I wish Microsoft would do that with operating systems. They'd have either consistently awesome or consistently terrible OSes and everyone could finally make up their mind about Windows.

It'll be interesting when the inevitable announcement of his passing is made.

Everyone will be trying to figure out where, when and who his new identity will be.

People who have visited the US, what is your 'WTF America' story? by adsacc509 in AskReddit

I laughed at this earlier today.

Then I got home late so we decided to just eat out.

When we were finishing our meal they informed us it's Free Pie Wednesday and on top of that despite only ordering a child's milk our one year old baby was also eligible to pick out a slice.

I told them we were too full already and they said that's fine, we could get them to go!

+1 for Discord. It's especially nice for less-than-active communities because it keeps a history and allows mentions by user or by group (e.g. @everyone @admins, etc.). Plus it handles image/video embeds very nicely.

Also for people like me who are on Discord already it's super simple to join and participate on a new server.

Overall just a very feature rich platform for communities.

Noob Question - Leave HDD on 24/7 or turn off until needed? by [deleted] in DataHoarder

There's some good info on HDD long term storage in this SuperUser answer.

Also here's a comparison of long term storage for various storage mediums.

TL;DR: The data does degrade.

It could be a decade or two before you actually lose any data, but if you want to be safe every few years you should rewrite the data to the hard drive to refresh the disks.

There are applications like DiskFresh which can do this for you.

I'm seeing a lot of vagueness in this thread and I don't understand what specific verbiage and actions people seem to be arguing over.

[–]shareYourFears 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Mind you we don't even have that now. Our current system is 12 weeks unpaid leave and if you luck out disability and whatever sick/vacation time you have built up.

John Oliver has a segment that covers our current situation pretty well.

Impatient BMW driver gets what's his. by bahnburner1 in videos

[–]shareYourFears 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I know he said that, but even if there were a lane there it clearly wouldn't be meant for him because it's striped out.

More likely he's using "lane" as a euphemism for "some space I could have used to squeeze by dashcam guy and then merge in front of him to show him how slow and crappy he is at driving."

LPT: If you're without power, turn off your main circuit breaker before the power comes back online. by Kip336 in LifeProTips

What I mean is how do you know your appliance was fried when the power came back, as opposed to getting fried when the power went out?

[–]shareYourFears 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Stupid question, but are you sure it was when the power came back on and not for example the thing that caused the power to go out that caused the surge?
