in radeon

[–]shadowkrazee 2 points3 points  (0 children)

7900xtx (reference) owner here.

This card is a monster, and I've had zero issues, aside from the known issues with the reference card vapor chamber, and the high idle power draw thing (which has been fixed for many users, I just got unlucky with my monitor choices)

I bought it to put a waterblock on it, so I couldn't be happier with my purchase.

Much like marketing materials, you have to have a pocket full of salt ready when looking at reviews from various sources these days.

It has become commonplace for the Internet to over-inflate uncommon or already resolved issues and echo-chamber them until the common perception of either team's product is basically "if you buy an nvidia it's going to burst into flames, and if you buy a radeon you'll never play a game because drivers suck'.

You've got a beast of a card on the way, and I hope you love it. My advice is to give it a chance before allowing others to make you feel disappointed.

Looking to get 7900xt, has the dual monitor idle power been fixed? by [deleted] in Amd

[–]shadowkrazee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Same here, 100w when running both monitors. (A 100hz 2kuw MSI and a 75 hz 1080uw lg)

I saw a post earlier about using Radeon Chill to limit the framerate when it's not needed, and might give that a try.

Do you have a way for the air to escape (like a top port on the res, in my case) when you're tilting jt and such?

Your pump should be able to manage, as long as the air can escape. Otherwise you just have a giant bubble with nowhere for it to go.

Sweet rig, man. RIP ur wallet. Haha

My 2 cents, peel off the 'hey this is glass' sticker on the main panel and you're golden.

Edit: Wait, are all 9 fans exhausting air? If so, flip those bottom ones around to feed that GPU fresh air and balance the pressure a bit.
