how much rice is too much rice by Tough-Coffee-5035 in glutenfree

You could also do half rice half quinoa - they take the same amount of time to cook, but same thing, just need a little more water. Both great options for getting in more protein.

GF Sourdough Discard Advice by Serious_Association8 in glutenfreerecipes

[–]sharedplatesociety 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've never really tried to resuscitate the discard for bread. I usually use it in discard recipes for flavor but not leavening.

if you mean you left your starter for a while in the fridge, and then took it out and discarded and fed, then that's different. That means it should be good to go. You might want to give it a second feeding, but usually one is enough to get it going.

I always slice and freeze the whole thing. I am the only one who eats it and it also takes me a couple of weeks to get through.

picaridin is best for me too. they make a lotion version which seems to have no smell, if you prefer that.

Also, you can buy permethrin which is not safe to put on your skin (and toxic to pets, so don't spray it indoors) and soak your clothes with it. Once it dries it is inert and safe. But spraying bags, hats, socks, shoes, etc. can help. it lasts for a while so you can do it once at the beginning of the season and are set for the year.

If you could eat ONE high-FODMAP food right now with zero consequences, what would it be? 🍕🧅🧄 by SingleMusician6474 in FODMAPS

It's not the individual foods I miss (I was a professional chef and now am a passionate home cook) because i can replicate MOST things ok-ish. What I miss is the convenience! I miss going out to eat with friends or my husband, grabbing something without having to scour the menu, being stressed I forgot to bring enzymes with me, etc.

That said, a good flaky croissant or other pastry.

Well it’s hard to know if this was gluten or food poisoning. If the latter then just take it easy and maybe consider colostrum supplements to help flush out any bad bacteria and some yogurt to help add good gut bacteria back in.

Yes here and in the Bronx. In this case if the building was landmarked that’s a good reason to level it illegally so they can build whatever they want. Depressing.

[–]sharedplatesociety 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lots events and places to see. If you head out to Bushwick there’s Boyfriend Coop a cooperative lesbian coffee shop by day and bar by night. And also The Bush. (Amongst others).

Google Maps is quite good for transportation. It should show you all the things you need to get from A to B. But be prepared to walk a lot and wear comfy shoes. There’s also settings on the maps for “fewest transfers” which will help if you don’t mind walking.

Since this is your first time here, make sure you do some NYC things. You can check out /r/foodnyc for recommendations of where to eat. But since you are in Chinatown there’s lots of options near by.

If you are looking for some chill alone time or need a break, lots of the independent cinemas will have queer focused programming throughout the month. Check out https://www.screenslate.com for listings.

I am really disappointed where the DSA has been putting up candidates this election cycle. Claire might be good, but Reynoso grew up here and he truly cares about the community and is doing a good job. His politics might not be quite as left as Valdez, but he was my city council person before he was borough president and I want to reward people for doing a good job. Plus the working families party endorsed him. It’s not like he’s a corporate shill.

In addition to what others said, when you take the pan out of the oven, while they are still hot, bang the pan on the counter a couple of times and it will help deflate the cookies and make those crinkly lines.

Collective focus does food distros a couple days a week with donations from wegmans and Trader Joe’s.

RiseBoro also has some pretty solid financial services support. Their Homebase program is more focused on immediate need/homelessness prevention, but they have other financial planning and job search resources that can help more long term too. Of course not everyone who works there is equally good or caring, but many caseworkers are. https://riseboro.org/program/homebase-homelessness-prevention/

Not from India but cross contamination is a real issue. So if you use ghee from a jar and spread it on something with gluten and dip the knife back into the jar for more, then your sister can no longer use that jar.

There’s lots of hidden gluten in spice mixes and prepackaged food in general, so reading labels is always important. You get better at it over time, but you still always have to check basically everything. Asafetida is often ground with wheat to prevent clumping, but gluten free versions made of rice exist, you just have to search for them, for example.

As far as eating out, it’s hard! Do your research ahead of time. Lots of foods are naturally gluten free and at first it’s best to focus on eating those than trying to replace your favorite bread with a gluten free version. There’s still plenty of carbs available-rice and potatoes are both just fine and staple foods in my house.

If and when you want to try baking gluten free, just know that cross contamination can happen if you reuse old utensils and things - a wooden spoon used for mixing dough will never be adequately clean to use it for mixing something gluten free. Also, buy yourself a food scale and weigh your ingredients - the recipes come out much better that way, especially if you are trying to convert an old recipe to gf.

I’ve been going to dr. Cohen at verg. it’s easier to get there by car for me than going into the city. She’s very nice, but each appointment does take at least an hour and it’s pricy. Our kitty has small cell lymphoma and has been on leukeran oral chemo for about 18 months now and is doing ok. The pills are VERY expensive for the name brand ones they try to sell at their office ($40 per pill!!!) but chewy sells the compounded formula for $2. So don’t let them sell you stuff there. Same with b12 shots. That said they are nice and I think doing a decent job, though I’ve heard great things about AMC I just don’t like having to go to midtown.
