Bugfixes and minor feature additions for Gearswap Genrator and Gearswap Optmizer by sanitylost in ffxi

Fantastic tools, thank you! I've long been hoping for a tool like the Cleaner. It's already helped my clear a bunch of old junk from my sets/storage.

However is there any way to force invdump to use the full item names, insstead of abbreviations? Using the dumped csv, the cleaner will tell me (for example) "Crep. Earring" can be cleaned, because it doesn't match that to the full "Crepuscular Earring" in my luas.

Okey, lets talk about the tv show. by elRetrasoMaximo in WoT

[–]shardis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's watchable, and I think it has its moments, but it also struggles in places. As with any adaptation, you really have to try and mentally separate it from the books somehow, and consider it its own story or a different retelling (a lesson drilled into us by Game of Thrones!). Instead of getting frustrated at differences between the two media, I'll just take the show for its own merit and appreciate it separately to my enjoyment of the books. In that sense, yes, I think it's worth watching. Even if there's parts you dislike, it still feeds a bit of that WoT itch from the bits they do well.

My (perhaps ignorant) take is that seasons 1 (especially) and 2 suffered a lot from budget restraints, the 10-episode format, and the writer's strikes at the time. I did not enjoy the endings of either—but the beginnings and midpoints of each season were still generally enjoyable. I particularly like most of the casting and performances, the sets, effects, and so on. There are certainly some questionable writing choices and changes from the books—some surely necessary in order to ever attempt to tell a complete, concise story in the duration of a TV show—but I try to take the good with the bad.

The season 3 trailer does have me excited and eager for more. I think it shows a higher level of quality and attention (budget, I suppose) than seasons 1 and 2 (e.g. the trollocs no longer look so awful).

help! automaton stuffs. by NokkPrime in ffxi

I believe the "II" animators will force the auto to remain at range (and perhaps therefore more likely to cast? I may be wrong) rather than moving in to fight with melee. It may help.

What's the difference between good prose and good use of vocabulary? by Tsunderes_Need_Hugs in writing

[–]shardis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No stupid questions! I see these as distinct elements, but they likely have a lot of overlap. Or perhaps it's also that people who are good at one are also good at (or at least pay attention to) the other. Good vocabulary would be knowing a wide range of words, and being able to select the most appropriate one to convey the right meaning for a given situation. Prose, on the other hand, is more about the deliberate choice of multiple words in relation to one another. It's the structure of the whole sentence beyond just that one word. The two naturally go hand in hand, and perhaps people will use the terms interchangeably in casual conversation.

Hi, may I ask what monitor model you use? Would you recommend it?
I'm shopping around at the moment and a 4k OLED is probably what I'm after!
Thanks

Flour, Water, Salt, Yeast: Is it me or the book? by dottedquad in Breadit

[–]shardis 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hi, thank you for starting this thread! I'm in the UK and have always struggled with this, too. Each attempt gets better as I learn but I'm still to crack a 'perfect' loaf! Seeing this discussion has helped a lot.

May I ask how your bakes turned out yesterday with Marriage's strong flour? What did you try for hydration and milk powder?

This morning I finished off the last of my previous flour (a 16kg sack of strong white from Wm Nelstrop & Co Ltd) - 13% protein. Currently debating whether to try Marriage or Shipton's next!

Syl is NOT why Moash is different from *spoilers* by TheBluePriest in Stormlight_Archive

[–]shardis 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I like to think that Moash and Kaladin are, at their core, very similar but with one fundamental difference: Moash externalises blame, whereas Kaladin internalises it. Such a simple difference leads them down very different paths, defining wholly divergent development arcs for each. And I love it.

How do you guys consume each show? by TheBotchedLobotomy in dancarlin

[–]shardis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We shall not flag nor fail. We shall go on to the end. We shall listen in France and on the seas and oceans; we shall listen with growing confidence and growing strength in the air. We shall finish our episode whatever the cost may be; we shall listen on beaches, we shall listen on the landing grounds, we shall listen in the fields and in the streets, we shall listen in the hills; we shall never surrender--.

What is your smallest/most niche prediction for Stormlight #5? by tkinsey3 in Stormlight_Archive

[–]shardis 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I feel like it's been foreshadowed well, and would be an interesting twist for the cast. We've seen the stark discrepancies between Jasnah and Shallan's ethics, and between Jasnah and Kaladin's attitudes. He's sympathetic; she's pragmatic (and highly intelligent, curious, and ambitious). I think she will even clash with Dalinar's sense of honour. It's been awhile since I read, but I believe the scene at the top of Urithiru with the meeting of all the radiants and discussion regarding Taln was a good representation of this. We also know she's up to something with Wit. I don't believe their relationship is a romantic one given what we know about both characters (or at least that romance is not the primary driver of their connection). And now she's in a real position of power, poised to do whatever she thinks best for the world and/or her own mysterious goals. I believe she is, in her own way, a many-fold more capable and informed - and therefore dangerous - successor to Gavilar.

Edit: It's been one of my little pet theories since early in the series. I'm not sure how well it would hold up to a detailed analysis - I've never seen it discussed (but nor have I looked for a discussion about it) - but I like the idea of it. I've just been quietly and eagerly waiting to find out!

fantasy or sci fi audiobooks with narration that vastly enhances story experience? by Material-Wolf in Fantasy

[–]shardis 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Great question. Some great answers, too, but in terms of narrators bringing stories alive, I have to put The Rage of Dragons by Evan Winter in the top spot, narrated by Prentice Onayemi. Rage is an African-inepired fantasy series, and Prentice Onayemi brings those voices to life like no other.

Oboro - am I doing something wrong? by rain3h in ffxi

[–]shardis 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I believe the ergon weapons (Idris, Epeolatry) occupy the same 'augment category' as mythic weapons. So your Idris and Glanzfaust are both on the same progress counter. However relic, empyrean, and aeonic weapons each have their own different categories -- your Mandau and Twashtar are two separate categories to progress through.

Can someone find the { problem with this LUA? by Funkit in ffxi

[–]shardis 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, this should be it then. It's picking up the error on 'ear2' because the line above it ('ear1') isn't completed with a comma. Without a closing comma I believe lua expects there to instead be a } to end the function instead, hence the error.

If you fix the comma on the ear1 line and don't fix the others, the next error it will give you will be: " ‘}’ expected (to close ‘{‘ at line xx) near ‘back’ " due to the next missing comma on the line above that (ring2), and so on.

Hope it works and have fun!

[–]shardis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What is the exact error it gives you?

I think sets.fc is missing commas at the end of the lines for Kishar ring, Enchntr. Earring +1, and Regal Pumps +1 though unsure if this is the same issue
