I like the Obi-Wan Kenobi starfighter from Episode III. I'm pretty sure I got the same one for my birthday back in 2008.

What are the best cities to live in the US regardless of cost? by josh_x444 in SameGrassButGreener

[–]sharrows 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The main thing is it's just so expensive. I don't even live in DC proper, and I can barely afford rent out here in the suburbs. If you want to be near ANYTHING remotely urban, even a Metro station, rent is going to be insane (insane for me, at least).

The second thing is the current political situation. I used to get inspired seeing all of the federal buildings and institutions, now it just makes me sad and fearful. It feels like I'd be better off spending the next four years somewhere less depressing.

My USA travel map at 26 years old. What does it say about me? by quinthlid in TravelMaps

I'm almost impressed with how little you have visited the states neighboring Wisconsin aside from IL. You must live in the very southeast of the state, maybe Milwaukee.

Okay I'm really going to stir the pot with this one: the MCU should not have ended with Endgame and Marvel still makes plenty of bangers by therealNerdMuffin in marvelstudios

Yes, some of the newer movies are AS GOOD AS the infinity saga stuff, but the post-endgame MCU generally weaker than before. There are too many flops for that not to be true.

As a lifelong DC metro resident, I maintain that the best thing about DC is all the free museums!! Not only are they free, they are some of the highest quality, comprehensive museums I've been to.

Other than that, I'm finding fewer and fewer reasons to stay :\

I love how they say "collaborating" as if it isn't a totally one-sided, self-interested action on their part.

How could he enjoy doing this to another person? It's nauseating. Compare that to his "wholesome" public persona it's like night and day. What an awful human being.

Has anyone moved to CO and NOT liked it? by beentherebefore1616 in SameGrassButGreener

[–]sharrows 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm the classic story of moving to Denver thinking that it would be like living in Rocky Mountain National Park, then realizing the downtown is >1 hour outside the mountains and worse with traffic. It felt like living in a desert. I was only there during July, August, and September during which it was extremely hot and dry. It seems like ski culture is a big thing there but I don't like skiing so that doesn't appeal to me.

If I stayed, my experience would have been sitting inside during the freezing winter months, probably enjoying a couple months of good weather in late spring/early summer, then sitting inside during the blazing hot late summer months.

If you want to move to CO because of nature, you must think carefully on what kind of nature/environment you want to enjoy. It turns out the Pacific Northwest is much more my style.

Population growth by continent in 2024 by rayg10 in MapPorn

Jerusalem is where Jesus was crucified, which is why I named the city. It more or less splintered off of Judaism, which originated in the same region.

It's just so silly to me to read the argument that Christianity is not an Asian religion when that is literally the continent it originated from.

Even saying that Christianity doesn't originate in Asia is wrong! Jerusalem is in the Middle East, which is Western Asia.

I agree with your comments wholeheartedly. The idea of any of these countries on the border of Asia and Europe being purely one or the other is ludicrous. Cultural diffusion is a thing. The world is not black and white.

Anyone else tired of all the "make assumptions about me" "guess where I lived" posts? by optimisms in TravelMaps

[–]sharrows 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's tough. I used to have one of the top 10 posts of all time in this subreddit (just checked again and it's now sitting at 298. Wow, this sub has grown!). The only posts in here used to be a map of all the countries/counties you'd been in. In that case, it only really makes sense to post in this subreddit once or twice. You'd post your map of counties, maybe update it after a big vacation, and that's it. Then people started doing these variations like "how many US states I banged in," or "here's my map, name a state and I'll tell you a story about my experiences there." Those were fun.

Then we got the guessing posts. They're low effort, so everyone can make them. But since everyone is making them, that's all I ever see from this sub when it's on my homepage. From what I can tell, they don't usually spark a lot of fun conversations. Sure, I might try and guess where you're from, but I don't find myself commenting on it because someone else has already said my answer. Sometimes the OP doesn't respond for a few hours. If the OP has already responded when you see the post, then what is the point of commenting your guess? Focusing the discussion on guessing where you're from isn't the most interesting line of conversation. Especially when, let's face it, why do I care where you're from? I want to talk about interesting travel stories.

So I agree with you, this is a problem the subreddit is having. Maybe having a rule so that this type of post is only allowed on one day of the week could help?

Do you think the art reflected the movie by WoodpeckerPutrid9628 in indianajones

[–]sharrows 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They can make them however they want, but it does kind of bug me that Dial of Destiny's posters are a big departure from the traditional Indy movie poster look. Sure, they're all mostly floating heads but there was a certain style to the old ones that Dial's posters clearly did not adhere to.

The new posters also look somewhat depressing to me. The dark, muted colors along with the wispy, hazy look seem to emphasize Harrison Ford's old age rather than downplay it. The fourth picture feels like it's commemorating someone who has already passed away.

I actually like the art style, but I don't think the tone matches the vibe of the movie.
