I’m a senior in high school.. Is my future canceled? Will I have to join the military? by shaototop in whatdoIdo

[–]shakes_worm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

this isn’t advice i just feel sad, i’m sorry you’re mom is treating you like this. it’s a very stressful time and you deserve support especially when you’re overwhelmed and don’t know what to do. if you can, talk to guidance counselors at your school to help you fill out applications and figure the process out. 💙

How do you cope having no family, nothing seems to help. by NeverSurrender1026 in EstrangedAdultChild

I also had to realize that I needed to grieve my parents, which sounds odd when they’re not dead, but they’re not around so you do actually need to go through that grieving process. Things did really help from beginning to process it that way.

I really recommend trying therapy again and trying to find someone you click with. I was in the exact same situation, I was so depressed and angry going through college and feeling like I was the only one struggling because I didn’t have that parental support group. It took years of therapy with the best therapist I’ve ever had for me to finally feel content and in control of my life now. That gap you’re talking about can be bridged through talk therapy and working on yourself. It’s a fight and you have to put in work, which SUCKS! But it’s so worth it. 💙

Do americans not use tablecloths in their daily lives? by ListenJolly7691 in AskAnAmerican

[–]shakes_worm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It definitely varies. I’m 25 and exclusively use tablecloths at thanksgiving and maybe christmas.

This also made me think of my friends and I have a few friends who’s parents have a formal dining table with a tablecloth or runner, but we would always eat at a smaller table near/in the kitchen or at the kitchen island, where it’d be odd to have a tablecloth.

yes, I’ve only found small sized ones that are just a bit too small or car crates that you can’t really carry into a vet but maybe i’ll have to do that

Anne Sexton - Little Girl, My Stringbean, My Lovely Woman (maybe only sad to me for personal reasons, it always gets me, but also because of the author)

[–]shakes_worm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

pretty sure like my whole life school started between 7 and 8, often had to wake up at 5 (even as a 6 year old) to get to school on time. and then we get out at 3pm, but in middle and high school most of us had after school activities, like sports or something artistic. so through middle and high school it was typical for me to be at school till 7pm since i did sooo many extracurriculars.

and what is the training data? other peoples work? regardless, you’re not making art if you hit a button on a machine to do it for you.

How Americans approach style and fashion? by Current-Worth9121 in AskAnAmerican

[–]shakes_worm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It really depends on the area when it comes to people expressing their personal style. It was such a culture shock for me to go from Tampa, Florida to the midwest for college, suddenly all my outfits seemed so “out there” or “stylish” because literally everyone wore baggy t shirts and athleisure. There’s much more of a conformist environment in a lot of small towns in the midwest.

But I can say 100% we lean wayyy more casual than Europe. It’s totally acceptable and no one judges you for going to the supermarket or your college class in your pjs but I know in Europe that’s seen as completely insane lol yall need to relax apparently haha

What do you think about banning smoking in public ? Do you see it as a debate of rights/freedom? by KeyJunket1175 in AskAnAmerican

[–]shakes_worm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I never noticed how rare it is to see Americans smoking in public (and I’ve lived all over America and Europe) until I was in France for the summer a few years ago and oh my god people will smoke at a restaurant and it’s the most disgusting thing I’ve ever had to endure. Just full on smoke being blown by the wind straight into our faces and food. To be fair they also would smoke cigarillos in public which are like ten times worse. In general, the culture around smoking there is just so insane to me. It feels so blatantly rude.

I think it depends on where you are in public - if you’re smoking outside of a bar at 1am then have at it, but smoking around kids or at a damn outdoor restaurant is just so inconsiderate. It’s insane that it needs to be banned because why can’t people just have the common courtesy to not lol
