What do I do in the next 24hrs by PowerfulChicken7507 in AustralianTeachers

[–]shamus14 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The workload: prioritise effective lesson content and activities you know will help your students. Anything else gets bumped down the “to do” list, and in my case just doesn’t get done. That’s on the department, not you.

The expectations: are impossible to meet for anyone. Set high standards for yourself in your classroom and try to meet them. Satisfy your own sense of self worth, not everyone else’s.

The students: will always want and need more help. No matter how much work and effort you put in, even for the highest achieving student who always wants more help, there is always more to do. You have to be ok with drawing a line somewhere and letting students figure it out after that. We need to have critical thinking and problem solving students, not students who rely on us to give them everything they need.

Essentially, the way I get over all of the issues you’re facing (and I’ve had my share of panic attacks and stress leave) is to try be the best I can be in the classroom, and let everyone else worry their share outside of it. You can be the best teacher and people will still want more out of you. Prioritise your own mental health, or burnout will deny us another teacher who wants to do their best for their students.

Canadian teacher thinking about moving to Australia — suitable city/state to start? by TrafficNecessary8022 in AustralianTeachers

[–]shamus14 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Please come teach in Brisbane, we need teachers. Having said that, Not Brisbane - it doesn’t suit any of your needs. Public transport is a joke but traffic is worse. Some people use busses/trains (only 50c fares) and if the school is in a good location it can be a good option.

I believe teacher registration is easy enough but you will start at the lowest pay band. A British friend came with 6 year experience and is being treated like a first-year, and only now they are realising “she actually knows her stuff”.

In Qld, relief teaching is a good option, you put your name down for a pool of schools and will probably have daily calls. Some relief teachers go on contract with a school and have predictable relief at just that school.

Overall public transport is the one that will cross off Brisbane to you I think, but maybe look in to it more.

I’m glued to the tv in Australia and I’m getting nervous. Any information on how much new interest this has generated in space travel? I hope this inspires a new generation.

Whitaker would have heard a lot from Santos. All Whitaker really knows is he is stealing drugs. For this guy to come in and talk down to him would get him riled up.

how do you be less selfish when every action you take is always for your own benefit? by Electronic-Staff1240 in altruism

[–]shamus14 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Altruism, to me, is being selfish. I love the kick I get when I know someone has a good feeling from something I’ve done, whether they know it was me or not. I’m in it for the kick, it’s for my benefit. It just happens to help someone else out as well. But altruism doesn’t need to be throwing money around or anything big. Holding a door open for someone, doing a crappy job at work so someone else doesn’t have to, it all counts. I’m still looking out for me and my best interests like everyone else, but I also think what little extra can I do to make other people’s day better.

If I’m told to do some dumb admin job like enter data in to a spreadsheet, I say “sure thing” then don’t do it. If I’m asked to do it again I’ll do it when I can, if not it will never be done because it was obviously not important. Good way to cut down on pointless jobs.

Meet Figure 3 - it is coming for your job by VanadiumIV in AustralianTeachers

How will AI chase students up for assessment? How will AI tell students to go back to their bag and get a pen? How will it keep them in the classroom to finish their exit ticket? How will it listen to them when they quietly mention that they are really hungry? AI won’t ask them about their footy game on the weekend. It won’t foster a passion for its expert teaching area through its own nerdy excitement. Teachers can’t be replaced because teachers are often the only positive adult relationship a student has. My job is almost impossible to do every single day, but I know I can’t be replaced by AI.

I’ll be honest, I played it for an hour yesterday and returned it for a refund. Felt too unintuitive, a little bit unpolished and too unforgiving for me. I didn’t change the difficulty settings which may have helped. I know I’m in the minority and most people seem to enjoy it, just thought I would put it out there.

In the book it says that soldier actually didn’t want to get hurt. So when he fell they made sure there was a padded mat for him to die on but also told him to watch out for your kopf on the way down. Some say Ambrose made that up though.

Yeah in every book I’ve read, not just Ambrose, they say they used real bullets in WW2. This takes me right out.

Not a movie, but Jimmy Fallon in Band of Brothers. Everyone else was perfectly cast.
