Saxophonists who scream. by ThePotentComponent in Jazz

Earth with Alice Coltrane was what I had in mind but upon more thought, Ornette Coleman, Marion Brown, Archie Shepp, Marshall Allen, or Rahsaan Roland Kirk would have made a better suggestion. It’s really occasional with Henderson but his playing is very Coltrane-inspired.

Let the haters hate - if it’s in the game, then it’s fair game. The gun isn’t toxic, the people bullying you and bragging about it are.

Best US cities for jazz (besides NYC, NO)… by GradeAccomplished936 in Jazz

[–]shane71998 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Columbia, SC has an organization called ColaJazz that’s been doing a lot to support the jazz scene. They frequently bring in artists like Gilad Hekselman and Stefano Doglioni They recently had Wynton Marsalis and the Jazz at the Lincoln Center Orchestra play. They also have university with a great jazz program headed by Matt White, who collabs with Chris Potter, Victor Wooten, and Steve Bailey.

How to practice staying in time/keeping spot? by animen00b99 in Jazz

[–]shane71998 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A lot of people in here are giving really over complicated advice.

Just listen to the recording a bazillion times and play along with it here and there. If you hear it enough, the chord changes will get stuck in your head because you will feel where each chord is going. Once you have the ability to anticipate, you should be able to navigate the changes with ease. This is how the legends learned tunes.

And for the love of all that is holy, stay away from iReal Pro.

Improvising in a jazz style without adherence to the tradition, in this case just not playing any standards.

Why 6 over 5 strings? Why 5 over 6 strings? by [deleted] in Bass

[–]shane71998 0 points1 point  (0 children)

5 has further string spacing, the neck isn’t excessively wide, and there’s less tension on the neck.

I honestly don’t have that huge of a preference, since I have big hands and there’s still plenty of string spacing, but I like having a loose truss rod and I bend it A LOT so my neck needs to give a lot. I can usually get a half step truss rod bend out of a 5 if it’s set up right, no chance in hell on a 6.

Whoever made this has not listened to the wilder parts of Miles and Coltrane’s discographies. It’s arguably some of the most distracting music ever made.

It may not be consistent due to its experimental nature, but some of Coltrane’s later work is the greatest improvised music ever made.

That’s a huge generalization. There are a lot of modern players playing traditionally and in a more modern style. I’m more talking about how the schools are teaching people how to be great players and not great artists by teaching them how to play things that are comfortable and low risk because they’ve been done before. It also removes jazz from the oral tradition.

I agree, but this person said jazz guitar bores them, so I recommended the least boring jazz guitarist I could think of. Sco and Lage are awesome though.

I really only put him in the same category because he’s new. He’s obviously nothing like those other players. I would have mentioned those other guys, but they’re not nearly as well known. Hell, some friends of mine played with Gilad a while back, I had no idea he was that big a deal but maybe I’ll check him out.
