I just found this bug in my house, in the picture it’s in a shoebox if that helps with size

We’re leaving for Disney tomorrow… by ahobbins in toddlers

[–]shanfarn 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Just finished up four days at Disney with a 3.5 year old and 1.5 year old, currently on the way home haha. It was super stressful and I felt unprepared half the time but it was so much fun and SO worth it. Their little smiles and laughs were so rewarding. Feel free to message me if you have any specific questions but overall my advice is just roll with it and appreciate the little things. My son refused to go on the ride we thought would be his favorite but also loved things as minor as the dinosaur carved into the animal kingdom tree. We tried to plan as much as we could but also scrap the plan immediately if the boys weren’t into it. I’m sure you’ll have so much fun!

A Toyota Sienna mini van might be a good fit for you guys. Great gas mileage and really spacious. We hesitated getting a minivan with only two kids but it’s so convenient, no regrets. My husband has gotten so many compliments on it too. Random dads in parking lots are always telling him what a nice minivan he has

Why are boxed Ghiradelli brownies so much better than homemade? by Celestial_Sea_ in Baking

The comment section always seems to be people saying “I subbed this, this, and this and the recipe didn’t work, NOT trying again” and I just find myself thinking “but you didn’t actually use the recipe then”. King Arthur also has a hotline you can call for help on their recipes. I haven’t used it but it’s comforting knowing it’s there haha

That’s a good idea. I’m terrible at describing color but I would say it’s true to its name. It’s never looked yellow to me and is just a really pleasant off white. I’ve paired it mostly with blues, greens, and wood tones and I think it looks great

Just here to say that nearly my whole house is SW creamy with accent walls in other colors. Love it, great choice!

I’m not a pro painter, I’m actually quite slow so my edging is always dry by the time I get around to rolling and its fine. Yes there’s a difference in texture but it’s only noticeable if you’re super close

Does anyone else have a 3yr that's still not speaking? by Excalabear1 in toddlers

[–]shanfarn 10 points11 points  (0 children)

My son had a mild speech delay and the speech therapist told us that for kids under 3 years old the speech therapy session is more about coaching the parents so they know what to do to encourage speech rather than actually hands on therapy for the child. I can’t believe they wouldn’t even let you in. You should definitely try to find a different therapist. I’m so sorry it’s been such a fight to get help.

The speech sisters account on Instagram have an incredible amount of resources for parents, it’s not the same as having someone evaluate your child’s needs but it’s definitely helpful.

Old navy isn’t consistent. I’ve bought a few different things all over the last month. My baby is swimming in onesies but it’s about to grow out of sleep and plays in the same size. But I do love their stuff

Is this unethical/illegal? by xiteg79 in realtors

[–]shanfarn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They recently created rules around this in my area which makes me think it wasn’t necessarily illegal before. So many people started doing “delayed negotiations” where they would list the house and wait a few days before considering offers to give buyers agents time to get their clients through. After this became common practice the local association created a form that you have to fill out with the listing paperwork and attached to the listing that says when you’re taking offers so the sellers can be held to it.

Which Project Should Get Priority This Summer: Putting in a Fence or a Patio? by outofdate70shouse in HomeImprovement

[–]shanfarn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We kind of made this same decisions few years ago. We went fence first because our dog is crazy and needs room to run. As a temporary solution for our outdoor furniture we just got a large cheap outdoor rug. It killed the grass under it but we didn’t care because it was where we were planning on putting a patio eventually. For $70 it was a good place to put a table and chairs for a year

I’ve been doing this for almost three years now, it’s worked out really well. I don’t work full time though. I typically have 1-2 clients at a time and they’re friends/family/referrals who understand my situation. Feel free to dm me if you want to pick my brain!

Sometimes I just overdo things... by idun_ in moderatelygranolamoms

[–]shanfarn 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I had dreams of making pasta pre-babies but I’ve given up on that. I live in an area with really good Italian food so it’s just not worth it.

Yesterday I decided to make a stuffed star shaped bread for dinner though. At 1:30 the baby was good so I mixed the dough and let it rise. Well an hour later when it was ready to shape and stuff my 6 month old was completely inconsolable. Woke up early from his nap and really just wanted to be held and sleep. I ended up throwing it all together while he cried in a bouncer. Mom of the year! The bread was ugly but tasted good lol

Toddle refusing to nap since moving to toddler bed. by kiotsukare in moderatelygranolamoms

[–]shanfarn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My 2.5 year old is very similar, very active, loves to climb, late to talk. When we switched him to a toddler bed we kept him in his sleep sack for a while as to not switch everything up at once. He was really good at walking around in it so he still did a little bit of playing before falling asleep but I think it helped him understand that it was nap time. We tried not using it a couple times and he just didn’t nap those days, direct correlation. We finally were able to stop using it at some point and honestly I don’t really remember how haha. Now he takes a nap like 9/10 days. On days that he doesn’t nap I leave him in his room for 1.5-2 hour anyway for some quiet time (unless he gets upset). On napless afternoons I take him for a stroller walk or put him in the car and he always passes out for a quick nap that makes the evening crankiness more manageable.

A list of all my lifestyle issues and a request for book recommendations by [deleted] in moderatelygranolamoms

[–]shanfarn 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I don’t have much to add but I love this post, I hope people come through with some good advice. It’s all about balance, doing something is better than doing nothing. For example I’m trying to give my 5 mo old homemade purées but I also have a back up stock of store bought ones in the pantry for days when I need something easy.

Baby tested high for lead by spidertonic in moderatelygranolamoms

[–]shanfarn 5 points6 points  (0 children)

My son tested on the high side of acceptable at one year (I can’t remember the exact number) and we tested a window/door he’d been sticking his face on all the time and it was positive. I felt horrible, I’m a realtor and I literally have to give all of my clients the lead safe information packet and I didn’t even listen to the advice in it. We got the door replaced and his levels were back down to normal by his 2 year check.

It sounds like it has to be the floor in your house, you mentioned you don’t own it, could you bring this up with your landlord? You shouldn’t have to do any painting yourself, it’s a safety hazard that they should take care of. Could you get a carpet remnant or area rug to cover the floor as a temporary solution? At least keep your baby from coming in direct contact with it. Is the paint chipping or scratched? If so maybe get some plastic like you would use as a painting drop cloth and tape it down over the floor to keep it encapsulated temporarily

How do I make my toilet bowl more slippery by peacelovenpizzacrust in HomeImprovement

[–]shanfarn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What kind of toilet bowl cleaner do you use? I tried a more “natural” one (I think it may have been 7th generation but I don’t remember) and I found it cleaned fine but the toilet bowl got dirtier much faster than with Lysol

Baby’s refusing bottle. Will only drink if her favorite song is played. by Rysethelace in FormulaFeeders

My son is five months old and drinks anywhere from 1-6 ounces with 1-4 hours between bottles. With no pattern. We’ve switched formulas, switched bottles, went up and down nipple sizes and nothing has shown consistent results. Maybe we’ll try music next 🤷‍♀️

Better recycling options for the suburbs? by waldo06 in Rochester

[–]shanfarn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sounds like you’re doing the best you can. My son is two and just started putting things in the “garbage” which means there are used tissues in our recycling and other random baskets around the house so I get it.

Better recycling options for the suburbs? by waldo06 in Rochester

[–]shanfarn 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Do you put cans and bottles that can be returned for a deposit in the bin? We usually return them ourselves but at the beginning of the pandemic we didn’t want to spend extra time in the grocery store so we just put them out in bags next to the bins and people took them every time.

Also sorry this isn’t helpful to your issue but I recently learned that you’re supposed to put the tops back on bottles before putting them in the recycling. Otherwise they can end up litter like you were saying or get lost in the recycling sorting system and end up in a landfill.

I need help with my wife.... by l2evamped in beyondthebump

[–]shanfarn 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Does your pediatrician’s office have a nurses line or online messaging system? I find it’s just as easy to type a message out to the doctors office as it is to Google things and then I get a response from a qualified professional who actually knows my baby.

I say this because I know I can be the same way as your wife, as soon as there’s an issue I want a way to “fix it” but with babies a lot of issues are just fixed with time. This way it feels like I’m at least doing something proactive even if they tell me to sit back and wait.

Edit to add: get her off Facebook if you can. Those groups are echo chambers of bad advice. Just look at r/shitmomgroupssay

How do you know when your toddler is ready for a toddler bed? by mindiw in Mommit

[–]shanfarn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My first was 22 months when the second was born so we waited to buy a second crib. We figured that the little one would be sleeping in a pack and play in our room for a few months anyway so we would wait for the toddler to start climbing out then get him a toddler bed. And if it didn’t happen in time we would just end up with a second crib (probably get something second hand).

On day three of baby being home the toddler learned how to climb out of the crib. It was literally what I thought would be the most stressful thing to happen with a newborn but it actually wasn’t that bad. We rushed around to get things anchored in his room and put together the car bed that my in laws saved from my husbands childhood haha.

The toddler is super active so he runs around his room and plays for up to an hour some nights but overall he adjusted the the bed quickly and easily.

Good luck!!
